Statement of Purpose

Subject: Application for Masters of Science in Thermal Power – Aerospace Propulsion Option.

I have the pleasure to write this letter to express my profound interest in joining the above mentioned Master’s
program offered at Cranfield University, UK.

Since I was young, my interests were rooted in the concept of flight. As I grew older, science and engineering as my
future profession became apparent to me. Over time, I had deep interest in and was well up to date with modern
technologies related to military and commercial aviation in the form of radars, stealth, manoeuvrability, air to air and
air to ground munitions, beyond & within visual range combat and most importantly, aircraft and missile propulsion. I
was fascinated with the types of propulsion systems for aircrafts and missiles such as turbofans, ramjets and rockets.
Due to my above mentioned interests, I have been an avid follower of military and commercial aerospace for many
years. I heard of Cranfield University back in 2014 when I read about HAL’s partnership with Cranfield. Review of the
offered courses revealed to be very uniquely detailed in the field of aerospace, which made me consider Cranfield
University as a sure plan for my future.

Academic Background
I graduated with a B.E in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) from Heriot Watt University, in November 2015. During
my time at University, I developed an interest in heat exchangers, heat transfer and fluid mechanics.

My final year dissertation was an experimental heat transfer research project titled ‘Investigation into the effect of
Nucleate Boiling on Micro-wires’. This involved experimentally measuring heat transfer coefficients from platinum
micro-wires submerged in a stagnant pool of distilled water and water with surfactant additives. A detailed study of
ten widely used heat transfer coefficient prediction techniques / correlations was also part of the dissertation and the
obtained experimental data was found to be satisfactorily predicted by most of the correlations.

I was also part of a group project involved with the design of a thin walled horizontal pressure vessel in accordance
with ASME section VIII Div. 1. The project was done under the guidance of a leading contracting company based in
Dubai.

This further deepened by interest in heat transfer and prepared me to take up the role of a heat exchanger engineer
which I am today.

Professional Experience
Right after graduation, Sondex (now Danfoss Heating Segment) provided me with the perfect opportunity to enter the
field of heat exchangers.

I began with designing plate heat exchangers for district cooling applications. After a year of experience, I moved
towards designing plate heat exchangers for oil & gas and industry applications such as for methanol plants,
combined cycle power plants and sea water reverse osmosis plants. Industry applications demand pressure vessels to
strictly adhere to ASME and with ‘U’ Stamp certification, thereby providing me with knowledge and experience with
the ASME standards, regulations & limitations, which enables me to take decisions in the Quality Control domain and
formulate the QC plan. I have also been part of a company sponsored course for ASPENTECH, where I received
training in shell & tube heat exchanger design and rating.

I currently manage oil & gas projects for heat exchangers right from the RFQ stages to the shipping and delivery
stages and this involves a wide range of activities that starts from handling the technical bid evaluation, heat
exchanger design, competitive pricing, technical documentation, quality & manufacturing plan, coordinating NDE/NDT
activities and final execution of the project.
Apart from my primary responsibilities mentioned above, I have frequently represented Sondex at international oil &
gas exhibitions namely ADIPEC and Iran Oil Show (2017 & 2018) where I engage in marketing our range of products
for a wide variety of applications and meet prospective clients.

Future Aspirations
Upon completing my under graduation, I have been working for four years as an engineer with a multinational
company. At the workplace, I regularly use AutoCAD for a variety of my job functions. During my time at university, I
was proficient in using CREO Elements / Pro E 3D modelling and have also used ABAQUS CAE. I am currently
familiarising myself with ANSYS Fluent in order to prepare for this course.

My childhood passion for Aerospace has not faded away – it has in fact, strengthened. In the Middle East, where I am
based, there is no scope for research and development in aerospace as there is no manufacturing industry, as it is
more of an industry built on trade.

This also forms an important part of the reason I am choosing to move to the UK. Defence and aerospace companies
that I follow and hope to be a part of upon completing my masters at Cranfield – are all based in the UK.

Due to my strong passion towards aerospace, I wish to dedicate my life to this field. I look forward towards getting
accepted for this course and I am sure that Cranfield University will enable my foundation and further development
within this field. I am also confident that my work experience within the heat transfer industry will prove to be
beneficial while undertaking this course.
