Question One

Room Calculation Room Calculation

Kitchen Bedroom #1

Area =Length x Width 13x 13 =169 sqft.

20x13 = 260

The Trapezial End

1/2 (a+b) xh

½ (14 + 10) x 6

= 72

Total Area, (72 + 260) = 332 Square Feet

Master Bedroom Bedroom #2

13 x 14 = 182 sqft. 13 x 13 = 169 sqft.

Master Bathroom Small Bathroom

13 x 5 = 65 sqft. 8 x 4 = 32 sqft.

Question Two

2 a.

Because of the limited budget, I choose to replace the flooring of the two smaller

bedrooms. A bedroom is one of the most essential areas in the building and therefore they need

to be updated. Similarly, the bedrooms are just next and close to each other and therefore it may

be easier to floor them before focusing on the other options. I would be better to update two

rooms with a smaller combined area of (338 sqft) than a one larger room of area 262 sqft. For

now, it is cost effective to go for the two rooms first and also it is good to start from the one end

of the building.

2 b.

I prefer hardwood over carpet and tiles from Home Depot. The cost of flooring is $ 4.59

per square foot. For my flooring, I chose hardwood since I felt it is more durable and looks very

attractive from any room. Further, hardwood is quicker and easier to install as compared to tiles.

A carpet is cheap but very delicate since it never lasts for long.

2 c.

The flooring from Home Depot is expressed in square footage. I will require a flooring of

169 sqft. for each of the rooms. Therefore, I will be requiring a total of 338 sqft. of hardwood for

the floor. The cost of the hardwood is $ 4.59 per square foot. The total cost for updating the room
will be (338 sqft. x $ 4.59) = $ 1, 551. 42. The net cost for updating the room’s floor is $

1,551.42.

2 d.

Depending on if I will opt to carry out the installation on my own or contract the services of

an installer, both options will cost extra amount. I would require to purchase the right tools and

equipment to install my two bedrooms flooring. Assuming that I opt to contract someone to do

the work for me, I will be pushed to pay extra for the service. According to the website of Home

Depot, a charge of $ 3.58 is charged for every square foot in services in installing the hardwood

floor. Therefore, the charge for hiring would be, $ 3.58 x 338 sqft. = $ 1,210.04. The net cost of

flooring would then be $ 2,761.46. This leaves an excess of $ 738.54 in my budget. The

remaining amount would be used for upgrades and decorations in the tow bedrooms. For

instance, I would opt to use the balance to purchase new furniture and repaint the bedroom walls.

Question Three

3 a.

To cubic feet will be calculated by taking, length x depth x width. The length is the

extended wall of the two bedrooms, 1 and 2. To find the total length of the two bedrooms, we

sum up the individual lengths of each bedroom wall. Thereby, the total length will be (13 + 13) =

26 feet. The depth is given in inches and therefore, I would translate it to feet, 5 inches equals to

5/12 feet. Therefore, cubic feet = Width (3) x Length (26) x Depth (5/12) = 32.5 Cubic feet.

3 b.

1 cubic yard is equivalent to 27 cubic feet. To calculate the cubic yards I would require, I

would take 32.5 cubic feet divided by 27. 32.5 cubic feet/ 27 = 1.20 yards. Since the cubic yards
must be expressed in full, I will round up the 1.20 to 2 cubic yards. The total cost per yard is

given as $40, the net cost for the mulch will be, 2 x 40 = $ 80.
