A Solvent extraction process for the recovery of

citric acid from a fermentation liquor may be safely

used to produce food grade citric acid. The total
feed flowrate of the fermentation liquor is 265 kg/h
and contains 50% citric acid in water, which is to be
extracted using n-octyl alcohol in a counter current
multiple contact extraction unit. The flowrate of
EXERCISE 2 alcohol is 66.5 kg/h and the final raffinate contains
15% citric acid. Determine the composition and
mass flowrate of the leaving extract.
Use scale of fraction 0.1 = 1 cm (0.1:1 cm)
