Write your name and ID number on each page of your Answer Sheets.

You must write the examination only by yourself.

The last page of your answer sheet must contain
(i) a scanned image of your University ID and
(ii) the following declaration with your signature underneath.

By placing my signature on this document, I do hereby solemnly swear that I did

not obtain any type of assistance from anybody or source in answering the
questions of this examination and that I will destroy all forms (electronic or
otherwise) of the examination QUESTION paper immediately after uploading my
answers to Moodle. However, I will retain ALL my original ANSWER sheets.

Briefly explain/justify solution steps. State Assumptions and draw clear and
accurate free-body diagrams when appropriate. (all these carry marks)

It is very important to provide reasons and justifications when appropriate, to

statements you make. Reasons and Justifications carry marks.
When appropriate, you may use point form in answering questions.
Answers must be your own.
All steps must be clearly written to obtain full marks. Page 2/4

Question 1 (7 marks)

The figure below shows a bar of uniform and circular cross-section and diameter 2d
with rigid supports at A and D at a fixed distance 2L. Two external loads F/2 act at
midpoints as shown in red arrows. The bar has a hole of diameter d and length a (>
L) as shown. The young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of the material are E and v,
respectively.

a, d, L and F are given. E and v are also given.

(a) Write equations to obtain support reactions at A and D in terms of given quantities.

(b) Write an expression to obtain the displacement at midpoint B.

Question 2 (8 marks)

For the uniform beam pin jointed at A. The end B is held horizontal (but can move
vertically) by only a Moment M as shown. E, I, (usual notation) length L and the load
P are given.

(a) Use method of integration (discussed in class) to obtain expressions (with arbitrary
constants) for the elastic curve in the two spans.

(b) Write conditions to obtain the arbitrary constants in the expressions for elastic curve
in the two spans (in terms of given P, L, etc. ).

(c) Obtain arbitrary constants.

Question 3 (10 marks)

In the Figure shown below, in the Beam AB, A is a smooth pin joint and B is on a
smooth roller. The beam carries a concentrated external load F and an external
moment FL/4 as shown in the diagram.

(a) Use Free Body diagrams to obtain expressions for SF and BM on vertical
sections at distance x from A in terms of given information F, L etc. and

(b) As, discussed in the class, use the expressions you have obtained in (a) for SF
and BM, and relationships among load, SF and BM, to sketch SF and BM
diagrams (approximate shape only) for the Beam.

Question 4 (10 marks)

(i) In the figure shown, Bending Moment M = 80 Nm and

Vertical Shear Force, V, is 50 kN

M = 80 Nm
V = 50 kN

(a) Determine the Neutral Axis from the topmost edge of the section.

(b) If the neutral axis is 20 mm from the topmost edge, determine the second moment of
area needed to calculate transverse shear stresses and Bending Stresses on the
section.

(c) If the second moment of area calculated in (b) is 0.3600*10-5 m4, and assuming the
Neutral Axis location given in (b), determine the maximum compressive stress and
maximum tensile stress due to bending. What is the bending stress at point C ?

(d) If the second moment of area calculated in (b) is 0.3600*10-5 m4, and assuming the
Neutral Axis location given in (b), determine transverse shear stresses at B and C.
What is the maximum transverse shear stress on the section?

(e) Sketch y vs transverse shear stress (without using numerical values for shear
stress) for the section. (i.e., a Qualitative sketch)

(ii) Will the maximum transverse shear stress for any given section always occur at the
Neutral Axis? Very briefly explain and justify your answer.
