What are the Traditional and Dance Festival?
A traditional dance could also be considered as folk dance. Folk
dance is developed from a group of people living in a particular cultural
community.
Dance festivals are performed by the community to celebrate
fiestas, weddings, thanksgivings, and other occasions.
What is an example of a lively festival dance?
An example of a lively folk dance is Lapay Bantigue which is
celebrated annually every 3rd of September. The dance is also recognized
even during the Spanish regime. It is now renowned by the Cultural Center
of the Philippines to be one of the official folk dances in the Philippines.
The dance originated from the seagulls called “Lapay”. This
beautiful scenery of flying birds is one of the most typical and beautiful
sceneries, which may enjoy in Barangay Bantigue, Masbate.
The folk dance is called “Lapay Bantigue” which means “Seagulls of Bantigue”. Seagulls are the
birds imitated by the people of Bantigue Island in Masbate.
Masbate City is found in the Island of Masbate, which is part of the Bicol Region. The Province of
Masbate is composed of three major islands; Masbate, Ticao, and Burias.
Their major products are copra, aquamarine, cattle, and gold. Another means of their livelihood is
fishing since they live by the seashores of Barangay Bantigue.
DANCE PROPERTIES
What are the needed in dancing Lapay Bantigue?
1. Costume Top: Baro – a plain fine woven corpino top
made from abaca with white undergarment
 Female Bottoms: Saya – monochromatic
color, checkered or striped floor length skirt
with tapis.
 Male Top: Camisa de Chino – any
colored collarless long-sleeved Chinese shirt
Bottoms: Pants – any colored
peasant pants, rolled up below the
knee. No footwear (barefoot)
2. Count: 1, 2 or 1 and 2 to a measure
BASIC DANCE STEPS OR MOVEMENTS
What are the basic steps or movement used in Lantay Bantigue?

 Exaggerated backward bends, with your head nearly touching the ground
 Billing and cooing
 Arms in back stroke motion

Dance Step Number 1:
With your arms extended sideward at shoulder level, step
your R (L) foot forward or sideward (ct.1). then, step your L (R)
close to R (L) (ct. 2). Move your arms up and down together with
your hands from the wrist to simulate the flapping of wings of birds
like flying. 2M
Dance Step Number 2:
Step on the ball of your R (L) foot on the rear leaning backward (ct. 1),
step L ® foot in place (ct. 2); quarter turn right and repeat same three times
more (6 cts.) R (L) arm in reverse “T” position doing kumintang once in every
measure, L ® hand on your waist. 4M
Dance Step Number 3:
Step R (L) forward with a hip-throw sideward. Your knees be
slightly bent (ct. 1) and then, repeat the same with your L ® foot (ct. 2).
Place your R hand wrist on the forehead with palm facing down, fingers
close together, fingertips pointing forward and L hand on your waist. 1M

What is indigenous and ethnic dance?
Indigenous Dance is a dance that distinguished a particular cultural tradition.
Ethnic Dance is a dance that distinguished a particular cultural group and characterized by imitating
the nature and life.
What is an examples of a dance that imitates the movements of a bird?
Kadal Tahu also pronounced as Kadal Tajo/Tahaw is a dance that literally means “the true dance of the
T’boli”. Kadal features a flock of birds (supposedly sisters) that wanders to search for food.

 Female top: black blouse


 Skirt: red nor black tube – skirt worn like a malong
 Props: double sized printed malong

What are the basic steps or movments in Kadal Tahu?

 Slightly bent knees and trunk throughout the dance


 Pulling movement like a lame leg
 Scooping action using malong, simulating big flighty
 Flipping action of wrist simulating small flight
 Turns with a arm either clipped or extended
a. T’boli Agam (R and L)
Knees are slightly bent, hip protruded to the
left, trunk bent sideward to the right and R foot in
third position. Take small jumps with feet flat on the
floor two times (ct. 1, 2)------------------------------- 1M
b. T’boli Turn or Transition (R and L) with the knees slightly bent, ttake two whirl turns in pplace
c. Kadal Stance (R and L)
Bend trunk forward with the knees slightly bent. Take eight jumps in place, twisting the
trunk downward back to the right, then finish it with L shoulder toward the audience (4M);
repeat same reversing the twist (4M)------------------------4M
