Terrazzo Flooring

Terrazzo is a manufactured composite of natural marble chips, with durable aggregates set in a
cement matrix with added color. The marble chips can be selected from a wide range of colors
in practically any color of cement matrix to create any type of effect. The terrazzo aggregate
and marble chips surface is polished after the matrix has set. The most extensive use of terrazzo
is for floors, whether in situ or in tiles.

For this a hard surface is required which is referred as the substrate generally the PCC (Plain
Cement Concrete).

Step 1:-
Clean the surface form any sort of dust with the help of clean water (portable water) or diluted
hydrochloric acid along with an iron brush.

Step 2:-
The surface has to always be moist. Along with this we also need to determine the size of the chip that
has to be used. The size of the marble chips vary from 2mm to 12mm. The 2mm marble chip is referred
as 0 grades.

A mix is created with the help of 3 parts of cement and one part of marble powder. They are mixed with
the chips with the proportion of 1:1.75, where 1 part is cement and the rest part is mix A.

If we are using 2mm marble chips then the terrazzo flooring will not be more than 6mm. The thickness
of the terrazzo flooring is determined by the size of the chips.

This has to be done in parts as the entire flooring cannot be done within one day. Therefore the size of
the each terrazzo shall not be more than 2 meter square.

In case of terrazzo flooring the substrate has to be done in two layers so that the glass can be placed.

After this the top layers is allowed to settle for 36 hours. After this with the help of grinding machine and
carbonrndum stones 60 nos is used till the marble chips are reasonably visible.

The same old mix of marble chips and marble powder is poured on the flooring and this is knowns as the
grouting coat and this is left for 5 to 7 days.

After 7 days, grinding in 2nd phase takes place with the same stone of 120 Nos.

After 2 to 3 days the third grinding is done with the same stone of 240 Nos.
When all this is done, the surface is cleaned and mopped with water. After this Oxhylic Acid is used and
sprinkled at the rate of 30 gms per square meter and slight sprinkle of portable water.

After this, the grinding machine replaces the stones with Mandha and polished. And then the final
cleaning is done.
