GE 6 SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY Unit 1 Worksheets

Briefly explain your work using 5-10 sentences. (10 points)

The fundamental relationship between science, technology, and ethics is frequently claimed to be
one of neutrality. After all, science and technology can be used for good or bad uses by good or
bad people; they are thus value-neutral. It is sometimes implied, paradoxically, that this neutrality
is the unique advantage of science and technology. In contrast, critics have argued that arguments
of neutrality are attempts to avoid taking responsibility for the desired outcomes of various
scientific and technological projects. How can weaponized anthrax spores designed to kill people
be described as value-neutral? This entry attempts to reference some of these claims and
counterclaims and provide an explanation.
