Literature Review

After carefully reviewing each of the sources that were stated in my Working

Bibliography, I have found five sources that will help answer my research question. This

question being, how does one start a business and how does one operate their business in order to

be successful? Each of the sources I have found will be used to provide insight on various topics

related to business startup, or entrepreneurship, as well as the steps one should take to make his

or her business successful.

The Social Network, an American film directed by David Fincher, covers the story of

Mark Zuckerberg’s business startup of Facebook. In the film, Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse

Eisenberg, is a college student that creates a social networking site, and is later sued for “stealing

the idea” from other students. However, the main focus of this source that I will be using in my

paper is the information about how Mark Zuckerberg started his own business. This is valuable

information to me as it will provide insight relating to how to start a business. Although I am not

interested in creating a social network, this information is still relatable to the general idea of

business startup.

Another source that I will use is a research article created by Peter Guckenbiehl and

Graciela Corral de Zubielqui. This source provides information about how business startup

models must make necessary changes and meet the needs of regulations that COVID-19 has

brought into our world. Although it seems we are moving away from the difficulties COVID-19

has made, it is vital that I understand what needs to be done in order to make my business

successful.

Sinclair’s library assisted me with my next source. The title of the source, “Spring into

action: Experts share what you need to do to start your business and crew off on the right foot

this season” gives one the idea that this source will provide information pertaining to how one

should start their business as well as how to prepare one’s crew, or employees, to make the

business run smoothly and efficiently. More specifically, this article provides information from

landscape management experts. Similar to how I will be using, The Social Network, as a source,

this article will provide information about how one should start their business and prepare one’s

employees when beginning a new business venture.

“How to Start a Business: A Step-by-Step Guide,” by Joshua Stowers, is another source

that will be used to answer my research question. This source will provide guidance to how one

can start a business. This website shares ten steps that will assist one in their startup of their own

business. A few of the steps listed on the site are to refine your idea, write a business plan, and

asses your finances. Also, each of the steps listed has information under it, allowing the reader to

access a vast amount of detail pertaining to how to successfully complete the step in which one is

focused on.

The final source comes from Susan Ward with the topic of “How to Make Your Small

Business More Successful.” This source is directly related to my research question. When

creating a business, one needs to understand how to make their business more successful, or

one’s business will fail. This source provides additional information related to the topic of

business startup as well as steps that one could take to make his or her business more successful.

As one can see, each of these sources will be used to answer my research question in their

own manner. While a few of the sources may not be directly related to the topic, they will

provide insight to different business approaches that I can choose to incorporate into my own or

avoid in my future business. It is necessary that one understands how to start a business before

entering into the competitive business of sport. Using these sources, I will gain credible

information that will be used to answer my research question.
