WHAT IS IT, p. 4

A. NUMBERS
The product of two consecutive
positive integers is 132.
Find the two integers.
Consecutive means one after another, such as
7 and 8 are consecutive positive integers,
4 and 6 are consecutive even integers,
5 and 7 are consecutive odd integers.
NOTE:
To represent consecutive even or odd
integers, we use:
𝒙 st
= 1 even/odd integer and
nd
𝒙 + 𝟐 = 2 even/odd integer

B.RECTANGLES
1. The width of the rectangle is
3 less than the length.
If the area is 40 square inches,
what are the dimensions?
Area = a measure of the size of any
plane surface.
Area is usually measured in square units,
e.g. square centimeters, square meters.
NOTE:
Do not forget to indicate the unit
of measurement in your final
answers.

B.RECTANGLES
2. The area of a rectangular field
2
is 168 𝑚 and its perimeter is
52 𝑚. What are its dimensions?
PERIMETER – the length of the
boundary of a closed figure

WORK PROBLEMS

Suppose person A takes 4 hours to paint a room and

person B takes 12 hours to paint the same room.

Working together, they could paint the room even

quicker. It turns out they would paint the room in
3 hours together.
This can be reasoned by the following logic:
if person A paints the room in 4 hours,
𝟏
he paints of the room each hour.
𝟒
If person B takes 12 hours to paint the room,
𝟏
he paints 𝟏𝟐 of the room.
So together, each hour they paint
𝟏 𝟏 𝟑 𝟏 𝟒 𝟏
+ 𝟏𝟐 = + = = of the room.
𝟒 𝟏𝟐 𝟏𝟐 𝟏𝟐 𝟑
𝟏
If of the room is completed each hour, it follows that it will take
𝟑
3 hours to complete the entire room.
This pattern is used to solve work problems.
We now have the formula
𝟏 𝟏 𝟏 𝑻 𝑻
+ = 𝒐𝒓 + =𝟏
𝑨 𝑩 𝑻 𝑨 𝑩

where

𝑇 = time working together,

𝐴 = time for person A working alone and
𝐵 = time for person B working alone.
A rational algebraic equation is an equation
containing at least one fraction whose
numerator and denominator are polynomials.
These fractions may be on one or both sides of
the equation. Some examples are:

15+x 3 5 r2 −5 r2 +r+2
x
=6 M−4
+ M+6
=1 r + r2 −1 = r+1

C. WORK PROBLEMS
Benjamin can build a music studio in
10 days less than Miguel can. If they build it
together, it would take them 12 days.
How long would it take each of them
working alone?
