1. Advance Answer: It is a physical change, nothing about the chemical composition of the
change.
Intermediate Answer: The paper got smaller.
Novice Answer: Nothing changed.
2. Advance Answer: Boil the water and the salt will remain behind. If you have something
to catch the vapor, you can return it to its original state of water.
Intermediate Answer: Wait for the water to evaporate/leave the pot in the sun.
Novice Answer: Dump out the water.
3. Advance Answer: The chemical composition of the fruit changes over time, and due to
this change an odor starts to occur.
Intermediate Answer: Heat can change the fruit and when fruit is in the sun for too long
it starts to rot, producing a smell.
Novice Answer: The fruit is now rotten.
4. Advance Answer: the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is

Instruction Set 2
Darlene was around the campfire at 5:02 pm when she decided she was hungry. She took out a
package of marshmallows and saw that each marshmallow had a squishy texture, smelled like
sugar, and was white in color. Before toasting each marshmallow, she put each one on a brown
and pointy stick so they would not fall into the fire. As she placed one marshmallow into the fire
she noticed that the marshmallows started to smell like charcoal. Less than a minute later
Darlene saw that her marshmallow caught on fire and turned to a black color.

Directions: Read the passage about Molly’s experiment and write a lab report for her by filling in
the lab report template.
Molly is an 11th grader in Ms. Diamonds class. This week in the lab they are creating the
reaction of substance A with substance B. Molly gathers a 100 mL beaker and first pours in one
cup of substance A. She then pours in one cup of substance B. While she waits for the reaction to
happen Molly writes down the properties of substances A and B. Substance A is a red liquid and
substance B is a blue liquid, both smelling of oranges. She expects that when combined the new
substance C will be purple in color. Looking back at the beaker Molly notices that the color of
the combined A and B substances is yellow and is producing bubbles. Before her eyes the
substance starts to explode out of the beaker and covering Molly entirely making her smell of
shoe polish.

Directions: Read the passage about Raymond’s experiment and write a lab report for her by
filling in the lab report template.
Raymond is a 10th grader in Mr. McCarthy’s chemistry class. This week in the lab they
are discovering if the metal of aluminum is flexible or not. The first thing Raymond does is write
down his observations of aluminum. He notes that aluminum is silver in color, shiny, and he has
a one foot long, flat, square piece. The second thing Raymond does is crush the piece of
aluminum into a ball. The last thing Raymond does to the aluminum is he throws it in the air and
catches it several times. Raymond writes down the new state of his aluminum as it is now only 2
inches big and in the shape of a circle. What happened to his aluminum?
