1.

What is the purpose of an enlargement of the capillary near the bulb of mercury-inglass
thermometer?
This enlargement in the capillary prevents excess fluid from entering the bulb at
lower temperatures and shortens the distance the fluid must travel when measuring
higher temperatures
2. Explain the function of stirring device in the Thermometer-Comparison Bath.
Stirred liquid baths are by far the most common medium used to perform thermometer
calibration. The bath is provided with a stirring apparatus to ensure uniformity of the
liquid’s temperature.

Stirrer helps in mixing the water so that the temperature of water in the vessel remains
constant throughout. Stirring gives you a more accurate measurement, and that's
because If you don't stir, the heat transfer is limited by natural convection, that is, a film
of cool liquid forms around the end of the thermometer and may give an artificially low
reading.

Stirring disrupts the film and provides much better "forced convection" heat transfer.

It exposes the tip of the thermometer more directly to the fresh layers of bulk fluid.

So stirring helps in mixing the water so that no region remains hotter or colder than the
other regions in a solution
