Noun Phrase

It is a phrase which has a noun as head as head as the most important constituent;
for example. The noun phrase may function as;

i. Object
ii. Complement

As a subject, the room was quite empty

As an object, she is a doctor

May also function as object of preposition

Example: He is in the classroom

Verb phrase

It is the unit that acts as the verb in the clause and comprises of the following;

i. Main verb
ii. Auxiliary verb

Main verb;- has semantic meaning and can convey meaning on its own

Auxiliary verb – occur with the main verb in carrying information for example
mood or modality

Modality

He can sweep the house

Progressive aspect

He is sweeping the house

Past tense

How did he sweep the house?


Question (c)

Adjective phrase

This is a phrase which has adjectives as head and can perform the following;

i. Modifies the noun phrase wherever it occurs in the sentence


Example
I am reading an extremely interesting novel.
ii. Complement in the clause
Example
This milk is quite warm

These are phrases introduced by prepositions.

They functions in the clause as adverbials
