METHOD STATEMENT FOR

PREDICTION WELD Contract no:

SHRINKAGE ON STRUCTURAL MMC20-5039

1. Scope
a. This document only provide prediction shrinkage on weld joint.
b. Only for transverse shrinkage.
c. Only applicable for PTTEP project ZWATIKA 1D

2. Reference
a. AWS D1.1/D1.1M: 2020 Structural Welding Code
b. Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding [Lincoln Electric Company] by James F
c. Design of Welded Structures by Omer W. Blodgett

3. Definition
Transverse shrinkage as per AWS definition is contractive forces that run perpendicular
to the weld. This type of distorsion occurs parallel to the weld and runs vertically
through the cross section of the weld.

Figure 1 Transverse Shrinkage

For prediction of transverse using formula :
Aw
Ĺ=0,1
t
Where :
Ĺ : Transverse Shrinkage (mm)
Aw : Cross-section of weld (mm2)
t : Thickness of base metal (mm)

5. Conclusion
a. Value transverse shrinkage is for each joint. If there are linear line had more than one
joint then for total shrinkage is added for each joint shrinkage.
Example :
If there are beam girder with 3 splice joint used double vee groove 60 thickness. Then
predicted total shrinkage is :
2,43 x 3 = 7,29 mm.
