SOIL CLASSIFICATION
Two commonly classification system used are:
2
AASHTO Soil Classification
→ Classification procedure standardized by ASTM D3282 and AASHTO
M145.
A1 ~ A3 A4 ~ A7
Using LL and PI separates silty materials Using LL and PI separates silty materials
from clayey materials (only for A2 group) from clayey materials
Example
A-1 (0)
4
GROUP INDEX (GI)
GI → Empirical formula used to further evaluate soils within a
group (subgroups)
where
F200 = percentage passing through the No. 200 sieve
LL = Liquid limit, and PI = Plasticity index
6
AASHTO Particle Size
75 mm No.40
0.425 mm
No.10 No.200
2.0 mm 0.075
mm
7
AASHTO vs USCS
Particle Size Comparison
8
AASHTO Classification Chart
(Coarse-grained Soils)
Note:
First group from the left to fit test data is the correct AASHTO classification.
9
AASHTO Classification Chart
(Fine-grained Soils)
Note:
First group from the left to fit test data is the correct AASHTO classification.
10
AASHTO Plasticity Chart
Range of LL and PI for soils in groups A-2, A-4, A-5, A-6, and A-7.
11
Practice Problem #1
Given data
P10 = 80% P40 = 52% P200 = 20%
Obtained from
LL = 35 PL = 20 PI = 15 gradation curve &
Atterberg Limit tests
12
Practice Problem #1
Given data
P10 = 80% P40 = 52% P200 = 20%
Obtained from
LL = 35 PL = 20 PI = 15 gradation curve &
Atterberg Limit tests
Since, P200 <35%, coarse grained soil
Since, P10 > 50, not A-1-a
Since, P40 > 50, not A-1-b
Since, P200 > 10, not A-3
So must be A-2 soil , use plasticity chart
A-2-6 soil
A-2-6 soil

Practice Problem #2
15
Practice Problem #2
Note:
First group from the left to fit test data is the correct AASHTO classification.
16
Practice Problem #2
A-7-5 soil
17
Practice Problem #2
18
Practice Problem #3
Classify the following soil Using AASHTO System. Given:
% passing No. 10 = 100; GI=3
% passing No. 40 = 80;
% passing No.200 = 58 A-4(3)
LL = 30; PI = 10
