Digital Transformation for SMEs –

How SMEs Can Benefit from
Internet of Things?

James Lai, Chairman

What do these things have in common?
Things in common
• You have all of them in your pocket or hand bag everyday!
• Some are already obsolete or obsoleting along with the
companies who created them
• Those that still exists in the next few years (or more) will have
an embedded microcontroller or a mobile app & will be
connected to the web to create “Internet-of-Things”
Defining the Internet-of-Things (IoT)

•Must be able to CONNECT

•Must COLLECT
•Must COMMUNICATE
IoT vs IIoT (Industry 4.0)
IT & OT Convergence

Information Operational
technology (IT) is the technology (OT) is
application of computers hardware and software
to store, study, retrieve, that detects or causes a
transmit, and manipulate change through the
data, or information, direct monitoring and/or
often in the context of a control of physical
business or other devices, processes and
enterprise. events in the enterprise.

IoT vs Industry 4.0 vs 4IR
• Related ,but not identical
• The term "Industrie 4.0" originates from a project in the high-tech strategy of
the German government, which promotes the computerization of
manufacturing.
• Basic principle is that by connecting machines, work pieces and systems,
businesses are creating intelligent networks along the entire value chain that
can control each other autonomously
• Smart factories, supply chain & logistics, smart infrastructure

The Fourth Industrial Revolution
“We must develop a comprehensive and globally shared view of how
technology is affecting our lives and reshaping our economic, social,
cultural, and human environments. There has never been a time of greater
promise, or greater peril.”

The term "the Internet of things" was coined by Kevin Ashton of

Procter & Gamble, later MIT's Auto-ID Center, in 1999 where
smartphones doesn’t exist yet. Today, we have ubiquitous mobile
connectivity with infrastructure that combines the internet, micro
services, sensors, WiFi , 5G & other wireless technologies (which we
call the “Hypernet”)
