Build! Build! Build! The project is a Duterte administration program aimed at restoring the
"Golden Age infrastructure." The program's goal is to increase public infrastructure spending
from an average of 2.9 percent of GDP to around 7.3 percent by the end of the presidency. But,
did this initiative do successfully under his presidency? What changes have occurred as a result
of this project? So far, based on the news, the Build! Build! Build! 29.264 kilometers of roads,
5,950 bridges, 11,340 flood control projects, 222 evacuation centers, 89 Tatag ng Imprastraktura
para sa Kapayapaan at Seguridad (TIKAS) projects, 150,149 classrooms, and 653 COVID-19
facilities were completed as part of the project program (Manila Bulletin. July 21, 2021). This
program had a significant impact on the development of the Philippines. It also allows many
individuals to reach at their location in less time than previously. But what is the issue with
this project?
Many people believe that this project will not assist to reduce traffic on the Edsa because the
Edsa is a major road that serves as a shortcut to several provinces and cities around the
Philippines. Because of the tremendous traffic on Edsa, it was one of the challenges in the
Philippines. The administration builds sky highway for some cars; however, this is a paid
road that’s why it was not helpful especially for those poor Filipinos who has no fund for it.
Since they have no funds, they have no choice but to use the main roads. This situation can
literally explain the social status in many decades, the rich people are always the one who
has privileged than those poor people.
However, if we are going to see the positivity of the Build! Build! Build! project,
we can say that it lessens the people hassles because of the infrastructures that were
improved and build. Let’s take for example the extended LRT-2, as a student living in Rizal,
it will only take me 40 mins to arrive in FEU since the location of the LRT was nearer than
before (Marubeni, 2021). Same with CALAX project wherein the travel time from
CAVITEX to SLEX was reduced by approximately 40 minutes than 90 minutes before
(Road Traffic Technology, June 2017). Base on my personal experience, it lessens our travel
time and we easily reached our destination using the CALAX route. My point is, this project
may not exceed or reach the expectation but the most important thing is the improvement. It
less the hassle of the traffics of the people living in those places.
