ABSTRACT

Contract farming can be referred as an agreement between farmers and

processing and marketing firms for the production and supply of agricultural
products under forward agreements, frequently at predetermined prices. Contract
Farming has become relevant in view of the recent decision of the Govt. of India
permitting entry of FDI in multi-brand retail sector. In the wake of liberalization,
the concept of contract farming in which national or multinational companies
enter into contracts for marketing and providing technologies and invest capital.

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Concept

FarmTract is an agri-startup that aims to provide farmers with essential capital

they are lacking by connecting them with potential investors through an online
portal. This online portal can be used in the following two major ways -
➢ Investors can invest in the farmer’s land and be a benefactor of the farmer’s
business. The investor in return will get a set percentage of the profit that
will be brokered prior to the capital payment.
➢ If a farmer doesn’t own land and needs work, he/she can be hired on a
contract basis by the investors on their land.
The online portal will be a website. The website will fully cater to the above-
mentioned functionalities, but will not be limited to it. Through this website, the
farmers and investors will get to know the best crops to grow and the best methods
to do so. This information will be provided from the collective intelligence of
human experts and predictive analytics. The regional, as well as the global
demand for crops, will be taken into account while suggesting the most profitable
crops. The bargain between the farmers and the investors will be negotiated on
their own, with the concerned parties discussing their deliverables and making
the payments through our website. The major ROI (Return on investment) for
FarmTract will be the shares taken from the invested money as well as the profits.
The website will also be monetized with the help of advertisements.

Page | 7
1.2. Problem Statement

The mission of FarmTract is to break the chain of middle-man interference in the

agriculture sector which is a cause for loss to farmers and high prices to
customers. Our project aims to support farmers in a symbiotic manner, helping
them from getting rid of being harassed by middlemen and loan sharks who extort
them for profit.
The team is dedicated to the betterment of the agricultural community, and we
intend to do so by using technology to our advantage. As mentioned earlier, our
goal is to make a website where farmers and sellers can interact directly. We
assure the stakeholders that we won’t ourselves become the extorting middlemen,
as we will only charge a fee once a profit has incurred on a piece of land. The
website will have fraud detection capabilities, high payment security, user
privacy, and strict moderation of interactions. The collective intelligence of
human experts and predictive analytics that is included in the website will provide
information that will help farmers and investors will get to know the best crops
to grow and the best methods to do so.
The capital investment market is populated with many similar startups. But often,
in such platforms, there is an imbalance of power favoring the investors. There is
also a trend of exploiting those in need, especially if they are illiterate and don’t
know the legal consequences of certain clauses in the agreements drawn up. So
to overcome problems from the existing solutions we are coming up with ideas
to make it more potent. They can bargain and make up their deals based on their
requirements. It will be responsive and highly interactive which includes the best
security features. However, we will train the farmers to strike deals that work out
in their favor too. The interest rates charged will be strictly the same as those
charged by government banks on loans.
The vision of FarmTract is to create an empowered agricultural community. We
want to lead a collaborative environment between agri-startups and the

Page | 8
stakeholders. There has been a long-standing communication gap between
government officials and farmers. As such, the policies created are a far cry from
what the community needs. FarmTract aims to bridge this gap. It’s no surprise
that the agricultural industry is the backbone of the Indian economy. And we, as
a team, want to help those that are essential contributors to the industry to fight
back against the exploitation and disregard they are currently facing.

1.3. Objectives of the Work

➢ FarmTract UI will be easy to use and interact with. We aim to bring forth
a sophisticated portal for farmer and contractor interactions. Our website
adheres to traditional user interaction principles to allow a higher influx
and engagement of farmers and investors alike.
➢ The payment portal will be easy and will transfer money directly to the
bank. We will make a portal in a way that doesn’t lead to wrong money
transfers.
➢ Contract related Law complication will be smoothened in our website so
that our both party don’t have any misunderstandings.
➢ Money won’t be charged from farmers in case of small profit and if
charged also then in case of hefty profit that also will be minimal.
➢ We will provide support to farmers in each step from making the land
ready for sowing to harvesting so that farmers don’t feel alone.
➢ Our expert will provide farmers advice on choosing the correct crop, soil
health, suitable fertilizers and pesticides to be used, and the right time for
harvesting the produce.
➢ FarmTract will also advise investors to invest in land which will be
profitable for them and also will keep them updated about crops whose
demand will be high or whose price may go up in near future.

Page | 9
➢ Our advertisement will be agriculture-based and knowledgeable for our
stakeholders. The advertisement would not only be for money but also for
enhancement of our stakeholder knowledge.
➢ Our aim would be to earn the trust of our customers, not money because
trust can only create wealth for a long time. Because we want our startup
to survive and cater services for the long haul.
➢ This is a system we are developing for a problem that is very complex and
existed for a long time. So to change this lot of hurdles will come in the
form of grievances of our farmers and stakeholders alike. Our topmost
priority would be to have proper grievance redressal protocol and its
proper functioning.

o Flask
➢ PHP Mailer for Sending & Receiving Mails.
➢ Stripe Gateway for Payment.

Page | 11
➢ MPDF for Pdf Contract Generation.
Farmtract is developed using PHP backend which has been integrated with a
Machine Learning model which is fetched using an API built in flask, for payment
to farmers a third party application Stripe has been used and for the contract bond
generation we have used MPDF. We have also used PHP Mailer to send & receive
mails from our website for user verification. Machine learning models that we
have used here includes Linear Regressor and Ensemble learning models such as
Random Forest Regressor and Decision Tree from which we get an accuracy of
95% approximately which helps to predict the production of crop on the basis of
area, district, state, season and crop.

2.2. Human Resources Strategy

Technical Stakeholders:
Personnel that are solely responsible for managing the technical aspects of the
startup, taking care of the user experience of the website and provide accurate
information on what action to be taken from the raw input data using machine
learning and data science
➢ Database Manager: Maintaining the in-person stakeholder database as well
as providing the in-situ data for deciding the crop suitable for land.
➢ Machine Learning specialist: Best ML techniques are decided and
implemented upon the input data to provide more efficient and accurate
results in deciding the crop.
➢ Front-end Developer: Maintaining Farmtact website and profile
management of farmers and investors to ensure smooth transition of
agreements.
➢ Back-end Developer/Server Manager: Real-time updation of databases to
provide better website hits by scaling during huge traffic.

Page | 12
➢ Trainee program monitor: Looking after the trainee learning section for
larger engagement of farmers to use Farmtract and also enhance user
experience.
In-person Stakeholders:
➢ Farmer: Primary in-person stakeholder of FarmTract, who is contacted by
the investor after putting up their land for contract.
➢ Investor: Primary in-person stakeholder of FarmTract, who contacts and
participates in a transaction with the farmer after finding a suitable land
and crop to grow from ML recommender system.
➢ Supplier: Secondary stakeholder who is involved with the farmers to
cultivate the land by providing wet, dry and hardware supplies and
infrastructure.
➢ Agricultural expert: Ensures meticulous information about the crop and
land is conveyed to farmer and investor.
➢ Grievances and communications: Coordinating communications between
farmers and investors. Record the grievances of either of the parties and
pass it on to the Comms. depart.
➢ Legal documentation Expert: Responsible for all entities involved in
Farmtract to be approved, licensed and registered as legal. And also ensure
good relationships with government bodies.

2.3. Financial Strategy

Financial Requirement Statement:

Initial requirements will be fulfilled with the help of mutual contribution and
small bank loans. After successful working of 3-6 months if we will be in a
position to make profit after cutting out all expenses, we will invest it back to the
startup. After 3-6 months we will be reaching out to different investors who will
be interested in investing in our startup.

Page | 13
In the 1 year plan, we will be taking loans from banks and also collaborating with
different companies.

Our 3 year plan will be that if we are having good revenue then we will be turning
in our revenue and investing by ourselves. After working for 3 years we will be
registering our portal as a firm according to the companies act, 2013 as a public
company limited by shares with directorial remuneration of 1% each. Expansion
into other agricultural sectors is foreseeable.

After 5 years we will be evaluating our start up and if we see any future in the
company then we will go for big investments and we will be targeting big
investors.

Startup Expenses and Capitalization:

Plan:

Awareness campaign on panchayat level so that majority of farmers can be

benefitted. Help from agriculture universities in campaigning and publicizing our
ideas. Help from KVK (Krishi Vigyan Kendra) to gain information about the
different crop varieties and their expenditure so that farmers get fair prices for
their produce.

Cost: We can start with RS 10,00,000/ year.

Bug bounty program:

Building it right the first time is a myth. The best developers in the world still
leave unexpected vulnerabilities open. Therefore, providing better security will
be a major issue, so we will list our website in bug bounty programs like
HackerOne & BugCrowd where we will invite bug hunters to find security
vulnerabilities in our system and give bounty according to the impact of the bug.

Page | 14
Cost: Can range from RS 1000 for low impact bugs to RS 10000 for critical bugs.

Capitalization:

We will have our own share when the contractor will have a contract with a
farmer. Also we will be charging some money when the farmer has some profit
after farming and is paying back to the contractor. Our WebApp will also be
funded by advertisements. We will be partnering with companies active in the
agriculture sector User friendly Ads - Ads will be thoroughly filtered so that
farmers see only agriculture related advertisements such as: - Seeds and
fertilizers, agricultural equipment etc. Video ads related to farming and other
agricultural practices.

Government funded programs like Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY):

The government is working on nurturing the incubation ecosystem under the

Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY). It has already funded 112 startups with
Rs 11.85 crore. These Agri start-ups have been trained in 29 agri-business
incubation centres across the country. In total, the Ministry has funded 346
startups with a sum of Rs 36.71 crore.

Financial Expenses:

AWS web server cost-:

To deploy our website we would need а large space over the internet to place our
web app which we would have to request from any domain name website like
GoDaddy. We will be using AWS EC2 for this. The great thing about AWS is
‘you pay for what you use’ so it provides a secure, resizable compute capacity in
the cloud which is a necessity for our application. AWS has a per second billing
plan. With per-second billing, we have to pay for only what we use. It takes the

Page | 15
cost of unused minutes and seconds in an hour off of the bill, so we can focus on
improving your applications instead of maximizing usage to the hour.

Plan: $0.204 per Hour for a A1 2x large server with 16 GB RAM 8 CPUs.

Cost: RS 1,30,000/ year (Approx.)

Advertisement Campaign Costs -:

For publicity of our application and to help raise awareness amongst the farmers
in the public we would need а strong marketing team which will help us spread
the word. This can be done in various ways.

Developers cost -:

Front End Developers- To keep updating the website and to keep adding
functionalities to the product whenever required and to maintain the design of the
website as per industry standards.

Back End Developers- To keep track of the database and to make sure there are
no errors in terms of data consistency and data redundancy.

Customer relation Specialists- To make sure the Customers are happy at all times
and to answer any queries or problems they might be facing during their time
using the application.

R/D or Scientific team- This team will be providing technical guidance to our
farmers so that they can increase their productivity.

Marketing team- They would be responsible for PR and Management work of the
application.

Total Cost: Approx. 5,00,000/ month.

Page | 16
2.4. Marketing Strategy

1. Contacting Farmers/Farmer organisations/Farmer unions - Contacting

farmers directly is very important. We can organise workshops on how to use the
website and educate them about website and online transactions.

2. Maintaining customer relations - As it is said that having 10 loyal customers

is way more important than having 100 customers. So having a good customer
relation is a great way to build up a loyal customer base.

3. Digital(Social Media) marketing - Paid search has become a popular

advertising channel for start-ups. It allows business owners to buy laser-targeted
traffic from search engines like Google and Bing. Google AdWords and Bing
Ads are two of the leading paid search networks, both of which feature keyword
targeting with a cost-per-click (CPC) pricing model. Advertising in social media
platforms like giving ads in Facebook and making business profiles in Facebook
and Instagram and other social media sites can help us to reach many people on
a large scale in a small period.

4. Handing out flyers - A large portion of people still either don't have access to
social media or are too busy to spend their time on them. Flyers are a good way
to reach them, because flyers can be handed out in mass numbers, there is a good
chance that a busy person will somehow come across at least one of them.

5. Giving brochures to users - It will help us to give a perfect introduction of

our business and can also help us to expand our business’s visibility.

6. Making business cards - Giving business cards to people can make it easy for
them to contact us easily using details on the card. This also increases people’s
trust towards the company.

Page | 17
7. Giving seasonal discount - Reduced price to encourage the purchase of a
particular product in the off-season; perhaps better thought of as an out-of-season
discount.

8. Regular updates to users through messages and emails - Giving updates of

recent discounts and offers can help us to gain more attraction towards our
product. This also keeps customers in loop and informed about our latest
products/services.

9. Identifying and keeping an eye on the competitors - It will help us to

understand your competitive advantages and disadvantages relative to others in
the market. Generate understanding of competitors' current and future plans.
Provide information to develop strategies that could create competitive advantage
in the future.

10. Advertising through print media - Through print media advertisements

appear in newspapers or magazines and are sometimes included as brochures or
fliers. Anything written in the print media to grab the attention of the specific
target audience comes under the purview of print advertising.

2.5. Production Department

➢ The product that FarmTract is building is a website.

➢ It requires -
o Maintenance of the website.

2.8. Experimental Procedure & Mathematical Calculation

→ Crop Prediction

We have taken a dataset of crop_production from kaggle consisting of 2,50,000

sample data and have taken few features in consideration such as state_name,
district_name, season_name(rabi/kharif/whole year), crop_name and area of land
for predicting the production of a particular crop in a particular season. We have
imported Regression model from sklearn library and also trained our model using
ensemble learning methods such as Random Forest Regressor and comparing
both the models we get an accuracy of 32.15% from the linear regression model
and 95.78% from random forest regressor so we have taken random forest
regressor as our primary model and predicted the estimated production of crop
with 95% efficiency.

CONCLUSION

4.1. Conclusion

A minimum viable product of FarmTract was pitched and implemented as a

website. The website is capable of connecting farmers to potential investors so as
to provide them with the essential capital they are lacking. The initial stage of
authentication and authorization caters to the minimum security requirements of
the website. This platform has a direct inclusion of farmers and increases their
reach. It will open up new markets and avenues which would otherwise be
unavailable to the farmers. Money is taken by the business only when the farmers
incur a profit. In this way, middleman exploitation is decreased. FarmTract is
ready to be released in the capital investment market and improve the software
and business plan by taking into consideration the feedback. The team is
dedicated to the expansion and empowerment of the agricultural community.

4.2. Future Scope

Due to the present pandemic situation, everyone is having communication on

online platforms but many of the farmers right now won’t be familiar with making
use of our FarmTract website and they need guidance. So we planned on
assigning a team to convey to them the use and goal of this website and
instructions on how to upload their farming fields images on our website as well
as details of the crop, etc. Unfortunately, now physical guidance is not possible
so we will be assigning an online technical team in the near future to make this
happen. We already started promoting our startup in all means mainly on social
media like LinkedIn, Instagram, etc and we also have a decent number of
followers which is getting increased gradually which helps us to reach far better
to both investors and farmers.
