LESSON OVERVIEW
Now that we’ve covered basic information about chemical
elements (protons, neutrons, electrons, mass, state, etc.), it’s time
to explore the method scientists use to organize these elements.
Over the next few days, we’ll be working with the exercises in this
hyperbook. The goal is for you to learn more about the periodic table, including
information on the history of the periodic table, why it’s arranged like it is, and how to
read the information on the chart.

Instructions
In each of the following sections of this hyperbook, you will be given links to various
websites about the periodic table. Please visit each of the websites, and then answer the
corresponding questions.

You should re-save this document as (your last name)_hyperbook. Then

type your answers directly on the document and submit them by the due
date below.

STUDENTS WILL HAVE THREE DAYS TO COMPLETE THE INDIVIDUAL PORTION OF

THIS BOOK AND ONE ADDITIONAL WEEK TO COMPLETE THE BONUS ACTIVITIES.

Learning Objectives
-After completing an interactive tutorial, you’ll be able to describe
the basic history of the periodic table.

-Once you’ve learned a bit about the history and formation of the
periodic table, you’ll be able to locate elements and their specific qualities
on the periodic table.

Looking to the Future

It’s important to remember the chemical symbols for common
elements because we will be working extensively with the
periodic table for much of the year, and for many more years to come! In order to do
that, you’ll need to begin to memorize the symbols for the first 30 elements, and then
common elements after that.

I’m going to hold you responsible for this knowledge over the course of the next few
weeks (more information will follow). As a fun way to start the process, here are some
great periodic table games that will challenge you to remember elements, their symbols,
and their location on the periodic table. Also, if you’re struggling with the concepts we’ve
covered in this hyperbook, these activities will help you as well!

BONUS ACTIVITY!
Create an original song to help you memorize the first 30 elements of the
periodic table. You may use the same beats and pitches of common songs
you know, or you can create a whole new song! Make a music video to
accompany the song (you may record the audio and add text, or create a
video of yourself performing the song) in order to get +5 bonus points. This
bonus activity is due one week from the date you receive your hyperbook.

Student Evaluation/Feedback

What was your favorite activity or section of this hyperbook?

If you could replace your least favorite section with a new one, what would you replace it with?

Did you find this method of learning helpful? Why or why not?
