“CHEMICAL REACTION”
• Identify the types of Chemical reactions

• Cite the evidence of chemical reactions

• Give the example of each types of

reactions
What is a Chemical Reaction?
It is a chemical change in which one
or more substances are destroyed
and one or more new substances are
created.

Parts are mixed together to make

something new
Parts of a Chemical Reaction
Reactants  Products
Reactants: Substances that are destroyed by the
chemical change (bonds break).

Products: Substances created by the chemical

change (new bonds form).

The arrow () is read as “yields”.

Other symbols in chemical
reactions
• (s) = solid
• (l) = liquid
• (g) = gas
• (aq) = aqueous solution (the substance is
dissolved in H2O)
• “+” separates two or more reactants or products
• “” yield sign separates reactants from products
Evidence for a Chemical Reaction
Evidence for a Chemical Reaction
1) Involvement of light or heat.
Evidence for a Chemical Reaction
2) Temperature change (increase or decrease)
Evidence for a Chemical Reaction
3) Color change (due to the formation of a new
substance).
Evidence for a Chemical Reaction
4) Formation of a gas (bubbling or an odor)
other than boiling.
Evidence for a Chemical Reaction
5) Formation of a precipitate (a new solid
forms) from the reaction of two aqueous
solutions.

of Chemistry
Types of Chemical Reactions

1. Synthesis Reaction
2. Decomposition Reaction
3. Single Replacement Reaction
4. Double Replacement Reaction
5. Combustion Reaction
Types of Chemical Reactions

1. Synthesis – The get together

2. Decomposition- The break up
3. Single Replacement- The Cheater
4. Double Replacement- The Swap
5. Combustion- The Lover
**The Red names are “helpful hints”
Reactants – beginning substance Products- Ending Substance
Coefficient- number placed in front of a chemical formula in an equation.
1. Synthesis Reaction
Example C + O2
C + O O  O C O
Reactants Products

General: A + B  AB
Synthesis Reaction
• Predict the products.
Na + Cl2  NaCl2
Mg + F2  MgF2

Al + F2  AlF3
Synthesis = Join together
Coefficient- number placed in front of a chemical formula in an equation.
2. Decomposition Reaction
Example: NaCl

Cl Na  Cl + Na

General: AB  A + B
Compound = Element + Element
Decomposition Reaction
• Predict the products.

HgO  Hg + O

KClO  KCl + O

Decomposition = Split apart

Reactants – beginning substance Products- Ending Substance
3. Single Displacement Reaction
Example: CuCl2 + Zn

Cl
Cu
Cl + Zn  Cl
Zn
Cl + Cu

General: AB + C  AC + B
Compound + Element = New Compound + New Element
Single Replacement Reactions
• Predict the products.
Example:
Cl2 + NaBr  NaCl + Br2

C + AB AC+ B
HgO + Cl2 
Example:
HgCl + O2
A B + C A C + B
Compound + Element = New Compound + New Element
A X B Y A Y B X
A X B Y A Y B X
4. Double displacement Reaction
Example: MgO + CaS

Mg
+ Ca  Mg
+ Ca
O S S O

General: AB + CD  AD + CB
Double Replacement Reactions
• Predict the products.
CuCl2 + H2S  CuS + HCl

BaCl2 + Na2SO4  BaSO4 + NaCl

5. Combustion Reactions
• Combustion reactions – when a
hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen
gas
• This is also called BURNING!
• In order to burn something you
need the 3 things in the “fire
triangle”:

• 1) Fuel (hydrocarbon)
2) Oxygen
3) Something to ignite the
reaction (spark)
Combustion Reactions
• In general:
CxHy + O2  CO2 + H2O

• Products are ALWAYS

CARBON DIOXIDE AND WATER!
H20 and CO2 will always be a Product
***All Combustion must have
a hydrocarbon and 02 as
reactants

CH4 + 2 O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O

5 Main types of reactions
• Synthesis- “Love at first sight”

• Decomposition- “The break-up”

• Single Replacement- “My best friends girlfriend”

• Double Replacement- “Revenge”

• Combustion- “The player”
