Question 1

Five children have 3a, 3b+1, 7c, 15d and 5e number of balls respectively in their boxes. If third one gives
one ball to the first and fifth gives three to each of the second and the fourth, they would all have
exactly the same number of balls. What are the values of a and b?
(Note that, 7a = Multiplication value of the numbers 7 and a)
a)10,11 b)6,9 c)3,2 d)12,10

Answer : c)3,2

Solution :

Let 3a, 3b + 1, 7c, 15d and 5e be the total number of balls possessed by five children respectively.
Given that, 3rd one gives 1 ball to the first
Then the number of balls of 3rd and 1st become 7c - 1 and 3a + 1 respectively.
And fifth gives three balls to each 2nd and 4th
Then the number of balls of 5th, 2nd and 4th becomes 5e - 6, 3b + 4, 15d + 3
Now, they would have exactly same number of balls
i.e., 3a + 1 = 3b + 4 = 7c - 1 = 15d + 3 = 5e - 6

We have to find a and b,

3a + 1 = 3b + 4
3a - 3b = 4 - 1 = 3
3(a - b) = 3
a-b=1
The eqn a - b = 1 gives infinite number of possibilities to a and b.

Therefore, we have to consider all the given options and tick the option which satisfies the equation a -
b = 1.
From option a: a = 10, b = 11 then a - b = -1
From option b: a = 6, b = 9 then a - b = -3
From option c: a = 3 b = 2 then a - b = 1
Since only option c satisfies a - b = 1, the answer is option c where a = 3 and c = 2

Question 2

Five sellers have 7, 3, 11, 13 & 14 number of boxes of ice creams respectively in their shops. Each of
them discovered that every box in their own shop contains exactly same number of ice creams. Further,
if the third seller gives 1 ice cream to the second, first gives 1 to second and the fourth gives four to
fifth, they would all have exactly 284 ice creams. Then the number of ice creams in each box of second
and fifth is:
a)94 & 20 b)70 & 30 c)65 & 34 d)none of these

Answer : a)94 & 20

Solution :

Let a, b, c, d & e be the total number of ice creams of the sellers A, B, C, D & E respectively.

If the third seller gives 1 to the second then the present number of ice creams of C and B is c - 1 and b +
1 respectively.
Similarly, if first gives 1 to second then we have a - 1 and b + 1 + 1
And if fourth gives four to fifth, then we have d - 4 and e + 4.
Now, they all have exactly same number (284) of ice creams,
i.e, a - 1 = b + 2 = c - 1 = d - 4 = e + 4 = 284
b + 2 = 284 & e + 4 = 284
b = 282 & e = 280
i.e., B and E seller has totally 282 and 280 in their shops respectively.

Given that, B , E has 3 and 14 boxes in their shop and each box contains exactly same number of ice
creams.
Then we would have, 3 x X = 282 and 14 x Y = 280.
X = 282/3 = 94 and Y = 280/14 = 20
Therefore second seller has 3 boxes and each contains 94 ice creams.
And, fifth seller has 24 boxes and each contains 20 ice creams.

Hence the answer is 94 and 20.

Question 3

Four friends have 5, 6, 8 and 6 guava trees, respectively in their gardens. Last year, each of them
discovered that every tree in their own garden had exactly the same number of guavas. Further, if the
fourth friend gives 5 guavas to the second, and the first gives two to each of the second and the third,
they would all have exactly the same number of guavas. What were the yields of per tree in the garden
of the first and second?
a)35 & 32 b)31 & 24 c)30 & 25 d)28 & 30

Answer : b)31 & 24

Solution :

Let a, b, c, & d be the total number of guavas yielded per year in A, B, C, & D's garden.
Given that, fourth friend gives 5 guavas to the second
Then we get d - 5 = b + 5
And first gives two to each of the second and the third
Then a - 4 = b + 5 + 2 = c + 2
Finally we have, a - 4 = b + 7 = c + 2 = d - 5

But the question is to find the number of guavas bored per tree in A and B's garden.
We have to consider a - 4 = b + 7
Since the number of trees in A's garden is 5 and that of B's garden is 6.
Let x and y be the number of guavas bored per tree in A & B's garden respectively.
Therefore 5x - 4 = 6y + 7
5x - 6y = 11 ...eqn 1

Substitute the values of x and y from the given options,

option:a, 35 & 32 => 5(35) - 6(32) = 175 - 192 = -17
option:b, 31 & 24 => 5(31) - 6(24) = 155 - 144 = 11
Hence option b satisfies the eqn.

Question 1

There are two liquids. Temperature of Liquid A is originally at 68 degree celcius, starts decreasing at a
rate of 8 degree per minute and liquid B's temperature originally at 8 degree celcius starts increasing at
a rate of 12 degree per minute. In how many minutes both the liquids will be at the same temperature?

a) 10 b) 2 c) 5 d) 3

Answer : d) 3

Solution :

Let the required number of minutes be x.

Liquid A losses 8 degree in every minute.
Therefore, Liquid A's Temperature after x minutes = 68 - 8x ...(1)
And liquid B's temperature increases by 12 degrees every minute.
Therefore, Liquid B's Temperature after x minutes = 8 + 12x ...(2)
After x minutes both will be at the same temperature
i.e., values of eq 1 and 2 will be the same.
i.e, 68 - 8x = 8 + 12x
68 - 8 = (8 + 12)x
60 = 20x
x = 60 / 20 = 3

In 3 minutes both A and B will have the same temperature.

Question 2

The salary of a man doubles every 2 years. Approximately how many years will it take for the salary to
increase from 5000 to above 1,00,000.
a)10 b)8 c)12 d)16

Answer : a)10

Solution :
Given that the initial salary amount is 5000 and it doubles every 2 years..

5,000 x 2 = 10,000
10,000 x 2 = 20,000
20,000 x 2 = 40,000
40,000 x 2 = 80,000
80,000 x 2 = 1,60,000

So, after doubling 5 times the salary comes above 1,00,000.

Since the salary doubled every two years, 5 x 2 = 10 years will be required for the salary to rise above
1,00,000.

Hence the answer is 10.

Question 3

Original population of a village is 50,000. The population is increasing at the rate of 60 per year. A city
having the same population as that of the village has its population decreasing at the rate of 80 per year.
After 10 years, the ratio of the population of the village to that of the city is:

a) 51:12 b) 253:246 c) 501:121 d)53:25

Answer : b) 253:246

Solution :

Given that the initial population of the village and the city is 50,000.

The population of the village is increasing at the rate of 60 per year.

Then, after 10 years the population of the village will be 50,000 + (60 x 10) = 50,000 + 600 = 50600.

The population of the city is decreasing at the rate of 80 per year.

Then, after 10 years the population of the city will be 50,000 - (80 x 10) = 50,000 - 800 = 49,200

Therefore the required ratio is 50600 : 49,200 = 506 : 492 = 253 : 246

Hence the answer is 253 : 246.

Question 1

A can build a wall in 12 days, B can do the same in 16 days and C can do in 24 days. Totally 6 walls are to
be built. 'A' does the work for first 16 days and 'B' continues the work for the next 12 days. How many
days should C work?
a)24 b)48 c)94 d)47
Answer : c)94

Solution:

6 walls to be built.
A can build 1 wall in 12 days.
B can build 1 wall in 16 days.
C can build 1 wall in 24 days.

If A builds for 16 days, he builds = 16/12 walls

If B builds for 12 days, he builds = 12/16 walls

So, remaining work have to be done by C is 6 walls - (16/12 walls + 12/16 walls)

= 6 - 64/48 - 36/48
= 6 - 100/48
= 288/48 - 100/48
= 188/48
= 94/24

Days Taken by C to Complete the work:

work(walls) days

1 24

94/24 ?

Days Taken = 24 x 94/24 = 94 days.

Hence, C should work for 94 days to complete the work.

Question 2

P, Q and R can paint a house in 40, 60 and 120 days respectively. If P is assisted by Q and R on every
fourth day then find the number of days P requires to complete the painting work.

a)32 b)42 c)64 d)63

Answer : a)32

Solution:

P's 1 day work = 1/40

Q's 1 day work = 1/60 and
R's 1 day work = 1/120

P works alone for 3 days and on the 4th day he is accompanied by Q and R.
P's 3 days work = 3/40
(P+Q+R)'s 1 day's work = 1/40 + 1/60 + 1/120 = 6/120

Work done in 4 days = 3/40 + 6/120 = 15/120 = 1/8

Now, 1/8 work done in 4 days.

Work Days

1/8 4

1 ?

Then the whole work done 4 x 8 = 32 days

Hence the answer is 32 days.

Question 3

Mr.A alone can assemble a car in 6 days and Mr.B alone do the same in 8 days. Mr.A & Mr.B undertook a
task of assembling a car for Rs.32000. If they assembled the car in 3 days with the help of Mr.C, then the
amount to be paid to Mr.c is:
a)Rs.7000 b)Rs.8000 c)Rs.6000 d)Rs.4000

Answer : d)Rs.4000

Solution:

Mr.A's 1 day work = 1/6 and Mr.B's 1 day work = 1/8

Mr.A, Mr.B & Mr.C together can assemble the car in 3 days
Then, (Mr.A + Mr.B + Mr.C )'s 1 day work = 1/3
And, Mr.C's 1 day work = (Mr.A + Mr.B + Mr.C )'s 1 day work - (Mr.A's 1 day work + Mr.B's 1 day work) =
1/3 - (1/6 + 1/8) = 1/3 - 7/24 = 1/24

Wages should be proportional to the amount of work completed per day

Therefore,
Mr.A's wages : Mr.B's wages : Mr.C's wages = 1/6 : 1/8 : 1/24 = 4:3:1
Therefore C's share of total wage wil be 1/(4+3+1)

Total wage = Rs. 32000

C's share will be 32000 x 1/(4+3+1)

= 1/8 x 32000 = 4000

Question 1
When Ramakant was born, his father was 28years older than his brother and his mother was 22 years
older than his sister. If Ramakant's brother is 5 years older than Ramakant and his mother is 4 years
younger than his father, how old was Ramakant's sister when Ramakant was born?

a) 7 b) 9 c) 10 d) 12

Answer : a) 7

Solution :

When Ramakant was born his brother was 5 years older

Ramakant’s brother -- 5 years
Ramakant’s father -- 5 + 28 -- 33 years
Ramakant’s mother 33 - 4 = 29 years (4 years younger than Ramakant’s father)
Ramakant’s mother was 22 years older than his sister.
So Ramakant’s sister’s was - 29 - 22 = 7 years.

Question 2

Ramesh was five years old ten years ago. At the time of birth of Ramesh his father Suresh was 22 years
older than his only brother Murugesh who was five years old then. Ramesh’s sister Rashmi is now 12
year old. Ramya, mother of Rashmi is three years younger than her husband. What was Ramya’s age at
the time of birth of Murugesh?

a) 27 b) 19 c) 24 d) none of these.

Answer : b) 19 years.

Solution :

Ramesh was five years old ten years ago.

Ramesh’s present age - 5 + 10 = 15
Murugesh is five years older than Ramesh.
So Murgesh present age - 20
Suresh is 22 years older than Murugesh.
So Suresh’s present age - 20 + 22 = 42
Ramya’s age now -- (42-3) - 39
Rashmi’s present age - 12
Ramya’s age at the time of birth of Murugesh - Ramya's Present Age - Murugesh's Present Age = 39 - 20
= 19

Harshini’s present age - 20

Harishini is 9 years younger than Ishwar Prasad .
Ishwar Prasad’s present age 20 + 9 = 29
Kritty Karma is younger than Ishwar Prasad by 5 years.
So Kritty Karma’s present age - 29-5 = 24 years
Gopal’s present age - 29 + 26 - 55 years
Radha’s present age - 55- 2 - 53 years.

Question 1

Brindavan Express leave Chennai Central Station every day at 07.50 am and goes to Bangalore City
Railway station. This train is very popular among the travellers. On 25th July 2012 number of passengers
travelling by I class and II class was in the ratio 1: 4. The fare for this travel is in the ratio 3:1. The total
fare collected was Rs. 224000/. (Rs. Two lakhs twenty four thousand only). What was the fare collected
from I class passengers on that day?

a) Rs. 96000 b) Rs.32000 c) Rs.128000 d) none of these.

Answer : a) Rs. 96000

Solution :

Let the number of passenger travelling by first class be x.

Then number of passenger travelling by second class will be 4x.
But the fare is in the ratio 3:1
In other words, if 3y fare is collected per I class passenger, y would be collected per II class passenger.
Fares of I class passengers : Fares of II class passengers
= x . 3y : 4x.y
= 3:4
The above ratio can be interpreted as follows.
If total fare is 3+4 = 7, then I class passengers should pay Rs. 3
Similarly, we can calculate the fare of I class passengers when total was 224000
Total Fare I Class Fare

Question 2

Parveen Transports, Chennai are running omni buses to various destinations from Chennai. Their buses
go to Bangalore, Madurai, Coimbatore, Srivilliputhur, Karaikudi, Tenkasi etc. Their competitors includes
SRM Transports, KPN Transport, MAP Transport, SS Transport etc.
Parveen Transport has AC and Non AC buses to Madurai. On a day number of passengers in a AC bus
and Non AC bus to Madurai was in the ratio 3:7.
The fare charged by them was in the ratio AC: Non AC - 5: 3. If the total fare collected from these two
buses on that day worked out to Rs.24192 how much fare was collected from Non-AC bus passengers to
Madurai on that day?

a) Rs. 18112 b) Rs.14112 c) Rs.16112 d) Rs. 17112

Answer : b) Rs. 14112

Solution :

Passengers in AC : Non AC bus --- 3 : 7

Fare in AC: Non AC bus -- 5 : 3
Let us assume 3x passengers travel by AC, then no. of passengers by Non AC bus will be 7x.
If 5y is the fare collected per AC passenger, then 3y would be the fare per Non AC passenger.
Fares of 3x AC passengers : Fares of 7x Non AC passengers
= 3x.5y : 7x.3y
= 15:21
In other words, if total fare collected is 15:21 = 36, then Non AC passengers would had paid 21. Non AC
fare when total fare was Rs. 24192, can be calculated as shown below.

Total Fare Non AC Fare

1) Total number of boys and girls in a class is A. The total number of girls subtracted from the total
number of boys is B. Now please express the portion of girls to the total strength in terms of 'A' and 'B'.

Let x denote the number of boys. Let y denote the number of girls.

A = x + y -> equation 1
B = x - y -> equation 2

Subtracting equation 2 from equation 1 we will get y = (A - B)/2 -> equation 3

Ratio of total number of girls to the total strength will be y / x + y.

Now substituting A for x + y as per equation 1 and (A - B)/2 for y as per equation 3 we will get the
answer as
(A - B)/(2*(A + B))

Placement Question 2

2) Find the ratio of weights of 1 gram of cotton to 1.5 gram of rubber if their densities are in the ratio of
1 : 2.

This is a very simple question. Since the ratio of weights is the question, one need not care about their
densities.

Hence 1 gram of cotton : 1.5 gram of rubber will be in the ratio 1/1.5 = 2/3 (as simple as that :))

Placement Question 3

3) Ravi had got twice as much as marks as Ramu. His teacher had made him a promise that, for every
mark he scores above Ramu, he would be awarded 50% of those marks as bonus. Find the ratio of his
bonus marks to the total marks of Ravi and Ramu.

Lets say Ramu has got x marks.

Then Ravi would had got 2x marks initially. But his teacher has promised a bonus of 50% of marks from
the extra marks he got more than Ravi.

Hence he would be awarded x/2 marks as bonus. Total marks of Ravi = 2x + x/2 = 5x/2.

Total marks of both the students = Total marks of Ramu + Total marks of Ravi
= x + 5x/2 = 7x/2.

Ratio of Ravi's bonus mark to the Total marks of Ravi and Ramu would be (x/2) divided by (7x/2) = 1/7.
