2.1 Use
...contains as intended
information on its intended use, the structure of the
equipment and the technical data.

The determination of viscosity of mineral oils, hydrocarbons and other

transparent or opaque liquids, which behave as Newtonian liquids, is a test
method that is used very often in the mineral oil industry. The product
specifications define the relevant permissible viscosity range. In the
permissible limit regions it is therefore particularly important to obtain
extremely accurate measurement results with high repeatability and
reproducibility. A requirement for this is the use of a precision viscosity
analyzer, a viscosity bath with extremely high temperature stability and
exact time measurement.
Capillary viscosity analyzers in the Series HVM472 fulfill these
requirements in all points. They determine the kinematic viscosity according
to the accuracy requirements of ASTM D445. The devices are specially
designed for the measurement of mineral oil products, resins and waxes. The
cleaning system and the optional preheating of the sample are specially
intended for difficult samples that are very viscous or even solid.
Corrosive products containing acids or alkalis should not be measured.
Determination of the To determine the viscosity, the time is measured which the sample takes to
kinematic viscosity pass through a capillary tube. This flow time is multiplied by the capillary
constant.

Calibration and The kinematic viscosity is a material constant that can be traced back to the
traceability basic units of the metric system. The viscosity of water can then be
determined very accurately under standard conditions. Using water, the
national metrological organizations calibrate reference viscosity analyzers
with which certificated reference materials are measured. Finally, using
these "calibrated oils", the capillary constant for the capillary viscometer is
determined which is intended for routine use. In addition to the capillary
viscometer, the temperature-stabilizing bath must also be calibrated with its
temperature measurement system and the time measurement device.
The flow times must not be too short, because otherwise errors can be
expected. Long flow times produce very accurate results, but are
uneconomical for commercial applications. Very long flow times produce
very accurate results, but are impractical due to productivity concerns.
Automated The automated method has a number of advantages: The sample to be
determination of the measured is introduced into the device via sample beaker. After entering the
kinematic viscosity sample number (and perhaps a short description), the measurement is started.
From now on the HVM472 manages the sample. It is introduced into the

Version 4.1F Description of the Equipment 9

Operation Instruction Viscosity Analyzer HVM 472

capillary tube. Then the run-out time is measured and the sample is ejected
onto a tray. Finally, the capillary tube is carefully cleaned and dried. All
calculations are carried out automatically, so that the measured viscosity is
displayed, printed out and stored.
The two "multi-range" capillary tubes in the HVM472 have a 100-fold
range. If the two measurement ranges overlap, then the complete viscosity
spectrum is covered at a fixed temperature with an approximately 5000-fold
overall measurement range without changing capillary tubes. Since each of
the two capillary tubes on the HVM472 has its own independent bath, there
is also the possibility of measuring the viscosity index of a sample spectrum
in the 100-fold measurement range at two different temperatures.
The complete calibration of the device is made very simple and dependable
due to the easy-to-use features of the Herzog HLIS software.

2.3 Technical Data

Standards ASTM D 445, IP 71 Section 1, ISO 3104
Configuration Stand alone system incorporating two viscosity analyzer baths. Each
bath has one multi-range capillary tube and an auto sampler with 26
sample beaker capacity.
Sample Capability The system can handle nearly all samples of the petroleum, bitumen
and wax industry. Either clear or opaque. With optional sample
preheating and slop tube heating it is also possible to measure
samples which have a critical Pour Point (see section sample
preheating).
Viscosity Range Standard 0.5 – 5000 mm2/s at 40°C (68°F); 0.5 – 2000 mm2/s at 100°C (212°F)
Viscosity Range Fast Run 0,5 – 600 mm2/s at 40/100°C (68/212°F);
Sample Volume 18 ml
Low volume 4 ml
Sample Preheating If the sample viscosity is to high at ambient temperature it is
necessary to preheat it. With the preheat option is it possible to
measure most samples which have Pour Points below 60 °C at 100
°C bath temperature. Under certain conditions the unit can even
handle samples with Pour Points of up to 75°C (at 100°C Bath).
Critical samples must be checked explicitly, because this property is
very much depending on the sample properties and the measurement
conditions,
Optional preheating stations with programmable temperature settings
from 40 – 110 °C (68 – 230°F).
Without HLIS PC program, all samples are preheated to the selected
temperature and duration. With HLIS each sample can be individually
programmed to be preheated or not over a certain time.
Bath temperature range User programmable from 20 – 150°C (68 – 302 F),
External cooling through built in cooling coil required for operation at
20 – 40 °C (68 – 104°F). Using the optional Cooling Control System
will automatically reduce or shut off cooling when a higher bath
temperature is chosen or when the instrument is shut off. Coolant
temperature shall be 10°C lower than desired bath temperature.
Bath Temperature Temperature point 40°C and 100°C are factory pre calibrated
Bath Temperature Stability Proportional heating control and high velocity bath media circulation.
Internal resolution 0.001°C. Stability in accordance to the standards or
better.
Bath Media Silicone oil, 2 x 5 liters.
Bath Cabinet/Chassis All steel, baked epoxy resin coated: electromagnetic isolation, solvent
resistant. All glass baths with transparent plastic heat-touch
protection.
Capillaries 2 multi-range capillary tubes. The nominal range of such capillaries is
100 fold using typical flow times from 60 to 400 seconds.
2 Fast run multi-range capillary tubes. The nominal range of such
capillaries is 20 fold using typical flow times from 20 to 100 seconds
Capillary mix, one multi-range capillary tube and one fast run multi-
range capillary tubes possible
Meniscus Timing and Thermal (NTC): for nearly all types of clear to dark samples. Also
Repeatability suitable for high level carbon or stabile emulsion (dark) samples.
Repeatability is better or equal to ASTM D445. Herzog NTC sensors
are automatically calibrated and do not require an individual training.

Connections

3.6.1 Slop connection

Cut the supplied 12 mm Teflon hose as long as
to connect both outlets with the slop container.
Connect the Teflon hose to the 2 copper pipes at
the lower rear of the instrument and to the inlet
bores of the slop container. Secure the hose with the
supplied clamps. Use right angle tubes to avoid
snapped off slop tubes.

Figure 29: Slop hoses in place

Make sure that the slop tubes go straight down into
 the slop container and no sinks can plug with high
pour point sample.
A special slop sensor (see chapter 3.6.3 on page 33)
prevents for overfilling of the slop container

3.6.4 Solvent connection

Cut the supplied 5 mm Teflon hose as
long as to connect the solvent inlets with you
solvent container.
Connect the Teflon hose to the 2 small brass
nozzles at the upper rear of the instrument
and to solvent filter and from there to the inlet
bores of the solvent container.
Figure 33: Solvent hoses in place
It is necessary to use a solvent filter (45 µm)
to prevent the valves and bores to be blocked
with dirt.
The filter must be inserted in away that the
rotary part below shows toward the solvent
container. Thus it can easier opened and
cleaned.
The valve system uses Kalrez seals that
Figure 34: Solvent filter
withstand aggressive solvents like Acetone or
Toluene.
Solvent 1 must be strong enough to dissolve sample material and clean
the capillary tube.
Solvent 2 cleans the capillary tube after solvent 1 has been flushed out.
Solvent 2 should contain properties that will evaporate completely during
air-drying.

The IBP for cleaning solvent must be higher than the HVM 472 bath
 temperature. The cleaning system incorporates brass parts and is not
designed to handle corrosive samples or solvents that destroy brass.

 Never use chloroform for cleaning purposes

Typical solvents are:

Name Boiling point Up to bath temp..
Hexan 68°C  60°C
Heptan 98°C ≤ 90°C
Aceton 55°C ≤ 50°C
Isooctan 99°C ≤ 100°C
Toluen 110°C ≤ 100°C
Xylen 136°C - 144°C ≤ 135°C
Siedeschnitt 60°C - 140°C ≤. Abhängig vom
Benzin (cut) Lösungsm.
Ethanol 78°C  70°C
Butanol 118°C  100°C

Attention Acetone:

The use of Acetone can create difficulties. Often Acetone is used as

34 Setup and installation Version 4.1F

Operation Instruction Viscosity Analyzer HVM 472

solvent 2, because is a very good drying liquid for the bath

temperatures 20 ….50°C. Make sure Acetone is 100% water free.
Water containing Acetone will create measuring problems. Sample
flow-out times shorter as normal, means sample viscosity lower as
expected. Deviation can be 0,4 to 0.7% to standard viscosity.
If necessary remove water by use of Calciumchlorid  94%

The required quantity of solvent is depending to the viscosity of the sample.

 With increasing viscosity it is necessary to have more cleaning cycles.
It is only solvent with a boiling point above the bath temperature allowed.

Incorrect solvent can occur to substantial problems.

 • By extensive over pressure can solvent vapor comes to the valves
and pumps.
• Sample – solvent mixture can be splashed into the unit and cause
mechanical problems.
• No sufficient cleaning of the capillary
• Solvent vapor in the lab

3.6.5 Coolant connection

In case you wish to operate the bath below
+40°C down to +20°C it has to be cooled.
Connect either a fresh water source or a
chiller to the bath(s) required.
Follow the label on the rear for inlet and
outlet nozzle. Make sure that the outlet cannot
build up pressure higher than 0.5 bar in the
loop. The coolant temperature should be Figure 35: Bath coolant hoses in place
about 10°C lower than the desired bath
temperature.

If the optional Cooling Control System is not used, it is necessary to shut off
 cooling when a higher bath temperature is chosen or when the instrument is
shut off.

3.6.6 Vapor Exhaust Connection

Always make sure that the solvent vapor exhaust is connected to a fan that
 produces enough under-pressure to evacuate the HVM472 cabinet vapors
out of the lab.

Connect a 32 mm tube

between the HVM472 and the external
exhaust fan connector. The fan shall be
capable to produce an ~ 5 m3/h airflow from
the instrument to the exhaust outlet.

3.9 Calibration and Parameter settings

At least it is necessary to set the constants of the capillaries in the calibration

menu and to set the parameters for the measurement. The temperature bathes
are factory calibrated at 40 °C (104 F) and 100 °C (212 F). If other bath
temperatures are needed, it is necessary to calibrate the bath at these
temperatures (see chapter 11.1.1 on page 104).

3.9.1 Setting of the capillary constants

1. Go to the Calibration menu and press under Left
post the Capill soft key.

Figure 40: Calibration: Left post capillary

Use the certificate, which have the same Type / Serial Nr: as the
capillary. The Type / Serial Nr of the capillary is printed on the biggest
bulb of the capillary.
Maybe it is necessary to correct the constants with the acceleration of
gravity.
Key in the constants from the certificate.
2. In lower line Viscosity range you may type in the entire range of the
capillary (2 - 200 mm2/s), which then will show up in the Start sample
window where information about the measurement range of your
capillaries is useful.
3. Do step 1 and 2 also for the right capillary.

3.9.2 Parameter settings

It is recommended to check all parameters. This means the general
parameters and the parameters for the left and the right post. The parameters
are described in the Chapter 6 on page 57.

Chapter 5 Viscosity determination

This chapter... ...is aimed at operating personnel

...contains information how to start viscosity determination.

5.1 Sample Preparation

Fill the beaker The preparation of the sample has a significant influence on the
measurement result and must therefore be carried out very carefully.
The preparation of the sample must be carried out according to DIN 51562
or ASTM 445.

Do not fill the beaker completely, because otherwise the liquid will overflow
when the suction tube is dipped into it.
Take also care for the thermal expansion, if the sample will be preheated
Plastic beakers max 110 °C, 230°F) in the unit. The best way is to fill the
sample at preheating temperature into the sample beaker.

Standard beaker Standard beaker must be used with the Standard Multi Range capillary. The
and sample beakers are filled with 18 ml of the sample liquid
standard capillary The glass beaker is filled up to the filling mark and the plastic beakers about
5 mm below the neck.

Fast Run capillary Standard beaker, filled with 18ml Sample should be used. See fill instruction
for standard beakers

Version 4.1F Viscosity determination 49

If not enough sample is available, with using the Fast Run capillary it is
possible to reduce the sample volume in the standard beaker. As fill gauge
should be used the optional tray (270-384).

The upper edge of the tray is used as fill mark.

Low volume Beaker, The low volume sample baker could only be used with the Fast Run Multi
only permitted with Range capillary. The sample beakers would be filled with 4 - 5 ml sample..
Fast Run capillary For filling of the glas and plastik beakers the fill gauge must be used.

Press the key Operatr to move the cursor under the operator’s name. Now
Operator the user name can be selected by pressing the key Operatr a number of
times, or using the hot key (see chapter 8.1 on page 71). If the hot key is
double-figure (e.g. 15), the numbers 1 and 5 must be entered within 0.5
seconds of one another. Then press the key.
For your next measurement your name will be present here, so that you do
not need to enter anything.
Starting the feed-in Once you have concluded the entries, you can decide whether this sample
has a high priority and should be measured immediately or not. The sample
is placed at the back of the order queue at the position XX using the function
key Start as Pos. XX . With the function key Start as Next the sample is
measured next. This means this sample is positioned behind the
measurement that is currently running (this also includes samples which are
in the preheating position).

Automatic viscosity The viscosity determination runs automatically. The course of the
determination measurement can be seen on the display.

description of the error with the display of the error number.

Ejection of sample After the test is finished, the sample is automatically transported into the
beakers discharge tray. The magazine accommodates ten sample beakers that
should be emptied periodically as sample beakers collect. When the
magazine is full, a message appears on the display. Even with a full
magazine, all pending measurements will be completed, but it may soon be
impossible for samples to enter.
Make sure that you also empty the beaker discharge tray.

Print measurement If the parameter “Auto print” is selected the measurement result will be
result printed out at the end of the test. (See chapter General Parameters, page 58).

5.3 Order list

All samples to be measured are listed in the order list. This can be opened
from the menu Overview (Figure 52: page 51).

Figure 53: Order list window

In the order list it is still possible to delete individual orders. Sample beakers
of deleted orders are ejected.
Orders already in process cannot be deleted with this function Use the
button and then use the Abort soft key to cancel a measurement.

5.4 Empty the Slop container

General A full Slop container will interrupt the viscosity determinations. Samples
which still have to be determined will not processed. Therefore the slop
container should be emptied well-timed. During this time it is not allowed to
perform viscosity determinations. Either there are no orders in the sample
changer or both posts are in the status “paused” see chapter Cancellation of
measurement, page 54.
With Slop sensor The slop sensor (638-031) prevents overfilling of the slop container. Before
viscosity determination starts, it is checked for the message „slop full“. As
long as this is the case the viscosity determination do not start. Actual
running Viscosity determinations inclusive cleaning of the other post will be
finished.
Without Slop sensor To prevent the slop container for over filling it should be bigger as the
summary of the connected solvent containers. It is clear, that the slop
container have to be emptied, when the solvent containers will be filled.

5.5 Cancellation of measurement

Cancellation of You can cancel the measurement sequence at any time. To do this, press the
measurement key . A window, Cancel test?, opens. Now it must be decided whether
the device is to pause at the end of the measurement or whether the test
sequence is to be immediately cancelled.
Abort: The current test will be aborted and the sample will flow back
into the beaker and the capillary will be cleaned. The
measurement position will remain in the idle mode. For example:
A test should be aborted, if the sample inserted is out of the
measuring range of the capillary tube.
Pause: The pause function can be used, for example, when the HVM472
should be switched off during the night, but there are still
samples to be tested.
The sample in the capillary and the sample in the preheat position
will be measured and cleaned. Afterwards the cycle will be
stopped.
Restart the next test The next test is started with the Init key in the Test window (See chapter
5.6).

Clean Starts the cleaning cycle with the actual Parameters and runs the next sample
from the order list. If the order list is empty, will the post remain ready to
start a new sample.
Run Runs the next sample from the order list without cleaning. But it is
necessary, that the capillary is clean and dry. Otherwise please start first a
cleaning cycle with the Clean button.
Clean / Run After pressing the button Clean or Run a security question occurs. Please be
sure that the capillary is complete empty, cleaned and dry. Otherwise the
next sample will not be measured correct!
Figure 55: Initialize (Security question)

Reset

May use this function only, if the post is not responding after a error. For
example, it is not possible to feed in a sample at the sample changer. The
button Reset interrupts immediately every action of the selected post and
initialize it without influence to the other post.

5.7 Possible status of the post

Initialize If the post is switched on, the sample changer and the NTC sensors have to
be initialized. Whereby the NTC sensors are initialized when the bath
temperature is reached and stable. The initializing of the NTC sensors is only
possible when the other post is not in the status “Sa. Equilib., Sampling,
Measuring”.
Bath temp. The bath temperature is not reached or not stable.
Ready The post (capillary) has nothing to do.
Sampling The sample beaker is under the capillary and the sampling is started.
Sa. Equili. The sample is in the capillary and the sample is to be equilibrated. The
equilibration time depends from the parameter Equilibr. time 1 and 2.
Measuring The measuring of the sample is started. The detection system measure the
time between the “upper” and “lower” NTC sensor. If the measure
parameters (Max no. of flows, do all flows, tolerance) are not fulfilled, the
next determination starts.
Let out The Viscosity determination is finished, the result is in the database stored.
Now the sample flows back to the sample beaker. The let out time should
ensure, that the complete capillary is empty. It depends on which bulb the
sample was measured, the flow time and the viscosity of the sample. It varies
between 25 seconds and could be longer as 20 Minutes.
Wait It could sometimes happen, that one post has to wait for actions that are
running on the other post.
Cleaning The capillary is flushed with solvent.
Drying Air is pressed through the capillary to dry it. The drying time depends to the
Parameter “Drying time”.
Paused The post is paused. To restart see chapter 5.6 on page 55.
Stop The post is stopped. To restart see chapter 5.6 on page 55.
Sa. moving A sample is moving in the sample changer
Diagnostic The post is in the diagnostic mode.
Error An error had occurred. To open the message window press the button

6.3 Parameters for the left measuring post

With the function key Left you call up the window Parameters: Left Post.
In the menu Parameters: Left measuring post the parameters for the
viscosity determination at the left measuring point, e.g. bath temperature,
temperature stabilization time, tolerance, etc., are summarized.
Temp. unit Selects the desired temperature unit °C or °F.
Bath temp. Entry of the set-point temperature for the viscometer bath.
Equilibr. time 1 Time in which the sample at least remains in the viscosity analyzer during
the first measurement cycle before the measurement sequence begins (run-
out of the sample).
Equilibr. time 2 Time in which the sample at least remains in the viscosity analyzer during
the repeat measurement before the measurement sequence begins (run-out of
the sample).
This time can be selected shorter than Equilibr. time 1, because part of the
sample remains in the stabilized part of the capillary tube during a repeat
measurement.
Type of equilibr The equilibration of the sample could be done in the static or dynamic mode.
Static: The sample will remain n the capillary without movement
Dynamic: The sample will be moved around the „upper“ NTC sensor.
The idea of the dynamic equilibration is to achieve a shorter
equilibration time.
If the sample is volatile this parameter should be set to
“static”.
Max no. of flows Maximum number of measurements (times) to be carried out with a sample.
If, for example, the value is set to 1, the viscosity determination is terminated
after the first run-out time.
If, for example, the value is set to 4, the viscosity determination is terminated
once two consecutive run-out times are obtained within the set Tolerance.
If, after four run-out times, the set Tolerance is not achieved, the viscosity
determination is cancelled.
Do all flows If this parameter is set to "Yes", repeat measurements are carried out until
the maximum number of measurements of the parameter Max. no. of flows
has been reached. In this case the set Tolerance is not taken into account.
Tolerance Maximum percentage deviation that two consecutive run-out times may have
in order to successfully terminate the viscosity determination.

The parameters Preheat temp and Preheat time are only regarded when the
parameter Preheatp. left is set to "Yes" in the menu Parameters General.

Preheat temp. Set-point temperature for the preheat position.
The temperatures for slop tube and slop bowl are set in dependence of the
 bath temperature.
The slop tube temperature is set to the same value like the bath, but it’s
limited to max. 110°C. The slop bowl temperature is also set to the value of
the bath, but it’s limited to max. 120°C.

60 Setting parameters Version 4.1F

Operation Instruction Viscosity Analyzer HVM 472

Preheat time Minimum time for which the sample is to be placed in the preheater.

The parameters Solvent 3 and Solvent 4 are only regarded, when the
parameter No. of solvents is set to the appropriate number in the menu

Parameters General.

The following 12 flushing cycle settings take into account the sample
 viscosity relative to the measurement range of the capillary tube, because
 highly viscous samples may require more intensive flushing than thinner
samples.

Low Visc. Sol. 1 With a low viscosity relative to capillary tube, number of flushing cycles

Chapter 8 Operator List and Login Levels

This Chapter ... ...is aimed at operating personnel

... contains information on operator list and permission of access,
password protection.

8.1 Operator List

You call up the by selecting the function key Opr. Li. the window Operator
list.

Figure 66 Operator list

Operator list There is no relation between the operator list and the access levels. The
operator list is only a “database” to make it easier and faster to chose the
operator during start of a sample. The length of the operator list is restricted
to 20. If one name is deleted from the operator list it will remain a blank line.
So the “hot key” for the other operators will not change.
Operator name 10 alphanumeric signs is the maximum length.
Hot key The “Hot key” number is used during start of a sample to chose the operator
very fast from a list of operators. See chapter 0 on page 49. It is not possible
to edit the number.

8.2 Login, Access levels

You call up the by selecting the function key Login the window Access
level.
Access level The access levels with password protection are used to keep the parameters
or calibration data safe. So it is impossible to make changes for unauthorized
people.

Figure 67 Access level

Do Test This level allows only to perform tests and to look for all data.

Version 4.1F Operator List and Login Levels 71

Operation Instruction Viscosity Analyzer HVM 472

This levels allows also to change the parameters and to use the diagnostic
Config
test
Calibr. This level opens the access to use all functions of the unit. Also change of
the calibration (bath temperature, constancies) is possible.
Change Here it is possible to change the password for the actual access level.

8.2.1 Change Access Levels

Change without use If no password was ever set, or the password is deleted, the new access level
of password is activated immediately.

Change with use of If a password is used, the window (see Figure 68: Login with password use)
password is opened. Now it is necessary to key in the correct password and to press the
OK button.

Figure 68: Login with password use

Correct password If the password is correct, it is possible to have access to the chosen level.
Wrong password If the password is wrong, the access level is set to the lowest level, “Do test”.
Forgotten password If the password is forgotten, it is possible to reset it. Therefore open the
window for enter the password for the access level, which belongs to the
forgotten password (see Figure 68: Login with password use). Now it is
necessary to press more than twenty times the left small function key in the
window password.
The password is now reset to default and the access
to the chosen level is open. If this access level should
be password protected, it is necessary to change the password.

8.2.2 Change password

New password Key in the new password. Only numeric signs are allowed.
Repeat password Repeat the password and press the Save button. If there is a difference
between the new and repeated password it will not be accepted.

1. Check the perpendicularly of the capillaries (see chapter 3.4 on page
31).
2. If a cooler is used check the temperature difference between cooler
and bath temp. (See chapter 0 on page 34).
3. Calibrate the needed bath temperatures of both bathes (see chapter
11.1.1 on page 104).
4. Verify the timing device (see chapter 11.1.2 on page 106).
5. Calibrate the capillary of both bathes (see chapter 11.1.2 on page
106).

Version 4.1F Maintenance and Calibration 103

Operation Instruction Viscosity Analyzer HVM 472

11.1.1 Bath Temperature Calibration

1. Have a reference thermometer on
hand with:
- suitable temperature range (i.e. 40°
and 100°C)
- 0.01°C graduation and
- sufficient accuracy (i.e. with
calibration certificate)
2. Shut off the main switch, disconnect
the mains plug
3. Open the cover plate of the upper
compartment.
4. Place the thermometer in the bath that
you have chosen to calibrate. Use the
opening next to the capillary.
(Carefully turn the light barrier in Figure 79: Reference thermometer in place
case it shuts the opening)

5. Make sure that you can read the

thermometer mercury stem.
6. Close the housing and connect the
mains plug. Switch on the main
switch
7. Press the Bath function key of the post
you have chosen to calibrate.

Figure 81: Unit calibration

Figure 80: Reference thermometer in place
8. The bath temperature setting you have
chosen, for example 40°C, is now indicated in the headline.
In case you have not previously selected the desired bath temperature, go
to the Parameter menu and change the bath temperature. Then come
back to the bath temperature calibration menu.

Figure 82: Calibration Left Bath

9. Wait as long as the Bathtemp. Status indication has changed from not
stable to stable.
10. Make sure that the reference thermometer is also stable. It is assumed to
be stable when the indication of 0.01°C does not change within 5
minutes.

104 Maintenance and Calibration Version 4.1F

Operation Instruction Viscosity Analyzer HVM 472

11. Let us assume that 39.88°C is the stable indication of the reference
thermometer.
Key in this number in the line after Ref. Temp. Therm.: 39.88
12. Press the Start calibr. Soft key. The Instrument software will
calculate the offset and start to adjust the bath temperature to the desired
value. When the deviation only was a few tenth of °C or less it will take a
few minutes until the Bathtemp. Status indication has changed from not
stable to stable. Now the reference thermometer reading should be
precisely what you have selected as bath temperature. In case of a slight
deviation repeat step 9 to 12.
13. Press the Print soft key to get a printout of all calibration data.
14. By pressing the List soft key, a list with all set temperatures and
their corresponding offsets is shown. Although it is possible to enter set
points at this level, it is recommended to use this possibility only in case,
when the central processor unit has been changed and you want to avoid a
complete new calibration. This requires that you have the printed list of
the offsets as described in step 13.

Figure 83: Calibration: List Left Bath

15. Shut off the main switch, disconnect the mains plug
16. Open the cover plate of the upper
compartment.
17. Take the thermometer out of the
bath
18. Close the housing and connect the
mains plug. Switch on the main
switch

11.1.2 Timing Device Verification

The purpose of the verification is to check for the integrity of the HVM472
timing device.
1. Have a calibrated stop watch on hand with a discrimination of 0.1s or
better
2. Go to the Calibration menu and press on the right hand page
the Timing device soft key.

Figure 84: Verification of the Timing device

3. Press the Start soft key. Start the stopwatch if you hear the first beep of
the unit buzzer. Every full minute gives the unit a beep. Wait a sufficient
time and stop the watch if you hear the beep. It is recommended to make
this test with a multiple of the max. flow time of 500 seconds (for
instance 60 – 300 minutes) in order to neglect any human error. Let us
assume a required timing accuracy of 0.05%, which is 0.01s for the
shortest flow time of 20 s. With a 2000 s verification, the permissible
instrument error is then 1s, which is much higher than the human error of
0.1 – 0.3 s.
4. Compare the result with the requirements of the applied viscosity
standard.

11.1.3 Capillary calibration

The following example is for a 2 - 200 mm2/s capillary that is in the left
bath.
1. The HVM´s multi range capillary has 3 bulbs, which represent 3 capillary
constants C1 (upper bulb), C2 (middle bulb) and C3 (lower bulb). Where
a typical factor of 4 .. 5 is between the lower to the next higher constant.
C1 is the smallest, C2 the middle and C3 the largest constant. It is
necessary to calibrate all 3 constants. Let us have a look on
the2 – 200 mm2/s capillary. Where:
C1  0.02 and the range is 2 – 10 mm2/s;
C2  0.1 and the range is 9 – 45 mm2/s;
C3  0.5 and the range is 40 – 200 mm2/s
2. Have PAC Certified Reference Material on hand with viscosities that are
about 2%, 10% and 75% of the entire range and which can be used to
calibrate all 3 constants of the capillary at a temperature of your choice.
For example: when you wish to calibrate a 2 - 200 mm2/s capillary, take
CRMs for 4, 20 and 150 mm2/s.

3. Go to the Parameter menu and there select the Left soft-key. Scroll
down to Max Nbr. Flows and key in 5 or better 9 flows.
Than set in the next line Do all Flows to Yes.
4. Insert your CRM samples in the instrument and wait for the results that
should be within the expected accuracy. Discard outliers when necessary.
5. Calculate the 3 constants by dividing the viscosity given in the CRM
certificate by the mean of the flow times of the 3 results:
Example: The CRM certificate states in the C1 range (upper bulb) a
viscosity of 4.125 mm2/s and you got flow times of:
Flow time 1: 202.02s
Flow time 2: 202.01s
Flow time 3: 202.01s
Flow time 4: 202.00s
Flow time 5: 202,01s
which represent a mean of 202.01s than:
C1 = 4.125 mm2/s / 202.01s = 0.0204197 mm2/s2
6. Go to the Calibration menu and press under Left
post the Capill soft key.

Figure 85: Calibration: Left post capillary

Key in the calculated constants rounded to five significant digits obtained

under step 5
C1 = 0.0204197 mm2/s2  0.020420 mm2/s2
7. In lower line Viscosity range you may type in the entire range of the
capillary (2 - 200 mm2/s), which then will show up in the Start sample
window where information about the measurement range of your
capillaries is useful.
8. A more advanced calibration can be done with 2 CRMs per constant.
9. Normally a calibration at one temperature should be sufficient because
the HVM472 capillaries are made of low expansion borosilicate glass.

11.2.3 Update of the temperature measurement

The software of the temperature measurement is on a flash located on the
board. It is not possible to change the flash and therefore it is necessary to
change the complete board.
This means that is necessary to calibrate the bath temperatures after change
of the boards.
The temperature measurement board is located in a special housing in the
upper compartment.

Chapter 12 Instrument Communication

This chapter... ...is aimed at operating personnel

...contains information on communication with a connected personal
computer.

12.1 Connection of input and output units

12.1.1 Connecting the Printer

Connecting a The results of the viscosity measurements and the parameters of the
standard printer measurement can be printed out as a report by connecting the equipment to a
printer.
Use a standard printer with an internal ASCII character set and a Centronics
interface (Attention: some new printers do not have an internal character set!).
Select further the basic printer type in the “Unit Parameters” menu (see
chapter 6). If you do not know the printer type you have to select (Epson, HP,
or Citizen), try it out. In most cases the Epson type will work.
To connect the printer to the HVM 472, use a parallel printer cable, e.g.
626-053.

Some types of printers must be switched on, before the HVM472 is switched
on. Only during the initialization of the HVM472 would the printer be
 configured.

12.1.2 LIMS

Connection of host To transfer test results to the PC connect the PC with a serial connection
PC (cable 626-072) to the interface „RS 232“ at the back of the unit.
Configuration of the The serial interface is configured with the following parameters:
serial interface
19200 Baud
8 Data bit
1 Start bit
1 Stop bit
Manual and autom. The results can transferred by the test unit either automatically or manually
Result transfer (see Chapter. General Parameters, page 58and Data Base: Transfer, page 68),
or can be demanded by the host computer.
