CHAPTER 1

SURVEYOR’S SOLVER (EXCEL APPLICATION)

INTRODUCTION

Surveying or land surveying is the technique, profession, art, and science of determining

the terrestrial or three-dimensional positions of points and the distances and angles between

them.

A land surveying professional is called a land surveyor. These points are usually on the

surface of the Earth, and they are often used to establish maps and boundaries for ownership,

locations, such as the designed positions of structural components for construction or the surface

location of subsurface features, or other purposes required by government or civil law, such as

property sales.

Surveyors work with elements of geometry, trigonometry, regression analysis, physics,

engineering, metrology, programming languages, and the law. They use equipment, such as total

stations, robotic total stations, theodolites, GNSS receivers, retroreflectors, 3D scanners,

radios, inclinometer, handheld tablets, optical and digital levels, subsurface locators,

drones, GIS, and surveying software.

Surveying has been an element in the development of the human environment since the

beginning of recorded history. The planning and execution of most forms of construction require

it. It is also used in transport, communications, mapping, and the definition of legal boundaries

for land ownership, and is an important tool for research in many other scientific disciplines.

BACKGROUND

This application covers few transportation engineering survey calculation, which are

needful for everyday survey work. The programs included in this application are Intersection

Point Calculator, Bearing Distance Calculator, Three(3) Point Circle (or) Curve -Coordinate and

Radius Calculator, Spiral Curve Calculator,  Area By Coordinate Calculator, and Coordinate by

Triangulation.

To specify, the researchers aim to create the application for instructor to use it in

Surveying class for checking. And the solver or application is highly advised for students taking

Surveying subject not to use it to avoid cheating in quizzes and major exams.

To further discuss about the application, the researchers will be using Visual Basic

application and Excel to create or program the application.

OBJECTIVES

The primary goal of this study is to create application that can be used by Instructor in

Surveying Subject.

The specific sub-objectives are:

1. The Intersection program Calculate intersection coordinate of two given line. We can input 4

points coordinates or 2 points & 2 bearings.

2. Bearing Distance Calculator Program Calculate Rectangular Coordinate <=> Polar. Coordinate

vise versa. This is the surveyor's everyday essential cogo program.

3. The Three Point Curve (3 Point Curve) Program Calculate the center point coordinate and radius

of the curve passing through the 3 given point.

4. The circular curve setting out calculator program Calculate the coordinate of the point within the

group of transition or spiral and circular curve. Local Chainage & Offset <=>

Global Easting & Northing vise-versa. Also this program can give multiple result for

given start chainage an interval within the curve.

5. Area By Coordinate Calculator will calculate the area of any polygon the area with the

given XY co-ordinates. This Area By Coordinate Calculator newly added in our

surveying calculator in version 4.0.

6. Coordinate by Triangulation program helps to calculate the third unknown point

coordinate with 2 known reference point and the distance from the unknown point.

Significant of the Study

This study is conducted to benefit the following:

Student – this study may serve as a guide and reference for the students undertaking the

similar studies.

Professors – this research will aid them their discussions and activity regarding related

lessons. It will be easier for them to find the solution and tackle the related topics about this study.

Future Researcher’s – this research will be useful reference for the researcher who would

make plan to make any related study precisely the standard underlying the Bachelor of Science in Civil

Engineering.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes a review of related literature and studies. Including significant

report of information on past researchers significant on solving surveying problems. Which

greatly helps the researchers in conducting this project study.

Related Literature:

Surveyor Calculator is an application designed to perform the max speed and

productivity in the field of survey.

It allows to calculate areas of a survey but also to create automatically a digital figure of the

survey to share or print in a PDF format.

Why this is a very useful app? This app is very useful because to do these things you need only a

smartphone. You can:

- Triangle, trapezoid, isosceles triangle, rectangle and rectum triangle supported

- Add figures just writing its sides and tapping a side to link with

- Calculate immediately area

- Add figure where you want in the X,Y space or in a specified distance from a point

- Add positive or negative figure internally or externally to another

- Pinch to zoom, double tap to fill the space

- Manage sides, quotes, areas

- Export in PDF with table (if you want) that contains partial and total areas.

HOW TO USE?

Before using the excel file named START

Surveyor’s Solver. The topic or the problem that

you want to solve must within the Engineering

Surveying subject. Let’s find the answer for the

following simple problem.

Problem: A line is recorded as 472.90m

long. It is measured with a 0.65kg. tape which is

30.005m long at 20’C under a 50N pull

supported both ends. During measurement, the

temperature is 5’C and the tape is suspended

under a 75N pull. The line is measured on 3%

grade. E= 200GPa, cross-sectional area of tape

is 3mm2 and the coefficient of linear expansion

is 0.0000116m/’C. In this problem we will find

only the Temperature Correction, our goal is to

see how the Surveyor’s Solver work.
