Research Log #_8_ - Solutionary Project 2022

Date: March 20 2022

Name: Samantha Guo
Essential Question: How can we regulate our ecosystems to keep them healthy/clean from invasive
species in water?

Three Points to Prove:

#1: How is the introduction of mangroves affecting Hawaii's environment versus mangroves in other
areas?
#2: Although mangroves help with erosion, it comes at a cost
#3: Mangroves provide shelter the wrong species

Point that this Source Proves: #1: How is the introduction of mangroves affecting Hawaii's
environment versus mangroves in other areas?

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove)

Jurgenne Primavera’s goal to help conserve mangroves began 45 years ago when she visited Leganes,
Iloilo province, as a researcher for the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center.

She said that, “I noted some strange-looking trees along the dikes, giving me an “Aha!” moment. I
suddenly realized that these trees – mangroves, I later found out – were the remains of the forests that
had been clear-cut to build the ponds.” (“Interview with Jurgenne Primavera, the ‘mother of ...”)

In 2008, a UK-based NGO, invited her to be the head of a mangrove project which provided her a
platform for her mangrove advocacy.

She believes that the key factors to restoring the mangroves is “First, science-based protocols. Second,
the political will to implement those protocols. Third, community-based initiatives. And fourth,
international leverage applied to science-based protocols.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

The increase of mangroves are due to those who chose to take on the role of conserving
mangroves. The conservation of mangroves bring great importance to them. Jurgenne Primavera is
one of nay who are devoted to help conserve mangroves.

Then in 2008, a UK-based NGO, invited her to be the head of a mangrove project which provided her
a platform for her mangrove advocacy. She wants the government it helps strengthen national laws
and bills that protect mangroves because she believes that it is weak law enforcement and the lack of
political will keeping mangroves from being conserved more efficiently. She believes that the key
factors to restoring the mangroves is “First, science-based protocols. Second, the political will to
implement those protocols. Third, community-based initiatives. And fourth, international leverage
applied to science-based protocols.” By implementing these thing she believes that this will help
restore the mangroves which will help with the economy. The youth can participate in restoring
mangroves by volunteering to plant mangroves and build awareness. With the help of technology, thy
can monitor the survival of the planted mangroves as well as locating the abandoned fishponds so they
can turn it into a mangrove forest.

In the end there are people like Jurgenne Primavera who is striving to restore mangroves in her area.
She is similar to those in Hawaii that is working on spreading awareness about the destruction
mangroves cause in Hawaii.
