Your turn
To summarize the text, I would say that Clover sees a
girl on the other side of the fence that she is not
allowed to go on. Over time, the girl starts to sit on
the fence and one day Clover finds out that her name
is Annie. They become friends and spend the whole
summer sitting together on the fence. Towards the
end of the book, other children come to sit with them
on the fence as well. They all sit in a long line. I really
like this book because it is a great story of friendship.
It also reminds me of what segregation used to be
like. I like how clever the girls were to go around the
rules to be together. Their mothers never said that
they couldn’t go on the fence. I really like reading
Jacqueline Woodson’s stories.
