Step 1: Perform a Sieve Analysis and complete the sieve analysis tables
Step 2: Check the % finer of #200 sieve and determined which material does the soil belong.
Granular Material: 35% or less passing through #200 sieve
Silt-Clay Materials: more than 35% pass through #200 sieve
Step 3: Once the material is determined, identify the % finer of sieve #10,#40 and # 200.
Step 4: Solve for liquid limit and plasticity Index in fraction sieve #40. You might as well conduct
Casagrande liquid limit test for liquid limit and Rolling of soil mass on ground glass plate to
determine plastic limit. Search nalang sa procedure.
Step 5: Using the table below, check which general classification table you will use and perform
elimination. You will arrive with one column then look which type of soil it belongs on the next
row.
Notes:
To evaluate the quality of a soil as a highway subgrade material, one must also incorporate a
number called the group index (GI) with the groups and subgroups of the soil. This index is
written in parentheses after the group or subgroup designation. The group index is given by the
equation
Where
F200 = percentage passing through the No. 200 sieve
LL = liquid limit
PI = plasticity index
The first term of the equation, that is, (F200 - 35)[0.2 + 0.005(LL - 40)] is the partial group index
determined from the liquid limit. The second term, that is, 0.01(F200 - 15)(PI - 10) is the partial
group index determined from the plasticity index.
