Research Log # 4- Solutionary Project 2022

Date: Feb. 23, 2022

Name: Samantha Guo

Essential Question: How can we regulate our ecosystems to keep them healthy/clean from invasive

species in water?

Three Points to Prove:

#1: How is the introduction of mangroves affecting Hawaii's environment verses mangroves in other

areas.

#2: Although mangroves help with erosion, it comes at a cost

#3: Mangroves provide shelter the wrong species

Point that this Source Proves: # 1. How is the introduction of mangroves affecting Hawaii's

environment versesversus mangroves in other areas.areas?

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove)

- Angeli Gaberiel says “invasive species grow rapidly, consuming, adapting, they conquer.

Jeopardizing local economies, threatening human health, and devastating entire ecosystems.”

- Angeli Gaberiel states that, “the introduction of invasive species is often associated with human

activity.”

- Angeli Gaberiel clears up the misconception that only animals can be invasive species by stating

that ,that, “things like bacteria, fuingi and plants can also be invasive
- Angeli Gaberiel says that, “because of the impact on human health, ecosystems, and infrastructure,

invasive species cost the global economy over a trillion dollars each year.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This documentary by national geographic helps supports the point that the introduction of mangroves

affecting Hawaii's environment verses mangroves in other areas because it tells us how the species stays in

control in its native environment versus it thriving and growing uncontrollably in a new environmenta

pristine environment. Through this documentary we learn about how invasive species affectsaffect our

economy, how they are introduced, and how they impact local communities.

Angeli Gaberiel saysays invasive species grow rapidly, consuming, and eventually conquering the

environment which jeopardized the local economy's, threatening human health, and devastating entire

ecosystems. To prevent the invasive species from destroying the native species, they must take many

precautions to save the species from extinction. Whenever a new species is introduced to a new area, they

can cause considerable damage because these species compete with the native wildlife for resources.

National geographic states that, “the introduction of invasive species is often associated with human

activity.” For example, boats that travel between different places may carry some hitchhikers, such as the

zebra mussels. The zebra mussels are one of the most notorious invasive species in the United States. This

species reproduces rapidly, and they must attach itself to a hard object to live. They attach themselves to

pipes which clogsclog them, and they alter food webs and change water chemistry, harming native fish

plants and other aquatic life. Animals are not the only thing that can be invasive. Many people think that only

animals can be invasive species but in fact, things like bacteria, fungi and plants can also be invasive. With

all these invasive species being introduced to the ecosystems, it takes great effortsearnest efforts to remove

them. According to globala global estimate in 2015, it costs about $1.4 trillion each year to restore the

damages the invasive species caused onto the environment!

To help limit the accidental introduction of invasive species, the best thing we can do is to take

measures to prevent the possibility of non-native species from spreading. We can do this by not releasing

exotic pets into the wild, cleaning surfaces off after hiking or going on a boat ride and planting native species

in your garden. If we stick to taking precautions, we can improve the population of our native species and

prevent any non-native species from intrudingintruding into our ecosystem.
