Identification of Standards
Isabel Barbosa
The international Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) is the creator of the
framework that helps supports our 21st century learners. ISTE standards impact the way our
learners use and learn with technology. This learning is both in the classroom as well as in the
real world in which we live. ISTE standards promote technology expansion and positive methods
for an educator to use to inspire and advance students toward learning and developing in a digital
world. The ISTE standards consist of seven key standards for students:
ISTE standards support learning through a project based learning environment which is
critical for the 21st century learner. This type of learning fosters problem solving skills for all
learners and supports the diverse learner and their learning needs. The purpose of these
standards is to prepare students for every phase they may face in the digital world. When
applying this to the classroom ISTE is setting the stage for creating a digital learning
environment that models and supports the student with all aspects of technology and its constant
changing advancements.
That being said, the Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS) have used the ISTE
standards as a foundation for understanding and developing the current Computer Science K-12
Identification of Standards 3
Elementary Standards for the state of Nevada and the school district within our state. These
standards support our educational systems in adapting to learning in the 21st century. Nevada
students are not just computer users they are creators who will become proficient with the
practices of computer science. The NVACS standards consist of six key standards for students
K-12 my focus will be with the kindergarten standards since this is the grade level my lesson
In reading through the Nevada Academic Content Standards for Computer Science and
Integrated Technology dated August 29, 2019. I notice that there was very little difference
between our state standards and those of International Society for Technology in Education
Standards. The biggest difference is the terminology to helps support our learners with student
K.IC.C.1 - Understand how computing devices have changed people’s lives. (P1.1)K.IC.SI.1 -
Exhibit good digital citizenship using technology safely, responsibly, and ethically. (P2.1)
K.NI.C.1 - Explain that a password helps protect the privacy of information. (P7.3)
K-ESS2-2 - Construct an argument supported by evidence for how plants and animals
(including humans) can change the environment to meet their needs.
K-LS1-1 - Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans)
need to survive.
K-ESS3-1 - Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants or
animals (including humans) and the places they live.
K-ESS3-3 - Communicate solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water,
air, and/or other living things in the local environment.
K-2-ETS1-1 - Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation
people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development
of a new or improved object or tool.
K-2-ETS1-2 - Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape
of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
K-2-ETS1-3 - Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to
compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs.
SEP-1 - Asking Questions and Defining Problems
SEP-2 - Developing and Using Models
SEP-3 - Planning and Carrying Out Investigations
SEP-4 - Analyzing and Interpreting Data
SEP-5 - Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking
SEP-6 - Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
SEP-7 - Engaging in Argument from Evidence
SEP-8 - Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information
CCC-7 - Stability and Change
CCC-6 - Structure and Function
CCC-5 - Energy and Matter: Flows, Cycles, and Conservation
CCC-4 - Systems and System Models
CCC-3 - Scale, Proportion, and Quantity
CCC-2 - Cause and Effect: Mechanism and Explanation
CCC-1 - Patterns
(K)2.1 - Describe observable materials and properties of objects (size, shape, color).
o P.2.A.3 - Students know matter can be categorized by observable properties, such as color,
size, shape, and weight. E/S
o P.2.A.4 - Students know different objects are made of many different types of materials.
E/S
(K)2.2 - Compare objects/products made of different materials.
o P.2.A.4 - Students know different objects are made of many different types of materials.
