Lesson Elements of Poetry

Outcome At the end of the lesson students will be able to:


A. Identify the elements of poetry
B. Interpret the meaning of the song using the elements of
content and form
C. Compose a quatrain poem about a friend, parent, or pet.

Teaching Procedure I. Presentation

Display in a Power Point Presentation and read the poem “Love


one another by Khalil Gibran” aloud. Then make students quietly
reread it.
Explain that a stanza is a group of lines that are set apart from
other groups of lines by highlighting or pointing out a stanza.
Tell students that text is divided into chunks in several genres of
writing to make it easier to read, such as a chapter in a book.
Moreover, discuss the Elements of the Poetry one by one with
adequate examples such as the Rhyme, Rhyme Scheme, Theme,
Symbolism, and the Imagery.
Review the given example as you introduce each element, and ask
students to come up with and share additional examples.

II. Activities

A. Application

For a group activity, prepare a song lyrics and hand it out to the
students.
In here, let them interpret the meaning of the song, its content and
form using the elements of poetry being discussed.

Have students identify the different examples of content (as


provided) in the song lyrics by underlining each in the color
indicated. If the content is implied rather than stated explicitly,
students can write it on the page in the appropriate color. For
example, if the topic is not stated in the lyrics, students should
write it on the page in red.

 FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE: Pink
 IMAGERY: Purple

Compare poetry to song lyrics, both of which use elements of content


to convey meaning and emotion.

B. Generalization

Have a recap discussion about the lesson to let the students be


able to familiarize and master the topic.

C. Evaluation

Finally, have students apply the skills learned to try writing their
own poem about a friend, parent, or their pet. Provide a direction
and criteria that they should follow for the final activity.
Answer the following:
             1. What theory did you employ in your lesson?
    2. What strategies did you use to clearly show the theory in the discussion?
     3. How was technology utilized?
