Strength of Materials (CEng 102) Mid-Exam for Civil &Water Resources Engineering Students

Academic Year: 1998/2005 -06 04 Jun, 2006 Maximum Total mark 100%
Note: Attempt All Questions Time allowed: 3 hrs.

1) A rod ABCD made of three different cross-sections of the same material is under the influence of
axial load P=50kN and temperature increase of 30 °C. If the material has coefficient of linear

expansion =14*10 /°C, and other characters tics below, calculate
a) The support reactions at A and D
b) The axial stresses at sections x-x and y-y. Use: A1=600 mm² , E =200Gpa,
A2 =1200 mm²  =14*10 /°c,
A3 =1800 mm² ∆T=30°C

2) a. What percentage of strength of a circular solid torsional shaft of diameter d is lost by boring a
hole of diameter 0.65d? Compare the strength and the weight ratio of the two cases.

b. A non-prismatic circular bar AB is loaded by different torques as shown in the figure. What
length x of a hole should be drilled from the left support so that the angle of twist at the free end
B of the bar is zero?

3. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the loading condition on the beam
shown below, and determine the maximum shear force and bending moment. (The 10kN force is
applied at the centroid of the cross-section.)

4. If the beam in Q 3 has a channel cross section as shown in the figure below, calculate
a) The maximum tensile and compressive stresses at the section of maximum
bending moment.
b) The maximum and minimum shear stresses in the web of the channel at the section of
maximum shear force
