End Semester Assessment, Odd Semester 2021-22

Max. Marks: 35
Note:
1. Attempt all the questions. Each carries equal weightage.
2. Free Body Diagrams are must and no weightage will be given to the equations written directly without F.B.D.
3. Only hand written and scanned solutions will be accepted.
4. Write your Roll number, name and put your signature on each page.
5. Use the same pen for writing your details and making solution.
6. Solution will not be accepted if S. No. 4 and 5 above are not complied.
7. Do not share your solution with anybody else. Remember, Grading is relative.
8. Try to make your solutions unique.
9. Though every problem has only one correct solution even then you can make it unique in terms of writing
sentences, use of different labels etc.

1. Find the Supporting forces at E and F. Pulleys A and B offer no rotational resistance from
friction at the bearings.

2. Determine the force in each of the members located to the left of FG for the scissors
roof truss shown. State whether each member is in tension or compression.
3. What will ensue if the weights are released from a state of rest? Examine all the
possibilities to justify your result.

4. Cylinders A and B have semi-circular cross-sections. A rectangular solid shown as C is firmly

supported by cylinder A. If ρA = 1,600 kg/m3 and ρC = 800 kg/m3, ascertain whether the
arrangement shown is in stable equilibrium.

5. It is known that for a given area Iy  48  106 mm4 and Ixy  –20  106 mm4, where the
x and y axes are rectangular centroidal axes. If the axis corresponding to the maximum
product of inertia makes an angle 67.5 counter-clockwise with the x-axis, use Mohr’s
circle to determine (a) the moment of inertia Ix of the area, (b) the principal centroidal
moments of inertia.
