The GBC acts as the interface between administration and the student body by taking the ideas of today to build the school of tomorrow.
With the passion, drive and determination of the faculty to build one of the best MBA experiences in North America we strive to challenge

continues well beyond graduation. With the strength and support of our alumni network we are constantly on the leading edge of current
trends in the business world. One of the GBC’s mandates is to help strengthen the bond between incoming students and outgoing graduates
and the key to our success is the strength of our classmates. Join Rotman, get involved and don’t miss the opportunity to be a part of the

Business Design Club (BDC)

http://www.rotman.utoronto.ca/rbdc/

Membership Fee: $120 (Program Fee) $80 (Annual Fee)

4
If you’re interested in using design thinking, strategy and innovation to solve business problems, then the BDC is the club for you. We are
inspiring the next generation of business designers to tackle business problems of the future. Our mission is to help students develop a new
lens and network, so that they are equipped to bring business design to their profession.

We cater our events to all students – regardless of their previous experience or knowledge with business design, with the belief that everyone
can adopt the business design mindset in the way that is most appropriate for their personal career ambitions. Our events are based on our key
business design personas (we hope you see yourself in them!):

- Ninja: This person lives and breathes business design. They are deep in the weeds with the different methodologies, have experience with
ethnographic interviewing and have their sites set on a role which allows them to use business design on a daily basis.

- Translator: This person is familiar with the concepts and understands the tools that they can use strategically in their future. They
understand how the different exercises fit together in a sprint but want to practice surfacing some unexpected needs and how to manage
stakeholders through ideation and prototyping.

- Explorer: This person has heard that business design is a big thing at Rotman and wants to know more. They may be new to the concepts
but have a curiosity to see what they could learn and how they could borrow it for the occasional project or task.

Event Title Event Description

Kick off Party WTF is Business Design? We feel you… We had all these questions last year and didn't see how this
mindset laddered into career opportunities. The kick off will give you a whistle stop tour of the
major concepts and opportunities and signpost how you learn more over your next two years.

Salons Do you know a thing or two about the details of the design methodologies? Then this is an event for
you! Our Ninjas will love the opportunity to have deeper conversations with industry professionals.
This is not a networking event, it's a chance to explore each others’ minds and think deeply about a
subject everyone in the room is passionate about (although, if you make a good connection, we
salute you). Come prepared to think and debate but also to listen and learn so we can all leave the
room smarter than when we went in.

Co-hosted by the Rotman Career Centre, this presentation and panel teaches members about the
many career paths and real-world applications of design thinking.
Pathways in Design Thinking
Toronto Design Treks Led by industry professionals, these office tours offer an insider’s look of companies using design
thinking.

Applying & Interviewing for Careers in Don't forget about your portfolio! This one is for the Ninjas who will need this for full time and
Business Design internship applications or if you are a curious Translator and want to make sure you have the
examples you will need should you decide to apply. It's a chance to ask your questions, learn the
basics and kick start the focus now that your resume is done and dusted.

Industry Night Eagerly anticipated throughout the industry, this event is an opportunity to network with a wide
range of companies in a fun setting. It's about becoming part of the Business Design community
without any circles of death. Definitely an event not to be missed.

I Know What You Did Last Summer Ever wondered what Business Design might mean from a career perspective? We certainly did.
We’ve assembled a selection of second year students who used business design principles in
different ways in their internships. This is designed to prepare you lest design thinking pop up
unexpectedly (as it did for some people this year!) as well as to showcase how some students
intentionally built their summer around making this toolkit a mindset. This event will have
something for everyone, the Ninjas, Translators and Explorers amongst us (see the BDC website to
understand more). Come with your best questions and we look forward to sharing our summer
stories.

Portfolio Speed Dating Now that you've pulled together a portfolio you might be at a bit of a loss to know if it’s up to
scratch and what improvements to make. I’m sure you've already checked it against a few people but
this will be an invaluable chance to get rapid fire feedback. We have invited a selection of industry
experts who have volunteered to rotate through this session and give 10 minutes of feedback. These
5
are the people who will be reviewing your portfolio when you apply so don’t miss this chance to
have a dry run. This event is aimed at Ninjas for whom applications are a live concern and will be
particularly useful for second years.

Design X The show stopper BDC event has arrived. Think of this as the most fun networking session in your
calendar and a chance to understand the career opportunities in Business Design. You’ll be able to
see the variety of career paths and opportunities for both Ninjas and Translators. There will be pure
play service design agencies, large companies with deep design thinking expertise and organisations
you would never have expected to be heroing the toolkit.

Rotman Design Challenge (RDC) Don't miss the largest business design case competition in the world! It's a great chance to jump start
your understanding of the design methodology if you are a Translator or Explorer while our Ninjas
can hone their expertise in a live client example. This is a fantastic portfolio piece and an
opportunity to wrap your heads around an unusual industry.
