Ms. Boudreau’s Classroom

May/June 2022

We are building background knowledge this week for an adventure in the African Savannah!
In Lions at Lunchtime, Jack and Annie will see zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, and lions.

As the weather finally gets warmer, please dress your child in layers. The classroom can get
warm during May and June. Please continue sending in a water bottle with your child that can
be refilled in the classroom sink.

SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITY: Thankful for a Great Year!

Mrs. Pereira and I want to express our heartfelt gratitude for entrusting us with your
children. Thank you for being so supportive and patient as we navigated another different kind
of year. In the end, the incredible teamwork paid off and the children all had a great year! I
can say with confidence that our students will soon be successful First Graders! We will miss
them! Many will give us waves in the hall next year! Please keep in touch so we can celebrate
all the student and family successes. Happy Summer and warm thoughts to a great (and more
normal) school year next year!

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN FUNDATIONS:

Children continue to practice decoding and fluency skills. In addition, we now are
combining comprehension and decoding skills. Once children are efficient decoders, they can
use some of their working memories to think about what they are reading. Comprehension
questions are asked of students after they decode. Reading levels will be assessed and sent to
next year’s teachers! A writing sample will be sent as well. I will continue to assess sight words.
Be sure to keep practicing. End of the year report card assessments and a final DRA
(Developmental Reading Assessment), will be completed by the end of June.
MATH:
During Math, the students are working on how to “decompose” numbers, a highlighted
skill in the Common Core Math standards. Decomposition of numbers is taking a number like 6
and realizing 6 is 0+6, 1+5, 2+4, 3+3, 4+2, 5+1, and 6+0. We will practice decomposing numbers
through ten to help children gain a good understanding of how numbers are related. We are
also working on our addition and subtraction facts through 10! Students should continue
practicing these facts throughout the summer!

IDEAS FOR HOME:

● Practice measuring distances to common places in your house. For example, how many
kid steps is it from the refrigerator to the sink? How many adult steps? Why is it
different?
● After reading with your child, ask them to retell the story. In addition, ask them
questions like: How do you think (main character) felt at the beginning, middle, and
end? What would happen if (change something in story)? What might happen next?
● Please remember to review sight words and have your child read daily.
