Three branches arise from the superior border of the arch of the aorta:
A-Brachiocephalic trunk:
• It is the largest of the three branches and, at its point of origin behind the
manubrium of sternum, is slightly anterior to the other two branches.
• It ascends slightly posteriorly and to the right.
• At the level of the upper edge of the right sternoclavicular joint, the
brachiocephalic trunk divides into:
➢ the right common carotid artery; and
➢ the right subclavian artery.
B- Left common carotid artery:
• Arises from the convex surface of the aortic arch on the left side of
the brachiocephalic artery.
• It runs upward and to the left of the trachea.
• It enters the neck behind the left sternoclavicular joint.
❖ Most blood from the heart wall drains into the right atrium through
the coronary sinus in the posterior part of the atrioventricular
groove:
• great cardiac vein: It opens into the right atrium to the left of the
inferior vena cava.
