14 Hymns for Advent and Christmas Hymns for Advent and Christmas 3
58: Hear the Herald Voice... 2. Songs of praise awoke the morn
1. Hear the herald voice resounding: When the Prince of peace was born;
“Christ is near,” it seems to say, Songs of praise arose when he
Cast away the dreams of darkness, Captive led captivity.
Welcome Christ, the light of day!”
3. Heav'n and earth must pass away;
2. Wakened by this solemn warning, Songs of praise shall crown that day:
Let the earthbound soul arise; God will make new heav'ns and earth;
Christ her sun, all sloth dispelling, Songs of praise shall hail their birth.
Shines upon the morning skies.
4. And will voice of man be dumb
3. See the Lamb so long expected, Till the glorious kingdom come?
Comes with pardon down from heav’n; No, the church delights to raise
Hasten now, with tears of sorrow, Psalms and hymns and songs of praise.
One and all to be forgiv’n. 5. Saints below, with heart and voice,
4. So when next he comes with glory, Still in songs of praise rejoice;
Shrouding all the earth in fear, Learning here, by faith and love,
May he then as our defender Songs of praise to sing above.
On the clouds of heav’n appear.
6. Borne upon their inal breath,
5. Honor, glory, virtue, merit, Songs of praise shall conquer death;
To the Father and the Son, Then, amidst eternal joy,
With the co-eternal Spirit, Songs of praise their powers employ.
While eternal ages run.
