PROCEDURE
Introduction (_2_min.):
Attention Grabber:

Intro to Handball - 5 minutes

- Today we will be beginning our handball unit
- Who has played handball?
- Who can give a little explanation of what it is like?
o Brief history of the game:
■ Game was created in 1906 by Holgen Nielson, a Danish teacher.
■ Played very commonly in Europe, played professionally in leagues (like
NHL, NBA, etc…)
■ One of the fastest played games in the world.
■ First played at the Olympic level in 1936 (Berlin).
○ Common rules (we will elaborate on the rules next class):
Starting the game:
- The objective of the game is to throw the ball into the opposing teams net
- To start the game, rock paper scissors for the ball, start on the midline and throw it to a
teammate
-
■ 7 players on the court per team (3 forwards, 3 defense, 1 goalie).
■ Players start on their own half of the court.
■ Team winning the toss/after a goal is scored start with a pass from the
centre line called a ‘throw off’.
■ After a throw off players are allowed anywhere on the court except the goal
area
Moving the ball:
■ Players are allowed 3 steps before the ball must be dribbled, passed or shot.
■ If dribbled, 3 more steps are allowed but the ball must then be passed or
thrown at the goalie.
■ A player holding the ball (not dribbling) has 3 seconds to release the ball or
else the other team gains possession

Goal Area
■ Only the goalies are allowed in the goal area.
■ They may leave the goal area, but not with possession of the ball.
■ If a shot misses the net and hits the wall behind the goal, the goalie gets
possession of the ball.
Throw-ins
■ Awarded when the ball crosses the side line (the thick black line).
■ The non offending team throws the ball back into play.
■ The player taking the throw in must have one foot on the side line.
Other rules
- No contact on defense
- No charging
Body (30 mins.):
Dribble Relay - 10 minutes:
o Split class into 4-5 equal teams (count 1-6), have first 6 people go and grab a
volleyball from the storage room
- Have another student set up the cones on the other side of the gym
o Teams will relay race from one side of the gym to the other
- One round right hand, dribble around the cone and back, focus on control of
the ball, next round left hand
o Once you return to your team, have a seat, first team with all members sitting
wins.
Keep Away - 15 minutes
- The reason we are playing this is to practise passing without rules as we would in a real
handball game
o Join relay teams to make two large teams and give out pinnies
o The object is to keep the ball as long as possible by passing it to teammates.
o Can only hold the ball for three seconds.
o Team that has ball at the end of three minutes is the winner, play best of 5

Mini Team Handball: (if time)

o Play using the set of three rules (3 steps, 3 seconds, minimum 3 passes – one
to female).
o Not allowed in the goal crease – free throw line/3 point line.
o Ball must “skip” in, cannot be directly thrown in.

Make substitutions every 3 minutes.

Closure ( 2 min.):
