Electromagnetic Spectrum Lesson
Objective:
For students to become familiar with the electromagnetic spectrum and the different types
of light that are emitted by objects in space and can be used by instruments such as telescopes.  

ACTIVITY #1 
Procedure:
1.  Use one of the below pictures, search the web, or the picture on page 613 of the Earth Science textbook as a
reference for your drawing assignment.
2. Using a standard piece of paper, draw the electromagnetic spectrum as you see it best using either of the pictures
given.
Electromagnetic spectrum drawing checklist:
____ Draw the wavelength and label the 6 major different types of light.
____ Label the wavelength scale (show units of measurement)
____ Color the spectrum of visible light
____ Label & DRAW an appropriate space telescope for each type that uses that specific
light 
Ex. Cr.:____ Provide an example of the length of each wavelength (Infrared = width of
your fingernail) 
or Provide an example of the uses of the types of light 
____ Securely attach the completed drawing using tape or glue to your binder or folder.

Procedure:

1.  Go to  https://science.nasa.gov/ems/   2. Click on the links & Read each part of the EMR
Spectrum 

3.  CLOSE READ #1:  Go through each section of light, write down any interesting things you read AND
items you don’t understand. Document this in the chart below:
