PROCESS CONTROL ENGINEER

EXPERENCE

Barton Mines, North River, New York

Control Specialist
2003-2004
Automate the Garnet concentration Ruby Mountain Mill by identifying non-optimiz
ed
process equipment, recommend the type of process control sensors needed a
nd
supervising the installation of the process control system.
Review and evaluate the top state of the art DCS systems including the new Hybr
id
PLC systems for use in the concentrate plant. The DeltaV system made by E
merson was
chosen.
The system is due to be installed in January 2004.
Worked with the IT department of Barton Mines to make sure the historically PI
database created by the DeltaV has the information that they will need.

Process Control 1986 - 2001
Constructed and managed the Process Control Department improving the control of
the pulp, coating and paper processes.
Responsible for the programming and installation of a Distributed Control Syste
m (DCS) manufactured by ABB in the coating prep area. This effectively improved
productivity of the coating prep area especially in running many trials using m
ultiple pigments, adhesives and additives nearly everyday forced by market condi
tions. The understanding of the coating makedown and methods of application with
different reology is very important when programming the Distributed Control Sy
stem. The control system in the batch coating prep made coatings faultlessly (at
least five different coatings were made for the three paper machines every day)
alone saving at least $200,000/year in inventory control and an estimated $400,
000/year in cost of Quality.
Responsible for the programming and installation of six Distributed Control Sys
tems (DCS) manufactured by ABB. This effectively improved productivity and redu
ced waste in the Deinking, Stock Blending, refining and the paper machines. Sav
ing were seen in the mills areas of Deinking ($100,000/year), Stock Blending ($4
00,000), Refining ($50,000/year) and paper machine (especially in #11 Coated PM
with $1,000,000/year).
Generated and installed a DEC Pathworks network for exchanging data throughout
the mill.
Performed all duties (such as backups, maintenance, justifying adding new user
accounts, network nodes, upgrading software and hardware) of a VMS system manage
r and an NT administrator for all employees (600 persons).
Worked with IT, accounting and standards cost to be sure they received all the
data they needed.

Developed and installed Graphics OSI PI Software to act as the data historian f
or all major areas of the mill.
Used HP UNIX workstation to act as interface between the DCS systems and PI.
Constructed and programmed the VMS PI-Nets to act as the profile interface for
PI.
Assisted in team installation and arrangement of Mountain Systems Prophecy Prog
ram Suite. Prophecy Suite, as quality historian, replaced the IP Developed QDS
system. Work included transferring all QDS data files to SQL Prophecy files.
Established at least 17 PI interfaces between Moores, AB-PLC, ABB DCS Systems,
PPR (IP Production Program Oracle based) and confidential links with pape
r machine
scanning computers and used VB programming with dat
a in PI system.
Revamped the existing coax network into a fiber optic system using Cisco Switch
es that are managed by Windows NT servers. This includes applications running on
Vax and Alpha computers.
Justified and installed two Valmet and one ABB 1190 paper machine scanning comp
uter systems including eleven frames with 30 sensors.
Managed the sensor reliability contractor crew, which performs all the scanning
computer maintenance.
Performed process variability audits using the DCS system and the PI system as
a problem-solving tool.
Used maintenance software to analysis over 300 loops all over the mill and make
an exclusion report every day. This report was used by the electrical crew in m
aintenance and by he process control group in optimization.
Linked all the Moore controllers in the powerhouse and created graphics showing
operation and control in PI.
Linked all the AB-PLC (AB-PLC 5) with PI and created all graphics (IR dryer, Wa
ter Treatment, 9 refiners, and two dam Hydro system using DH+ networks).
Designed graphics to show control of 4 Supercalanders profiles both manual inpu
ts and scanning profiles.
Created a real time cost display that uses the DCS systems and to some extent a
ll instrumentation, accounting and SAP.
Created 26 Html pages to be used in IPs Intranet for product development.
Working on plotting coat weight vs gloss and supercalander parameters when I wa
s downsized.

Superintendent, Technical & Environmental 1981 - 1986

Supervised the technical and environmental departments. This included the techni
cal labs, paper testing and the wastewater treatment plant. Held responsibility
for all air, water & solid waste permits.
Reduced wet end chemical costs 30% by reducing the use of a base chemical.
Organized database and entry screens, improving Lab Technician productivity.
Initiated High Brightness coated paper grades resulting in additional grade of
ferings and increasing profit margin.
Supervised methods to increase brightness of groundwood.
Introduced the first computer network in the mill to record valuable papermakin
g data.
Headed cost reduction plan committee, which provided reduction of the paper mil
ls variable cost by 20% over several years.

Superintendent, Technical Services 1978 - 1981
Directed Technical, Coating, Quality and Environment Departments.
Developed new high efficiency cationic starch resulting in starch cost reductio
n of $100,000.
Saved TiO2 wet end cost by 75% using specific formulated wet end retention aids
.

Supervisor, Coating Prep 1976 - 1978

Controlled Coating Prep Department. This resulted in producing five different co
atings for three paper machines each day.
Improved quality of coatings by introducing a Plant Quality Rating System.
Reduced coating cost and enhanced paper quality by switching PVAC for SBR Latex
in the coating process.
International Paper, North Tonawanda New York
