ABSTRACT

Social media usage had increased over time. Therefore, this study discovered the effects of

social media on the study habits of the STEM students of UE Caloocan Campus.

Particularly, this study answered the following research questions including, what social

media platform/s do students frequently use for their study habits? How do social media

influences STEM students’ study habits? and how aware do the STEM students of UE

Caloocan about the impacts of social media on their study habits? The method used in the

study is a qualitative method and the approach used for this study is the phenomenology

approach. The researchers conducted an interview and survey from five grade 11 STEM

students and five from grade 12 STEM students.

As a result of the research, the researchers found out students usually used Messenger,

YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google, Gmail, and Google Scholar. The

preponderance of the student uses Messenger and Youtube and they consumed four to six

hours using social media. Social media frequently serves as a distraction and to the students

that leads them to procrastinate. However, upon addressing the impacts of social media,

they can still comply with their school task.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the

background of the study, the statement of the problem, the significance of the study, and

the scope and delimitation of the study.

Background of the Study

Over the past years, an alarming percentage of people who used social media

intensifies. A survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project in

late 2012, they stated that more likely to use social media are the young adult. In 2005,

only 12% of them used social media and it increases up to 90% today. The popularity of

social media became wider over the years. Social media is used to communicate, interact,

connect, learn, and build knowledge. This is a great platform for the people, especially for

the students. In advanced Internet technologies, anything can get easier. People can shop,

pay bills, find a job, find schools, and search online. People can also use social media to

share content and ideas.

The way one study is what we call their study habits. It has a big role in student’s

life. It affects the level of their academic achievement and it is a process where they gain

more knowledge. Lack of effective study habits can result in the most challenging way to

a student’s success (Mark and Howard, 2009). Attitudes towards study habits have a great

contribution to one’s academic performance. Students that procrastinate and unprepared

1
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

are more likely to become anxious on exams day while the one who prepared, and studies

well are confident and relaxed while taking the test (Marc, 2011).

The researchers wanted to know the effects of social media in the study habits of

students, particularly in STEM students. As stated by the Pew Research Center survey,

51% of 13-17 years old used Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and YouTube. Teenagers use

social media sites daily that may affect their study habits. Social media has pros and cons

and too much using it can lead to addiction. The researchers conducted a survey and

interview with 5 grade 11 STEM students and 5 grade 12 STEM students at the University

of the East (Caloocan). At the end of this research, students will have the knowledge to

improve and change their attitude towards the usage of social media.

Statement of the Problem

The intent of this phenomenological study explores the effects of social media on

the study habits of the STEM students of UE Caloocan Campus. Specifically, this study

shall seek an answer to the following research questions:

1. What social media platforms do students frequently use?

2. How do social media influences STEM students’ study habits?

a. In what way do social media aids the STEM students’ study habits?

b. In what way social media serves as a distraction?

3. How aware do the STEM students of UE Caloocan about the impacts of social media

on their study habits?

2

Significance of the Study

The intent of this study is to contribute and provide additional support in the field

of education, providing more information about the various effects of social media on the

STEM students. Specifically, this research will be significant to teachers, students, as well

as our government in the education field.

For the students, this study will be a way to raise awareness of too much addiction

to use social media that can affect their study habits especially the STEM students.

For the teachers, this study will serve as a bridge to help them realize how social

media influences their students as well as discovering different implications that

have been brought among the students. This study will also apprise the teachers and

create awareness among the students about the usage of social media for

educational purposes.

The government will play a significant role here as this study will help them to

spread awareness about the positive and negative impacts as well as the wrong ideas

and beliefs on what social media is all about. They can also implement such policies

so that social media can be used wisely by the students and through that, they can

improve themselves in gathering and understanding the knowledge that they have

acquired.

For future researchers, this study will be beneficial for them as this study may

serve as a guide and the ideas and results presented in this study may use as a

3

College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

reference in conducting research related to the topic being studied. This will also

give them brief background knowledge, or an overview of the problem presented

in the study.

Scope and Limitation

This study focused on what way does social media helpful in STEM students or in

what way it will serve as a distraction to them. Social media was made to interact with

friends and family but was later adopted in other fields, it also helps the students with there

assignments and projects, it helps in finding places or information. It can be harmful to

those who are using it too much, they may experience stress which can give negative impact

to their health, and lack of sleep, social media can be an advantage and can be a

disadvantage many ways. The study consists of STEM students because they have a lot of

things should do that deals with the use of technologies and the use of social media as well.

Researchers wanted to know the experience of STEM students with regard to using

social media. By conducting a survey and a face-to-face interview, will be able to describe

the situation and list down the possible effects of it. The sample of this study consisted of

5 from grade 11 stem students and 5 grade 12 stem students who agreed to participate in

the study. The researchers will also focus on various social media platforms such as

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, as well as Google, and others.

However, there are limitations to this study. The researcher will not focus on the

academic performance of the students as it will change into another topic. Also, the

researchers will find it difficult to interview STEM students due to their schedules and

school works resulting a lack of time in interviewing. The researchers do not also cover the

students in other strands such as ABM, GAS, HUMSS, ICT, and other strands since it only

focuses on the strand of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Chapter 2
FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY

This chapter is intended to provide information to this research and sources that

were gathered by the researchers. This chapter includes the process of reviewing existing

literature and studies that are relevant to the study. Also, this chapter includes the

conceptual framework and hypotheses that will serve as a guide in this study being

conducted.

Social Media

The result of the study Kirschner and Karpinski (2010) stated that the kind of

distraction is the concern about the negative effects of social media for the students because

the teachers cannot determine who is really paying attention. Another thing is, social media

makes people addicted. People spend their time on social media which divide their

attention and concentration (as cited by Abdulahi, Samadi, & Gharleghi, 2014).

Kalpidou, Costin & Morris (2011) claimed that a relationship escalates between the

use of social media and the grades that the students acquire. They spend less time studying

and consequently, having lower grades than those students who pay less time using social

media. It affected their study time, as well as wrong spellings, and the use of wrong

grammar (as cited by Obadara & Olaopa, 2018). Furthermore, Kord (2008) asserted that

students nowadays divert their attention from their studies. Contemporary studies have

6
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

been made by researchers and confirms that 80% to 90% of the students in a University

have been actively partaking in the use of social media providing evidence that leads to an

investigation in a specific area of influence which is study habits (as cited by Chris, 2015).

Social media is a part of humanity's culture (Boyd & Ellison, 2007; Hakoyama &

Hakoyama, 2011). Different studies were conducted and discovered that social media may

lead the various negative effects including anxiety, mental health problems, loss of

productivity, stress, and others. Wang et al. (2011) presented that youngsters spent less

time on preparing for their studies and take up too much time on social media like social

networking sites (SNS) affecting their study and grades negatively (Duncan, Hoekstra, &

Wilcox, 2012; Kalpidou, Costin, & Morris, 2011; Ophir, Nass, & Wagner, 2009; Wang et

al., 2011; as cited by Gok, 2016).

Study Habits

Performance is relevant in our society as it holds significance in various fields. In

education, performance is apparent and is what brings forth academic achievement and as

a result of good habits of studying. Having good study habits is beneficial and constructive

also in career and workplace actualization (Siahi & Maiyo, 2015; as cited by). According

to John (2010), bad study habits negatively affect students’ academic performance as it is

unhealthy and unproductive. Thus, not addressing the said situation can hinder progress

and development (as cited by Ebele & Olofu, 2017).

Social Media

Social media gets most of the student’s attention and concentration. It diverts them

to non-educational, iniquitous, improper actions such as useless chatting, time killing and

not doing their jobs. Since social media introduced captivating task like gaming,

advertisements etc. most people focus more on this thing. Social media addicts become a

useless lump for parents, friends and other people. They cannot be successful because they

do not possess the sense of upcoming future and tournament in their career (Tariq,

Mehboob, Asfandyar, & Ullah, 2012).

Social media has lots of impacts on the teenager's life on both ends. It can be

positive and in favor of youth's social life, but it can be negative as well to the users. It

seems like a cool tool for changing and improving people. It affects children and teens who

are growing up that media is used for interactivity, multitasking, and organization who find

their own communication patterns and tools being changed (Anthony, 2009; as cited by

Ghulam et al., 2014).

Study Habits

According to Ayodele & Adebiyi (2013), Study habits is defined as a way of

studying the students whether systematic, efficient or inefficient. Efficient study habits lead

to the success of the academic performance, While the inefficient leads to failure.

Socioeconomic status plays a big part to help the students to enhance their study habits at

all levels of education (as cited by Khan, 2016).

8
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

A study made by Rabia, Tallat, Mubarak, and Nasir (2017) on the study habits of

students and concluded that weak study habits deeply affect the students’ academic

performance, it is also important that they need to have study habits so that they can

succeed in life. And after all, it doesn’t have an effect on what you are, what your cultural

race is, or what gender you are, if you need to study hard, and you have good study habits

you’ll gain high expectancy in the near future.

Related Local Literature

Social Media

Social media may affect the study habits, academic life and learning experience of

students in the wrong way. It grabs most of their attention and distracts them by using non-

educational and inappropriate action that may lead to addiction. (Kuppuswamy and

Shankar, 2010; as cited by Beronio et al., 2017). It is important to check the usage of social

media in the increasing number of users in the youth because there is the unknown effect

of it on different aspects of human life (Sheldon, 2008; as cited by Alejandrino et al., n.d.).

According to Karpinski (2009), social media, predominantly Social Networking

Sites (SNS), showed to be true that it serves as a distraction in humanity's current

generation due to the fact that most of the users -- mainly students, divert their time more

on the usage of social media rather than devoting their time studying. Consequently, having

a poor study habit and it leads to having a bad performance (as cited by Beronio et al.,

2017).

Related Local Studies

Study Habits

News on Manila Bulletin (2011) stressed that in order for a person to have good

study habits, he/she should be effective and efficient. Effective in terms of understanding

can seize information about the subject matter and such. Efficient in terms of maximizing

the time of study in order to spend as small as possible. This led to achieving one's goal

and dream. Study Habits and academic achievement is associated with each other. Being a

book lover and being a take-down-notes person has a significant similarity in academic

achievement. Nuthana and Yenagi (2009) tell that students who are having this kind of

situation prepare more of having Academic Achievement. Fazal (2012) also proposes that

being study related person has a high chance of having academic achievement, this kind of

behavior deals in having a more specific time in learning, writing, and reading. So, it

concludes that if you have high skill in the study then you have also a high chance of having

an academic achievement (as cited by Mendezabal, 2013).

Synthesis

The relevantly related literature that has been forgathered by the researchers

examine that there are different effects of social media to the study habits of students

positively and negatively including preparing for assignments and examination, finding

new knowledge and information, to stress, anxiety, loss of production and sense of time,

and others. On the other hand, most of the related studies gathered on the utilization of

10
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

social media by the students are quantitative study and measures their level of utilization

and how it is related their study habits and performance. Conversely, it lacks qualitative

studies that explore their perception as well as their experiences, and knowledge on the

students use of social media to effectively asses the effects of it on their study habits.

Conceptual Framework

STEM Students utilization

Figure 2.1: Conceptual Framework on the utilization of social media and how it
affects the study habits of STEM students
The figure above shows the utilization of social media by the STEM students of

University of the East (UE) Caloocan Campus and its effect on their study habits. It is

further subdivided into two categories the first one is the forms and classifications of social

media. For instance, A news article of Irish time in 2012, observed that the application

Facebook can affect the student’s study habit. The phone can easily access this application

only using WiFi. In fact, instead of the textbooks, the students hold their phone/iPad so

they can access their Facebook account. It simply means that social networking sites

especially the facebook can affect the study habits of the students (as cited by Maitem et

al., 2017). YouTube project design and development increased students’ attitude toward

learning. The judgments of participants declare high awareness of how students described

11

their involvement with the project, their learning style and the benefits of tutorial learning

(Fralinger & Owens, 2009).

The second one is the levels of the utilization of social media and this will be based

on the frequency or how long they use social media in a day. According to Karadkar (2015),

If the student uses social media in a wrong and inaccurate way, study habits will also be

affected in a negative way. On the contrary, if the students’ use social media in a proper

and positive way, study habits will also result in a positive way.

Hypotheses

The following hypotheses were guided by the research question and generated by the

research in this study.

1. There are no variations social media platforms that the STEM student of

University of Caloocan (UE) Caloocan Campus use.

2. Social media has an impact on the study habits of STEM students in an

uncooperative and pessimistic way.

3. The STEM students of the University of the East Caloocan are not aware of

the impacts that have been brought by the social media to their study habits

RESEARCH DESIGN

This chapter entails the overall plan of the study. This chapter includes the research

design, the data and its sources, the research instruments, the procedure, the data gathering

procedure, and the plan for data analysis.

Research Method

To explore the world of social media and to address the research questions, the

researchers conducted a study about the effect of social media for STEM students using a

Qualitative research design. According to the book Practical Research 1: Basics of

Qualitative Research, it is a form of social inquiry, it focuses on the people’s perception

about an event, a thing or in the environment and it is all about their experience. The

phenomenology approach was also applied in this research as the researchers wanted to

know the perspective and experiences of individual students in terms of social media. This

research will be helpful to the students especially if those students consumed a lot of time

using social media.

Researchers did the preliminary questions to the STEM students in the University

of the East to choose the respondents. Two sampling methods were used in selecting the

participants. For grade 11 STEM students, the researchers used convenience sampling.

While in grade 12 STEM students, quota sampling method was used. Researchers compiled

14
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

a list of students for participation. Only a few of the students are selected to generalize the

whole of STEM students. The selected students partaked and answered the interview

questions and survey questions that the researchers made. Their answers are then

generalized to discover the effect of social media in the study habits of students.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at the University of the East - Caloocan Campus. It is

located at 105 Samson Road, Caloocan City, Philippines. The respondents are interviewed

and surveyed in an enclosed and private area to ensure that the respondents are focused on

answering the interview and survey questions.

Nature of the Subject and Respondents

Social media has been used by various groups of people in the community.

Specifically, the usage among senior high school students is explicitly high. Students from

senior high school utilize social media for many purposes. it is believed that basic

information like gender, age, and how often do the students use social media in a day.

According to the book Practical Research 1: Basics of Qualitative Research, the

respondents from a phenomenological approach is no more than 10 participants. So, the

researchers chose 10 respondents: five (5) from Grade 11 and five (5) from grade 12 that

will represent the population. Though there are maximum numbers of respondents, the

researchers also looked for additional respondents in case the data were not saturated.

Sampling method

Researchers selected the STEM students who will participate in the study and to

answer the questions that the researchers made. Non-probability sampling was used by the

researcher. There are two sampling methods were used in selecting the students who will

participate. Convenience sampling was used for grade 11 STEM students and quota

sampling for grade 12 STEM students. According to the book of Practical Research 1:

Basics of Qualitative Research, convenience sampling is made of people who has

accessibility to the researchers, and they are easy to reach and in quota sampling, the

selection of participant is non-random so not everyone had the chance to participate the

study. The goal was to know the impact of social media in the study habits of individual

students.

As stated above, there were four (4) male and six (6) females who participated in

the study, and there are five (5) students who are 16-17 years old while there are five (5)

students who are 18 years old. There are also two (2) students who use social media for

1-3 hours, four (4) students who use social media for 4-6 hours, three (3) students who

utilized social media for 7-9 hours, and there is only one (1) student who uses social media

for more than 9 hours.

Data and Their Sources

In order to gather the data needed, the researchers used both primary and secondary

sources.

Primary Sources

The researchers made use of both the questionnaire and interview. The

questionnaire was a list of open-ended questions with choices to choose from and space

was provided for any other possible answers not specified on the given choices. There was

17
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

also space provided for specific questions seeking to know the effects of social media on

one’s study habits. The interview was conducted face-to-face with the respondent allowing

in-depth questioning and follow up questions.

Secondary Sources

The researchers used the related literature and related studies as background

information to determine information relevant to the study. Observations and discoveries

were comprised of different related studies and literature to come up with valid and reliable

data.

Research Instruments

The data was collected based on two kinds of data collection method: questionnaire

and interview, for a better understanding of data gathered answering the research questions.

The interview and questionnaire were conducted with the students of UE chosen according

to the criterion. The research instrument was then validated and evaluated. The following

criterion served as a guide for the acceptability and reliability of the research instrument.

Survey Questionnaires

The first instrument used in gathering the data was by conducting a survey and

distributing questionnaires. The researchers made use of this instrument as there are

questions made that was needed not to be explained further yet can satisfy the data needed.

The researchers developed the instrument by searching for related questionnaires online

for some questions and add a minor revision yet the majority of it is formulated only by

the researchers.

The researchers utilized their statement of the problem as the basis in formulating

questions that can gather rich data and satisfy the researchers’ needs. They interpreted the

data gathered by scrutinizing for commonalities and categorized them according to the

themes that have emerged.

Procedure

The data gathered were obtained initially through communication with the grade

11 and 12 students from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

strand in University of the East Caloocan. The researchers used quota and convenience

sampling. Quota sampling was executed when the researchers are the one who chooses the

respondents due to lack of time. Also, convenience sampling was implemented by reaching

out to the respondents who are in their free time when the interview and survey were

conducted. At this time, the students answered preliminary questions and were filtered out

. The survey questions and interview questions were conducted in person to gain further

and in-depth information about the effects of social media in their study habits. In order to

inform the respondents about the purpose of the study, the topic of the research was

presented to them.

The data collection took place in a private place on the campus of the university

during school hours, which was the most accessible for the respondents. Prior to

commencing the survey and interview, an introductory consent form was acknowledged.

In the beginning, the interviewees were asked to answer demographic profile

including the age, sex, and their preferred alyas. Once the demographic profile is

completed, the interview began about their awareness on the impacts of social media on

their study habits. It was tape-recorded and was transcribed to further analyze the

Ethical Consideration

Beforehand, the respondents were asked to partake in the study by giving consent

letters that serve as proof they are willing to participate in the study. Confidentiality and

anonymity were eminent in this study, the answered survey questionnaires were kept in a

locked cabinet in the researcher’s home and each interview was recorded using a mobile

phone and named according to the number given to the respondents. To protect the human

subjects in this study, the tape recording was terminated and deleted after the recording

was analyzed and interpreted, to ensure that no information was leaked.

Data Analysis

The interviews were recorded using a mobile phone, with the consent of the

respondents and After the data from the questionnaires and interview had been gathered

and the recordings were transcribed, it was examined by the researchers through reading

every transcription as well as the data from the survey individually and compared to find

correlations among the interviews and survey. In addition, the researchers applied open,

axial and selective coding as methods for analysis that designs labels and categories within

the data. These methods were used to distinguish, conceptualize, and place the information

into categories.

Chapter 4
ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter contains the presentation, analysis, and interpretation of data acquired

from the responses of the respondents. The discussion follows the order presented in the

statement of the problem.

To ensure the validity and the reliability of the findings, the researchers used the

external validation of coding strategies which is a process of comparing how the

researchers have categorized the results with how another researcher from another group

would have done it. It was ensured that the other group validated it honestly, accurately,

and precisely.

What social media platforms do students frequently use?

According to the data gathered in the survey questionnaire, the majority of the

respondents answered that they spend approximately 4-6 hours using social media per day.

Followed by 7-9 hours and there are also students who stated that they only use social

media for 1-3 hours. The minority answered that they use social media for more than 9

hours.

The usual social media platforms that STEM students use are Messenger, YouTube,

Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google, Gmail, and Google Scholar. Not one respondent

answered that they use the platform Wikipedia. The majority uses Messenger and YouTube

25

garnering the highest tally from the respondents followed by Twitter and Instagram. Next,

is Facebook then immediately followed by Google and then Gmail. Lastly, the minority

belonged to the platform Google scholar.

How do social media influences STEM students’ study habits?

a. In what way do social media aids the STEM students’ study habits?

The researchers categorized the survey answers of the participants. According to

the result of this study, the students saw the beneficial side of employing social media in

terms of the updates online, gathering information, finding different references and execute

tasks faster. First is to be updated in a certain event inside and outside of our country that

may contribute to their learnings. They can also be updated in terms of schoolwork or group

activities.

One of the platforms that students use is the Messenger application, which enables

them to equate and communicate with their respective group mates to make collaborative

work and to be updated in their group project. Social media also aid the students to gather

information or find references that can support them with their studies. Distinguished by

Boyd & Ellison, 2007: Hakoyama & Hakoyama (2011), social media is the part of

mankind's society, it is used for a lot of purposes such as socialization, entertainment, and

even in the study.

When a student was given a certain homework or task, they go through different

sources or platforms on the internet to fulfill their task. To be specific, students used various

search engines such as Google, Google Scholar, and others to look up certain information.

26
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

Since there are various websites on the internet, there are many options that students may

use to find what they are looking for. It is also asserted from the survey that it is faster, and

it could save tons of time. Instead of going to the library, it is much easier to search online

for the students. Also, students can manage their time on when to study and when to browse

social media to check updates.

Other than that, students tend to be more focus when utilizing social media in their

study habits. According to the survey, students are likely to be focused on when using

social media in doing homework or when studying. But there are also some students who

stated that they get distracted when using social media.

b. In what way social media serves as a distraction?

Social media has a benefit, but it also has its consequences if people cannot control

themselves. It becomes part of this generation’s lives.

Students use social media because they want, and they need to. They tend to use it

while studying, but sometimes, while studying there are some students who immediately

check their notifications while studying to learn. Instead of just studying, they are also

using social networking sites that can cause them to lessen their focus because of studying

and using social media at the same time. According to Wang et al. (2011) students who

spend more time on social media and take less time on studying are more likely to have

low grades. It can also affect their use of grammar and spelling. (As cited by Kalpidou,

Costin & Morris, 2011; as cited by Gok, 2016).

27
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

People nowadays are so engaged in social media that their time, attention, and

concentration are diverted away from studying (Abdulahi, Samadi & Gharkegi, 2014).

Majority of users are students and they spend more time on social media instead of studying

which makes it true that social media, predominantly Social Networking Sites (SNS),

serves as a distraction, according to Karpinski (2009). In accordance, bad performance in

academics is a consequence of having poor study habits (as cited by Abdulahi, Samadi, &

Gharleghi, 2014).

There is also a situation that the students doing a task and then suddenly opening

unrelated tabs that can cause them to be distracted to the task that they needed to do.

According to Tariq, Mehboob, Asfandyar, & Ulah, (2012), the attention and concentration

of the students are mostly on social media. It influenced them to non-educational works,

and improper actions including chatting nonsense to other people, consume most of the

time using it and also becoming lazy to do a job.

How aware do the STEM students of UE Caloocan about the impacts of

social media on their study habits?

According to the data gathered by the researchers from the conducted interview,

three themes emerged from it:

Time management and Procrastination

In accordance with the interview conducted by the researchers, the majority of the

participants stated that they procrastinate due to the following reasons:

28
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

Students procrastinate sometimes or most of the times due to the fact that they get

easily distracted by social media. Identically, the majority of the respondent's stated they

tend to scroll up newsfeeds and watch shows to spend their time with. They check their

social media account updates before doing homework or activities. Being lazy contributes

to procrastination. They tend to procrastinate because they have more time before the due

date of a certain school task and divert their attention to social media. But on the contrary,

procrastination builds up the pressure. Students tend to cram due to pressure. Nonetheless,

they could comply with activities or homework within the due date.

“…since I am um, I have this motto that um um diamonds are formed under

pressure, so um with the use of procrastination I tend to do my work better

because I tend to get pressured so with this I, I'm able to produce um a more

good task.”

However, a minority of the participants stated that they do not procrastinate, and

they do their respective activities or homework before the due date. Students tend to do

their homework as early as possible before checking any social media accounts like

Facebook, Twitter, and such.

“So, honestly, social media did not manipulate me. I have my own limits, I

have my controls in terms of using social media, I know when to use and what

is the best time to use it. So, if I know I need to study, if I need to sleep, I know

for myself that I should stop using social media.”

29
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

Habits and behavior in studying or doing school task with and without social media

Through time most students are using social media and as time passes the users of

social media are increasing especially the student ages 16-19 years old. Because of the

increasing users of it, there are researchers who conducted a study about the behaviors of

the students when studying while using social media. Based on the study, the student’s

behaviors and habits are affected by social media. In terms of the habits and behaviors of

students with the use of social media, there are some who tends to procrastinate most of

the time. And because of too much use of it, the students are distracted. In terms of the

efficiency and quality of the school task, there are students who say that social media make

things more efficient and informative.

However, there are some students who say not. In terms of the student’s

productivity, there are some students who are lazy because they used social media too much

even while studying. It serves as a distraction in some students but for some students who

can control and manage their time of using social media, it helps them to do the task

properly.

“I think sometimes, it causes distraction, but sometimes, it helps

because it is where we get informations especially if we were going to ask our

classmates and teachers, so I think it is balanced.”

In addition, the focus of the students is divided while studying. Student’s asserted

that they have less focus on the reason for using social media while studying. Some claimed

30
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

that having a goal that you need to finish a certain task leads to have more focus and to be

more concentrated.
“So, with that, my habits and behaviors is I tend to be more focused

and concentrated, if I have to do it, if I have a goal to finish,I need to finish it

within the day”

Lastly, social media can also affect the time and sleeping schedule of students. Most

of the participants say that they sleep late at night just because of too much using social

media.Majority of the students are using social media in a negative way. Because of it the

students tend to do the task before the due date or procrastinating. The researchers conclude

that majority of the students are having a lack of time to sleep, distracted and less

productive with the use of social media. However, there are students who prefer using

books as a reference instead of social media.

“…uhhhh I used to refer to books, and to my own notes or lectures

then uhhh I tend to concentrate more and focus on what I need to finish on

within the day.”

They are more likely to be productive and have a better focus on their school works

since there are no disturbances coming from various platforms of the internet. They can

concentrate adequately and have a longer time to finish their task since they don’t

procrastinate, or they do their respective responsibility ahead of time. Also, the

information that can be gathered from the books are more substantial, some student said

that their understanding is much better with the use of books. Since their time are not

affected with regards to using social media, they have longer sleeping time and a better

31
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

sleeping schedule. In contrast, using books as a reference take too much of their time to

gather information and make their school work harder since their reference are hard to find.

Ways in addressing the impacts brought by social media

In accordance with how the participants answered question number 2, they are

aware of the impacts brought by social media and are able to address and know how to

address the problems associated with its use. They are also able to give proper

methods/strategies on how to combat the negativities of social media and its effects after

the problem was resolved.

To sum up all the answers from the participants, refraining from using social media

can be a great start on addressing the problem. If possible, uninstall applications, turn off

notifications to avoid unnecessary distractions instead, do the task right away. Doing a task

as early as possible has many associated benefits: more efficient and high-quality school

tasks, can boost productivity, increased focus leading to task being properly done and

learning a lot and much better, can also have more free time and sleeping schedule is better,

sleeping time is longer, and lastly, leads to better academic performance.

of the study.

Summary of Findings

In this chapter, the information of each individual STEM students who participated

in the study are given including the demographic information, individual survey, and

interviews that were conducted to answer the following research problem

The participant gives a concise understanding of the personal experiences of their

individual life. In this chapter, the convenience and quota sampling was used to choose the

ten individual STEM students who participated the study and the information about them

are given including the demographic information, Individual survey, and interviews that

were conducted. As stated in the research method, qualitative research with

phenomenology approach is applied to gather the data and to answer the research problem.

The participant gives a concise understanding of the personal experiences of their

individual life.

The findings of the study are based on an analysis of survey and interview

transcripts, the hypothesis and findings were discussed in four parts that correspond with

the themes from the data.

33
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

1. According to the data gathered in the survey questionnaire, the majority of the

students spend approximately 4-6 hours using social media and the minority are

using social media for more than 9 hours.

2. In the collection of the data gathered by the researchers, the students usually used

Messenger, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google, Gmail, and Google

Scholar. And the majority of the platform that the students are using is the

Messenger and YouTube.

3. As stated in the second research problem, social media exerted influence on the

study habits of STEM students. In this problem, there were two factors that affect

the STEM student’s study habits which can aid them and can be a distraction for

them. According to the data gathered, the students are distracted and tend to

procrastinate because of too much using it. There are also students says that social

media can help them and can support them in their studies. The students can do the

task that was given to them faster with the help of social media.

4. In the collected data, students in the University of the East in Caloocan, the STEM

students are aware of the impacts of social media on their study habits that can

affect them like the Messenger, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google,

Gmail, and Google Scholar. There are students that are not aware of it that leads

them to scroll in their newsfeed, watch some videos to entertain them that they do

not do their task and activities.

Conclusions

In the findings mentioned in the summary, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. STEM students utilized several social media platforms such as Messenger,

YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google, Gmail, and Google Scholar.

These platforms can aid the students in their studies when used wisely, but most of

the time serves as a distraction, as it is home to entertain. Moreover, STEM students

are conscious of the influence social media has upon them and can properly assess

and address its corresponding problem.

2. In accordance with the findings that social media mostly serves as a distraction, it

led to procrastination, as stated by the majority of the participants. STEM students

mostly procrastinate due to the presence of social media, however, upon addressing

the problem, they also are able to comply with the school tasks given to them.

Recommendations

The following recommendations were made based on the results of the study:

For the beneficiaries:

1. This study found that using social media excessively leads to procrastination, which

influences their study habits. Thus, the schools should have a seminar on how to

properly manage their time and inform all the students on what the consequences

of are using social media.

35
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

2. Since there are various platforms of social media that STEM students at the

University of the East Caloocan Campus use. Therefore, teachers should take this

as an opportunity to make this as a tool to empower and influence the study habits

of the students. For example, giving an online reviewer, which is more creative,

and engaging for the students.

3. Few students use their phone inside their class, which distracts them. They should

be monitored by the professors and have a policy of no phone inside the class when

not in use.

4. For the students to reduce their time using social media, they can have an alternative

way of entertaining themselves like reading books, playing sports etc.

5. Social networking sites should establish more academic related sites that can

support the students to enhance their skills in studying and make their task more

accessible.

6. Parents should be responsible to monitor the students on the usage of social media

to decrease their time surfing on the internet.

For future researchers:

1. Firstly, due to a shortage of time, the researchers could not increase sample size

from more than 10. By increasing sample size, results may vary. More respondents

yield more in-depth knowledge and concise information.

2. To further generalize the findings of this study, future research should be enforced

on other students at different grade levels and also from different strands.

36
University of the East
Caloocan Campus
College of Arts and Sciences – Basic Education Department

3. At some point, people tend to think that social media only influences negatively the

youths. Adolescents are also vulnerable to the same and a study should be

conducted on the effects of social media on another aspect such as academic

performance, time management in other grade levels or the impact of social media

on moral behaviors of the adults in a particular grade level.

4. Further research should be executed to explore the factors on why social media

makes a strong impact of a certain target population with a goal of accommodating

various solution for the negative effects.

5. Future researchers should also look at up-to-date related literature and related

studies to further verify the findings.

various impacts of social media that brings to the study habits of the STEM students. Thank you for your willingness to
participate in the interview and study. Reassured that all information are confidential and anonymous. So, let’s start. When
do you usually do your assignments?
P: Um, before the deadline.
I: In your own observation, what are the habits or behaviors when you are studying or doing school task with social media?
P: Um, come again?
I: What are the habits or behaviors when you are studying with social media?
P: Ah. I think the behavior of as, um as regard to myself um I usually get distracted because of social (Stuttered) media. Due to
this, um I’m not doing my um my task um properly right on time.
I: What about without social media?
P: Um without social medias, I have tried this because I have uninstalled these apps. Um I was able to do productively the task
that I have, that I need to do.
I: As you have said, what are the effects on, what are the effects in your efficiency and quality of your school task?
P: Um, the effects of this social media to my um efficiency in doing my school task, I think um this really lessen the productivity
because I tend to um procrastinate or um to before doing the (Stuttered) needed task.
I: May I ask, how often do you procrastinate?
P: Um all the time. (Short laugh).
I: What about its effect on your productivity?
P: Um, since I am um, I have this motto that um um diamonds are formed under pressure, so um with the use of procrastination
I tend to do my work better because I tend to get pressured so with this I, im able to produce um a more good task.
I: What are its effects on your focus and learning?
P: Um, but not all the time there procrastination also um causes me to be stress because specially if the due date is will be
tomorrow so I defect of this procrastination I tend to become stress and worried (Stuttered) about whether I will, whether if
I can finish my task.
I: What about your time and sleeping schedule?
P: Um, um my sleeping schedule to this habit um I tend to sleep um later than 12 am or even past midnight.
I: As you have said some negative impacts, have you ever addressed it?

P: Um um, sometimes because I ain’t try to not procrastinate in order so, in order for me to get sleep earlier than I am getting
right now.
I: What are some ways methods or strategies that you have used in terms of addressing the impacts of social media?
P: Um, the one of the ways that I do is that (Stuttered) I installed these apps in my cellphone so that I will be able to focus on
doing my task and secondly, um I tend to um divert myself from using my cellphone and I just do my um task right away
after um (Stuttered) after being at home after school.
I: After addressing some problems, how did it affect your efficiency and quality of your school tasks?
P: Um upon addressing these problems in my study habits, I tend to do my task um productively in which I can able to (Stuttered)
I’m able to think properly regarding the um needed task so I’m producing a more (Stuttered) a better task.
I: What about your productivity?
P: Um, apart since I am addressing the procrastination my productivity is um um is getting higher because since (Stuttered) the
time that I that I have to do the task are much longer than I have when I am procrastinating.

am doing it um um with the way that um the task recurring me for to do.
I: Last and but not the least, how about your time and sleeping schedule?
P: Um since I, I somehow addressed this um (Stuttered) my problem about procrastination, the time (Stuttered) the sleeping

I: So good afternoon, we the grade 11 STEM students from the University of the East Caloocan are researching on the "Effect
of Social Media in the Study habits of STEM students in U.E Caloocan campus." That aims to investigate the impacts that
social media brings to the study habits of STEM students in U.E (Stuttered) Caloocan campus. Thank you for your willingness
to participate in the interview and survey and all the information are reassured to be confidential. So, let's start. When do you
usually do your assignments?
P: I usually do my assignments (Stuttered) since I'm an afternoon shift, I do it after our shift so it's night time.
I: Are you also one of the people having a mantra of due date is the do date?
P: For me sometimes I do that but um often ah um iniisip ko muna yung deadline since malayo pa, gagawin ko na agad.
I: If so, what are the reasons you procrastinate?
So halimbawa na dun is
yung um syempre yung mga mayroon tayong individual and group activities so pwedeng makaapekto kung yung participation
ng bawat members.
I: How often do you procrastinate?
P: Ako sakin, to be honest (Stuttered) sometimes lang.
I: In your own observation, what are the habits or behaviors (Stuttered) you have when you're studying or doing school task?
yung pag gamit nun.
I: Yung without social media naman?
P: Sa without social media naman meron naman kasi tayong mga activities sa school na hindi kinakailangan ng internet such
as binibigyan tayo ng kunware sa pages sa books so mas prefer ko yung without social media kasi hindi mo na kailangan
mag gugol pa ng oras sa internet.
I: So, what are its effect on the effeciency and quality of your school task?
P: Kasi pag ikaw meron kang gumagamit ka ng social media, pwedeng ma divide yung focus mo into two different aspects.
I: In terms of your productivity?
I: What are its effects on your focus and learning?
I: What are its effect on your time and sleeping schedule?
P: Ayon dahil nga dalawa yung ginagawa mo so mas nadadagdagan yung oras na na-cconsume mo, so basically mas bumababa
yung time management mo.
I: Have you ever addressed the impacts brought by social media?
I: What are the methods or strategies you use?
P: Saan anong use? Saan?
I: After addressing the problem how did it affect the efficiency and quality of your school task?
I: How about in terms of your focus and learning?
P: Sa focus and learning ko naman, mas focus ako. (Stuttered) Natuto ako nang maayos. Diba?
I: How about in your productivity?
I: And how about in terms of your time and sleeping schedule?

I: That would be all, thank you.

I: If so, what are the reasons you procrastinate?
importanteng gawin.
I: How often do you procrastinate?
P: (Laughing) Alwayss hhihihi
P: Oo
I: Nagpoprocrastinate?
P: Madalas
I: In your own observations, what are the habits or behaviors you have whe-... you have when studying or doing school task

P: …With social media parang mas napapadali kasi yuuung sa through internet parang mas madali mong nakukuha yung mga

I: Opo
P: Pag ka sa without. Medyo mahirap kase sometimes yung mga libro na kailangan mo… wala namaan… sayo diba?
I: Ahhhh…. What are its effects on the efficiency and quality of your school task?
I: Ahhhh... ahmmmm. For you do social media serves more as a distraction or it will help you to study better?
P: Tingin ko… to study better kasi it depends naman yun sa estudyante kung paano nya ihahandle yung mga ganung situation
eh.
I: And... what are its effects on your productivity? As a student... or as a person...
P: As a person nalang.
I: And... ahh. What are its effect on your fo--... focus and learning. Especially on your lear--… learning
P: Learning?
Ganon.
I: And what are its effects on your time and sleeping schedule.
P: Soo--... (laughing).

I: Have you ever address the impact brought by social media? Or have you ever thought of a solution to address the impact o-

P: Ahmmmm...
I: So... ahh ... in handling ahhh. of using social media what are the methods and strategies you use?
P: Ahmmm.
social media o kung maari dapat I turn off mo muna yung phone mo para diba ma--.
I: And after addressing the problem how did it affect the efficiency and quality of your school task?
I: And in your productivity?
P: …. Medyo nagiging ano nga lang... medyo nagiging…. tamad kase mas nag fofocus sa social media minsan.
I: How about your learning?
P: Nakakatulong sya pag dating sa learning kase… yung mga kailangan mo, through internet nalalaman mo agad.
I: And after you address the problem how abo--... how is your time and sleeping schedule?
I: That will be all po thank you.
P: Thank you

I: When do you usually do your assignments?
P: Ahh… after class hours
I: Are you also one of the people having a mantra of “Due date is the do date”?
P: Ahm… I tend to procrastinate
I: If so, what are the reasons you procrastinate?
P: Ahh. I really get distracted and do... do much important things that. the usually the homework
I: So how often do you procrastinate?
P: Everyday yes
I: In your own observations what are the habit and behaviors you have when studying or during school task with social media?

facebook then tweet’s and youtube’s
I: How about on your observation what are the habits and behaviors you have when studying or doing school task without
social media?
P: Ahh... I get more productive do much things and… ahh do it exact on time

P: Ahh... social media may or may not have bad effect, but it also become ahh platform wherein you can study much faster and
learn to new knowledge and as you said it’s fast cause it’s only by take over so ahh ano some there are some parts and
disadvantage of using social media sa study factor
I: How about the effects on your productivity?
P: Ahm... ano it depends kasi sa people it depends how they use some they get more faster na mag productive some they tend

I: But if you are going to think a method or strategies what are you going to use prevent or to address the problem?
P: If?
I: In social media
P: If I where to think ahh treatment I think I would limit the data I’m using and ahh probably ahh power down the wifi before I
go to sleep though I don’t get the temptation of powering off my phone and scrolling the newsfeed in social media
I: So, imagine if you already address the problem how will it affect the efficiency and quality of your school task?

done because your so tired and you will be less attentive and ano less focus
I: So, in terms in learning how did it affect?
P: Ahm… in terms of learning it should really affect because you yourself will not understand the lecture result of the tired
minds and less sleep
I: So, after addressing the problem how did it affect your time and sleeping schedule

distracted?
P: Distracted (laugh). Madalas distracted.
I: (long pause) Can you elaborate?
gano’n.
I: And in your own observation also, what are the habits or behavior you have studying or doing school tasks without social

I: Are you more focused when, without social media?

I: (long pause) What are its effects on the efficiency and quality of your school tasks?
P: (long pause) Again?

I: And in terms of your productivity, are you more productive with social media?
P: Hindi.
I: How about in your focus and learning?
P: ‘Pag naman sa focus, minsan kasi ‘yung social media kunyari like youtubes gano’n diba meron do’ng mga, mga istudy…
‘yon mas do’n ako nag-aaral kesa sa nakikinig sa teachers.
I: So, you prefer doing your homeworks or school tasks with social media?
P: (nod)
I: How about your time and sleeping schedule?
P: So far, maaga, maaga naman akong natutulog.
I: With social media or without?
P: Without.
I: (long pause) How about with social media?

P: Yes.
I: (long pause) What are the methods or strategies you used?
P: Sa?
I: (long pause) When… when addressing the problems or the impacts brought by social media?
phone ta’s itabi na lang o ‘di kaya i-off ‘yung notifications gano’n.
I: After addressing the problem, how did affect, how did it affect the efficiency and quality of your school tasks?
P: Mas ano, mas parang mas madali sayong matapos ‘yung school tasks kasi nga di ka na gumagamit ng phones tapos (long
pause)
I: How about the quality of your school tasks?
ginagawa mo.
I: And how about in your productivity?
P: (long pause) Productivity? Mas masipag.
I: And in terms of your focus and learning, how did… social media affect, or without social media?
I: And after addressing the problem, how did it affect your focus and learning?
I: After addressing the problem, how did it affect your time and sleeping schedule?

I: So good afternoon po. We are grade 11 stem students from the University of the East-Caloocan and we are researching on
the effect of social media on the study habits of stem students in UE Caloocan Campus, that aims to investigate the impact
that social media brings to the study habits of stem students in UE Caloocan Campus. Thank you for your willingness to
participate in the interview and survey. So, for the first question po, when do you usually do your assignments?
P: Um, I, english?
I: Anything po.
P: Um, I usually do them when um I have free time but I, I um, inuuna ko ‘yung mga facebook gano’n gano’n, I admit. Tapos
parang ginagawa ko siya last minute and even on the day na dapat siyang ipasa.
I: So, you are also one of, one of the people having… (cough) wait (cough) having a mantra of “due date is the do-date”?
P: Yeah, yeah mhm.
I: So, if so, what are the reasons you procrastinate?
P: Um, I think it’s because I’m the kind of student na… uh I’ll do better kapag cramming ‘yung ano ‘yung nagka-cram sa time
so parang mas focus ako, dun ako mas nakakapag-focus.
I: So, how often do you procrastinate?
P: Always.
I: So, in your own observations, what are the habits or behaviors you have when studying or doing school tasks with the aid of
social media? Or with… uh like facebook but it can also be like Google?
P: Kung pa’no niya naapektuhan ‘yung study habits ko?
I: Hindi, ‘yung… the habits and behaviors while uh while studying uh with social media.
P: Um I think… uh sometimes it causes distraction, pero sometimes, it helps kasi ano do’n tayo kumukuha ng information lalo
I: Um, your study habits and behaviors without social media like um no phones, no gadgets, just uh your book s, notes, that.
P: Um, on, on better days, ‘yung mga (stutter) ‘di ako tinatamad na days, ano I think maganda siya kasi nakakapagfocus talaga
‘ko and (stutter) naisasaulo ko talaga, pero kapag halimbawa lazy days ta’s ano mahahawakan ko ‘yung phone ko pero
kailangan kong gumawa ng something, syempre parang mas, mas mae-entince akong mag, mag ano magcellphone.
I: So, um regarding these observations about your habits and behaviors what do you think are its effects on the efficiency and
quality of your school tasks?
P: Um I think it depends on the student.
END OF TAPE 1 (2 TAPES TOTAL)

START OF TAPE 2 (2 TAPES TOTAL)

I: So, um, picking up, so what are its effects on your productivity?
P: Um, the effects are ano… negative syempre kasi it, it reduces efficiency [inaudible segment].
I: So, uh, next is um your, effects on your focus and learning.
I: Learning.
P: Learning… ayon nakaka-distract, so due to the distraction, parang syempre ‘yung learning mo mababawasan dahil sa iba ka
naka-focus.
I: So, ‘yung last for the effects is, how about its uh effects on your time and sleeping schedule.
P: Uh, sa time… uh… minsan nakakapagwaste siya ng time lalo na kapag may mga homeworks tayo na gagawin tapos sa
sleeping, napupuyat ako, syempre kasi… due to social media tsaka sa mga iba pang platforms.
I: So, mga like, um ilang hours na lang po ‘yung sa tingin niyo ‘yung tulog niyo… uh if that’s the case?
P: 4, gano’n.
I: So, um uh have you ever addressed the impacts brought by social media?
P: Ah yes, actually ano thesis namin ‘yan last year, gan’yan din.
I: Mm, so what are the methods or strategies that you used?
P: Sa?
I: On addressing the impacts.
P: (long pause) Like? Sample.
I: Like um when you’re studying like you’re, you’re gonna, parang ilalayo mo ‘yung sarili mo sa gadgets like, gano’n.
P: Mm, that’s one… tapos siguro gano’n, gano’n ‘yung ginagawa ko, eh kung talagang desidido ako.
I: So ‘yun po, after addressing the problem, how did it affect the efficiency of, and quality of your school tasks?
P: Syempre mas naging efficient kasi nga ‘yung nalayo tayo sa mga distractions gano’n.

63

I: Your productivity, focus, and learning?

P: Mm nakakapagboost siya ng productivity kasi less distraction… tapos sa focus and learning, syempre mas focused ka, so
since focused ka mas marami kang matututunan, mas maiintindihan mo ‘yung binabasa mo.
I: And lastly, for your time and sleeping schedule, how did affect after the problem is addressed?
P: Sa time, tingin ko maraming akong free time, kung, kung hindi ko gagalawin ‘yung social media ko. Tsaka pagdating sa
sleeping schedule, I’m sure na mas marami akong tulog… ‘yon (small laugh).
I: Thank you po, that’s all.
P: Sige, good luck. Papasa.
I: Thank you!

I: Goodafternoon, we grade 11 stem students from the university of the east caloocan are researching on the effects of social
media in the study habits of stem students in ue caloocan campus, that aims to investigate the impacts of social media brings
to the study habits of stem students in ue caloocan campus. Thank you for your willingness to participate in the interview
and survey. You have read the consent form and you are willing to participate in our study. You also agreed that the
information will be recorded by the researchers. Rest assure...assured that all information are strictly confidential and
anonymous
P: I have agreed with the uhmm... I have read the consent form and i agreed with your conditions.
I: Uhhh, For the first question, when do (laughter) you usually do (laughter) your assignments?
P: So i do my assignments before time. So, it depends uhhh. I used to uhhh do things before time. So uhmm ginagawa ko yung
mga assignments parang siguro 1 day before or basta as much as possible, early ko siyang gagawin.
I: So, you're not one of the people having a mantra of "due date is the do date"?
P: No. I dont do that.
I: So, in your own observations, what are the habits/behaviors you have when you are studying or doing school tasks?
P: So, yung ginagawa ko kapag gumagawa ako ng assignment or school activities, i tend to focus and concentrate dun sa mga
ginagawa ko. Kung gagawa, gagawa lang. Then kung magcecellphone, which is i am used to kapag gumagawa kasi ako
kailangan naka open din yung phone ko kasi in terms of group activities or what uhhh kailangan kasi yung social media
kapag nakikipag connect ako sa iba kong mga classmate or sa professors or teachers ko. So, with that uhhhh yung mga habits
or behaviors ko is yun nga, yung focus ako ang concentrated. Kung gagawin, kung kailangan dapat gawin, kung may goal
ako na matapos for the day, kailangan ko siya tapusin within the day.
I: And what about you study habits and behaviors when you are not using social media or without the aid of them?
I: So, when i tend to study uhhh without social media, i used to uhhh concentrate parin kahit ganun uhhhh i used to refer to
books, and to my own notes or lectures then uhhh i tend to concentrate more and focus on what i need to finish on within the
day.
P: So, what are its effects on the efficiency and quality of your school tasks?
I: So uhh dahil dun sa study habits ko na mas ginagawa ko siya earlier within the due date. So i can manage my own kung may
dapat pa ba akong gawin or irevise. So, by that, i know na confiedent akong ipapasa yung mga requirements or yung uhhh
kailangan kong ipasa kasi alam kong ginawa ko siya before the due date and i know na hindi ko siya minadali and confident
ako sa ginawa ko.
P: What about your productivity, your focus and leaning?
I: So, in terms of productivity, uhh yung effect niya is i see my self productive in a way na uhhh yung goal ko for the day
matapos ko to. So hindi ganon.
I: Then in terms of my focus and learning naman, with that dahil isa isa ko siyang tinatapos, or isa isa ko siyang uhhh ginagawa,
i tend to have more focus in a certain thing, in a certain period. So uhh mas nadedevelop ko yung learning and mas naaacquire
ko yung dapat na matutunan ko.
P: So, the effects on your time and sleeping schedule like do you maximize your time on doing school task and what are its
effects on your sleeping schedule?
I: So, in terms of time and sleeping schedule, so dahil nga sa study habits ko na ginagawa ko siya early than the due date, so
hindi ako masyadong napupuyat, or masyado kong hindi naman...at some point dahil sa sobrang daming gawain, napupuyat
ako, pero uhhh kumbaga, mas naiiwasan ko na sobra yung puyat ko na to the point na 2 -3 hours lang yung tulog ko. So, with
that, i can manang my own uhhh sleeping schedule wherein i used to control also or think of my own health.
P: So yung uhh...have you ever had the impacts on you brought by social media like distraction or anything else?
I: So uhh, Honestly hindi naman ako masyadong kinain ng sistema ng social media. I have my own limits. I have my controls
in terms of using social media, and alam ko kung saan lang ako dapat gumagamit at ano lang yung ginagamit at anong oras

social media brings to the study habits of stem students in ue caloocan campus. Thank you for your willingness to participate
in the interview and survey.
I: So, for the first question po, when do you usually do your assignments?
I: So, you are not one of the people having a mantra of "due date is the do date"?
P: Uhh no.
I: So, in your own observations po, what are habits of behaviors you have when studying or doing school tasks with the aid of
social media? any social media networking sites like google, pero pwede din yung mga twitter, facebook, etc.
P: Uhh siguro ano, yung google.
I: So, what are the habits or behaviors you observed when you're studying without social media? Uhm mainly yung books,
Kasi syempre kailangan mo balikan lahat ng notes mo or yung books mo ganon.
I: So uhm what are its effects on the efficiency and quality of your school tasks? Based on how you answered on the previous
question.
P: Pagka reliable sources, mas madali natin siyang maaano.
tayo kapag stem students.
P: Uh huh
I: How about its effects on your productivity?
yung ginagamit mo.
I: So parang balance po kayo? You are using social media uh as a uh parang aid sayo and not distraction?
P: Uh oo
I: So, what are its effects on your time and sleeping schedule?
I: Yung sa sleeping schedule uh uhm, do you usually uh yung maaga ka matulog, or yung late?
I: Uh so uhm is there, is there any negative impacts that is brought to you by social media?
positive effects
I: That will be all po, thank you for participating.
