FACULITY OF ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
Strength of Materials Final Exam
Academic Year: 2000/2007 -08 3, july.2008 Maximum Total mark 50%
Note: Attempt All the Questions Time allowed: 3 hrs

1. A Non-prismatic AB is fixed at the two ends. What will be the position of D after the
application of a load P=20KN. Where d1= 40mm and d2= 80mm
L= 10m and E=200Gpa (10)

2. A bar ABC that is fixed at both ends is subject to a torque T at section B. The bar has
a solid, circular cross section (diameter =d1) from A to B and a hollow, circular cross
section (outer diameter d2, inner diameter= d1) from B to C .Drive an expression for
the ratio a/L such that the reactive torques at A and C are equal numerically. (10)

3. A simple beam AB supports a uniformly distributed load of intensity q as shown
below. A support C at the mid point of the beam is positioned at distance d from the
beam before the loads are applied. Assuming that d=10mm, L=6m, E=200Gpa and I=
164 * 106 mm4, calculate the magnitude of the intensity of the load q so that the beam
just touches the support at C (10)

4. In the structure with the given loads shown, support C settles 0.012 m down ward.
Assuming that EI= 700000 KN m2 , Determine all reactions and draw SFD & BMD.
