Pedagogy Planning

In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to extract information
from multimodal texts and learn about the international refugee crisis and persuasive writing.

Activity This lesson will prepare students for their persuasive writing assignment
(essay). It is intended to cover an entire 90-minute class period. This activity
will be distributed by slides; there are a total of 20 slides (steps below match the
slide number); 7 are interactive and 6 will be omitted.

1. Title Slide – Ms. Yousef will introduce the lesson by asking students to
define the word asylum. The students will be invited to write their thoughts

on the board. This will also serve as an ungraded bellringer.


2. Quickwrite Slide – After a brief discussion on the students’ bellringer
answers, Ms. Yousef will ask the question displayed on the second slide.
Instead of writing, the students will be invited to share their ideas via an
oral discussion.
3. Learning Objective Slide – Ms. Yousef will paste the SOL standards on
this slide and inform the students of today’s learning goals.
4. YouTube Video Slide – Ms. Yousef will inform students of the video’s
semi-graphic content and explain the video’s content before playing it. The
students will listen and watch attentively.
5. Statistics Slide – This slide will be omitted (repetitive information).
6. Vocabulary Slide – After watching the video, Ms. Yousef will invite
students to the board to drag and drop vocabulary terms to their proper
locations. The students will work together to get the right answers.
7. Answers to Vocabulary Slide – Ms. Yousef will reveal the answers to the
vocabulary slide, then ask students to compare their answer from the
bellringer to the definition displayed on the current slide.
8. (10.5.g) Defining a Refugee Slide – Using the information they learned
from watching the video and the definitions, the students will be invited to
write on the board a few words and ideas that define a refugee. There are
six spaces available, but more boxes can be drawn to accommodate
additional comments.
9. Emigrate vs Immigrate Slide – After a brief oral discussion about the
previous slide, Ms. Yousef will ask students to define emigrate and
immigrate. This will also be done orally.
10. (10.5.g) Push/Pull Slide – After figuring out the meaning of immigrate and
emigrate, Ms. Yousef will divide the class into groups to work on the
current slide. First, the students, as a group, will discuss possible answers
using the information they obtained from watching the video. Then, they
will be invited to the board to either draw or write their thoughts. A brief
discussion will follow.
11. Factors Slide – Ms. Yousef and the class will compare the answers from
the previous slide to the answers on the current slide.
12. Brief Article Slide – Ms. Yousef and the class will read the brief article
together. The students will be invited to the board to underline and
highlight (extract) key information.
13. (10.5.e) Refugee Project Slide – Ms. Yousef will show students the map
that pairs with the article on the previous slides. Students will be invited to
explore the map.
14. Year/Event/Reason Slide – This slide will be omitted (repetitive
information).
15. Opinion Slide – Ms. Yousef will use the Poll feature to distribute an
anonymous poll. The students will answer the opinion question.
16. (10.6.f) Essay Prompt Slide – Ms. Yousef will introduce the prompt for the
students’ persuasive essay. The students will be divided into groups either
persuading against or for the prompt. After ~15-20 minutes, the students
will be invited to the board to write their responses as a one- or two-
sentence thesis statement.
17. Slides 17-20 - These slides will be omitted (stray from learning
objective/goals).
