PART II. Fill in each gap in the passage below with one suitable word. (15 pts)
Most people think that the older you(16)..........get........., the(17) ........harder.......... it is to
learn a new language. That is, they believe that children learn(18).......more....... easily
and efficiently than adults. Thus, at some point in our lives, may be around age 12 or 13,
we lose the (19).......ability........ to learn language well. Is this idea fact or myth?
Is it true that children learn a foreign language more efficiently than adults? On
the(20).......contrary.........., research studies suggest that the opposite may be true. One
report, on 2,000 Danish children studying Swedish(21).....concluded...........that the
teenagers learned more, in less time, than the younger children. Another report, on
Americans learning Russian, showed a direct improvement of(22).......ability...........over
the(23).....age.........range tested, that is, the ability to learn increased as the
age(24)......increased........., from childhood to adulthood.
There are several possible (25).....explanations........ for
these(26)......findings........ . For one thing, adults know more about the world and
therefore are able to understand meanings more easily than children. Moreover, adult can
use(27)......logical........ thinking to help themselves see pattern in the language. Finally,
adults have more self-discipline than children.
All in all, it seems that the(28).....common.........idea that children are better
language(29)......learner..............than adults may not be facts, (30).....a........myth.

For more than six million American children, coming home after school means
coming back to an empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV. Some
may hide. But all of them have something in common. They spend part of each day
alone. They are called “latchkey children”. They are children who look after themselves
while their parents work. And their bad condition has become a subject of concern.
Lynette Long was once the principal of an elementary school. She said, “We had a
school rule against wearing jewelry. A lot of kids had chains around their necks with key
attached. I was constantly telling them to put the keys inside shirts. There were so many
keys; it never came to my mind what they meant.” Slowly, she learned that they were
house keys.
She and her husband began talking to the children who had keys. They learned of the
effect working couples and single parents were having on their children. Fear was the
biggest problem faced by children at home alone. One in three latchkey children the
Longs talked to reported being frightened. Many had nightmares and were worried about
their own safety.
The most common way latchkey children deal with their fears is by hiding. They may
hide in a shower stall, under a bed or in a closet. The second is TV. They often turn the
volume up. It’s hard to get statistics on latchkey children, the Longs have learned. Most
parents are slow to admit that they leave their children alone.

1. You bought a radio from a local shop. It didn’t work properly. Write a
letter to the shop to complain.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Three weeks ago I bought a brand new Samsung radio from your store on Giai
Phong Street. I'm happy to have it but very disappointed to see it didn't work 2
weeks ago. Due to a business trip, I can't bring the device to the repair shop
right now, so I sent an email asking if I can bring the device to your shop next
week to fix it. Until now I still have not received news from your store. I hope
you will repair or replace it.

Regarding the specifics of the order, I purchased this Samsung FM Radio 1405
from one of your Samsung brand on March 7. Order number is 14052109 and I
have attached Attach a copy of your receipt.

The problem with the radio is that I cannot turn on the radio despite trying
many methods and checking the battery. I'm sure this is a manufacturing flaw.
Here is a solution and since I really like the look and feel of this radio it makes
sense to me, I hope that you will agree to fix the problem or give me a new
one. If not, I would like a full refund and I will contact the Consumer Rights
Office if I do not receive your response on this matter within a week.

Thank you for your interest in this matter and look forward to hearing from
you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Le Thi Nhu Quynh
