Why do we call them macronutrients?


Carbohydrates

● Give us fuel and energy

● 3 kinds: sugar, fibre,


starch

Examples: pasta, bananas,


bread, rice, potatoes
Fats
● Give us 2x the amount of
energy as carbs

● Helps our brain function

● Gives padding for our


organs

● Helps fight illness and


disease

Examples: avocados, fish,


olive oil, nuts
Fats

● Different kinds of fats:

- Unsaturated fat

- Saturated fat

- Trans fat

- Essential fats (omega 3)


Proteins

● Keep us full

● Help build, maintain and


repair tissues (skin,
muscles, organs, hair)

Examples: fish, cheese, nuts,


chicken, beef, pork, eggs

Examples: Vitamin C

● Help our bodies grow


and function (grow hair,

Example: calcium (found in

● Water makes up 60% of out body and


essential to living

● Transports nutrients, removes waste,


hydration

● Boys need 10 cups a day and females


need 9 cups a day

● Calories are a measure of energy

● We need a certain amount everyday to


stay alive

● Different foods = different amount of


calories
