Strength of Materials Mid-term Examination for 2nd year CED ext students

Academic Year: 2000/2007 -08 Maximum Total mark 100%

Note: Attempt All Questions Time allowed: 3 hrs.
1) A rod ABC made of two different cross-sections of different materials is under
the influence of two axial loads.
a. Calculate total change in length for the rod……………………( 15 %)
b. And find the final position of B from A………………………( 10%)
Use: A1=600 mm², E steel =200Gpa,
A2 =1200 mm², E Aluminum =70Gpa.

2) A non-prismatic circular bar AB is loaded by different torques as shown in the

figure. What length x of a hole should be drilled from the left support so that the
angle of twist at the free end B of the bar is zero?................................ (25 %)

3) Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the beam AB for the
loading condition on the beam shown below, and determine the maximum shear

force and bending moment. (The 12kN force is applied at the centroid of the
cross-section.)

4) An overhanging beam ABC has rectangular cross-section with width b and height
h. Knowing that the maximum stress (principal stress) at point D is 1 = 35
MPa, determine
i. The magnitude of load P
ii. The maximum shear stress at D
Use L=2m, b=50mm, h=200mm, and d=75mm……………25%

Bonus:- A prismatic bar is loaded as shown in the figure below has permanent
deformation. Can we use (PL/AE) to calculate the total change in length? Why?
…………………………………………………….. (3.0 Points)

Good Luck!!!
