Instructions:
1. Submit legible hand written assignment on foolscap A4 size pages as single pdf- named with your roll no. and name.
2. Write your name; roll no., subject name and code at top of the assignment.
3. Assume suitable data wherever essential and mention it clearly.
4. Writing appropriate units, nomenclature, and drawing neat sketches/schematics wherever required is an integral part
of the answer.

Part-A
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS (5 x 4 Marks = 20 Marks)
Question
Description Marks

Que-1 Draw the Mohr’s circle for the state of pure shear in a strained body and mark all 04
salient points in it.
Que-2 What are the advantages of Macauley’s method over other methods for the 04
calculation of slope and deflection?
Que-3 A steel bar 20 mm in diameter, 2 m long is subjected to an axial pull of 50 kN. If E 04
= 2 x 105 N/mm2 and m =3. Calculate the change in the (1) length, (2) diameter and
(3) volume.
Que-4 Find the dimensions of a timber joint, span 4 m to carry a brick wall 230 mm thick 04
and 3 m high if the unit weight of brickwork is 20 kN/m3. Permissible bending
stress in timber is 10 MPa. The depth of the joint is twice the width.
Que-5 What do you mean by principal planes and principal stresses? Derive the 04
expression for principal stresses for a body subjected to direct and shear stresses.
Part-B
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS (3 x 10 Marks = 30 Marks)

Que-1 A simple beam AB is loaded by two segments of uniform load and two horizontal 10
forces acting at the ends of a vertical arm. Draw the shear-force and bending
moment diagrams for this beam.

Que-2 A small dam of height h = 2.0 m is constructed of vertical wood beams AB of 10
thickness t = 120 mm, as shown in the figure. Consider the beams to be simply
supported at the top and bottom. Determine the maximum bending stress in the
beams, assuming that the weight density of water is g =9.81 kN.m3.

Fig. 3

Que-3 The horizontal beam ABC shown in the figure is supported by columns BD and 10
CE. The beam is prevented from moving horizontally by the pin support at end A.
Each column is pinned at its upper end to the beam, but at the lower ends, support
D is a guided support and support E is pinned. Both columns are solid steel bars of
square cross section with width equal to 16 mm. A load Q acts at distance a from
column BD.
(a) If the distance, what is the critical value Qcr of the load?
(b) If the distance a can be varied between 0 and 1.0 m, what is the maximum
possible value of Qcr? What is the corresponding value of the distance a?
