Sec 1 Viva Voce Problem Set Practice

General Instructions: On the day of assessment, Please bring your calculator, pen and writing paper. There will be 2 tables (Preparation Table and Assessment Table) set up for the oral assessment. The total duration for the oral assessment is about 10 minutes (max) per student: 5 minutes at the preparation table and 5 minutes at the assessment table. Preparation table: A question paper will be placed on the table. Do not write anything on the question paper as students will be looking at the same question paper during that interval. Solve the question and write your workings on your writing paper. During that 5 minutes, also think about how you will present your answer verbally to your oral examiner. Assessment table: Students are not allowed to write any further workings on their writing paper. Once the student is at the assessment table, greet the examiner and proceed to describe the problem set. Next, present your solutions verbally to the examiner. Do not simply read off your solution from your writing paper. Keep in mind that this is a conversation, so you have to maintain eye contact with your examiner. At the end of the assessment, proceed to the laptop terminal to do your online feedback. You may leave immediately after submitting your online feedback. Do not loiter around the area. Powerpoint Example A machine is used to mould fishballs of 10 g each from fish paste. How long does it take to mould 30 kg of fishballs if the machine can mould 200 fishballs every minute? Suggested Answer: A machine can make fishballs of MASS 10g each. The machine can mould fishballs at a RATE of 200 fishballs every minute. We need to find the TIME required to mould 30 kg of fish paste into fishballs. Hence, in a minute, the machine can mould 200 x 10g = 2000 g of fish paste. That is equal to 2 kg of fish paste in a minute. Hence to mould 30 kg of fish paste, the machine will need (30 2) minutes = 15 minutes. Therefore, the TIME needed to mould 30 kg of fish paste into fishballs is 15 minutes. 1

Sample Questions and 2 suggested answers Question 1: Madam Tay needs s kg of sugar, (2f + 5) kg of flour and 3b kg of butter to bake 5 cakes. Each kg of sugar costs $1.20, each kg of flour costs $1.50 and each kg of butter costs $6.00. Write an algebraic expression for the: (a) Total amount of ingredients, in kg, required to bake 5 cakes. (b) Total cost of baking the cakes. (c) Total amount of ingredients, in kg, required to bake 3 cakes. Suggested answer: Good morning, Sir/Mdm. In this problem, Mdm Tay is planning to bake a cake. With the information provided in the problem, I need to find an expression for the total amount ingredients required to bake 5 cakes in part (a). (a) Hence, I will find the sum of s kg of suger, (2f + 5) kg of flour and 3b kg of butter. After addition, the total amount of ingredients required to bake 5 cakes is ( s + 2 f + 5 + 3b) kg . (b)
(1.2 s ) +1.5( 2 f + 5) + 6.0(3b) =1.2 s + (1.5 2 f ) + (1.5 5) +18 .0b = $( 1.2 s + 3.0 f + 7.5 +18 .0b)

In order to find the cost of baking the cakes, I need to multiply 1.20 to s, multiply 1.50 to (2f + 5) and multiply 6 to 3b. The cost of ingredients will add up to be $(1.2 s + 3.0 f + 7.5 +18 .0b) . (d) Since I need $(1.2 s + 3.0 f + 7.5 +18 .0b) to bake 5 cakes. The cost of baking 3 cakes will be and 3b.) Thank you. Question 2: Derek bought some egg tarts and buns from a bakery. The number of egg tarts bought is x. The number of buns bought is 5 more than the number of egg tarts. (a) Write down, in terms of x, an expression for the number of buns Derek bought. (b) Each egg tart and bun costs 80 cents and 60 cents respectively. Find, in its simplest form in terms of x, an expression for the total cost of the egg tarts and buns Derek bought. (c) If Derek paid a total of $12.80 for all the egg tarts and buns purchased, find the number of egg tarts and the number buns he bought respectively. Suggested answer: Good morning Sir/Mdm. In this question, I am required to find the number of buns and egg tarts Derek bought from a bakery as well as the total cost of the egg tarts and buns.
3 ( s + 2 f + 5 + 3b) kg . (Three- fifths multiplied to the sum of s, 2f, 5 5

In part (a), the number of buns is 5 more than the number of egg tarts. Therefore, I will add 5 to x, and the number of buns Derek bought will be (x + 5) buns. In part (b), it is stated in the question that each egg tart and each bun costs 80 cents and 60 cents respectively. I will multiply 0.8 to x to get 0.8x and the total cost of egg tarts will be $0.8x. Next, I will multiply 0.6 to the expression (x + 5) to get (0.6x + 3) (0.6x added to 3). The total cost of buns is $ (0.6x + 3). The sum of 0.8x and 0.6x + 3 is 1.4x + 3 (1.4x added to 3). Hence, the total cost of egg tarts and buns is $(1.4x + 3). In part (c), Derek paid a total of $12.80. Since Ive arrived at an expression of $(1.4x + 3) for the total cost, I will equate (1.4x + 3) to 12.80. Next, to solve for x, I will subtract 3 from both sides of the equation. Therefore, 1.4x = 9.8 . To make x the subject, I will divide 1.4 on both sides of the equation, and x = 7. The number of egg tarts and buns Derek bought is 7 and 12 respectively. I added 5 to 7 in order to get 12 buns. Thank you. Question 3: Gina bought 7 skirts at $x each, n skirts at $12 each, (2n + 1) skirts at $15 each and 4 skirts at $3x each.
