INT. HALL - DAY
1. INT. HALL - DAY
DAVID CHAN (a Senior High School Student, wearing a black
jacket under his school uniform) Is playing the last 5 Bars
of The Beatles song "Twist and Shout" on a Electric Bass and
on the last note David brings the neck of of the Electric
Bass up and the plays the last note bringing the neck of the
Electric Bass down and end the song passionately. The sound
of the song echo's in the hall and the room gets consumed by
silence. After a few seconds. The PERFORMANCE ACCESSOR (the
Head of Music in the High School, wearing a collared shirt
under a jersey, also wearing a flat hat) Claps and cheers for
his performance.
PERFORMANCE ACCESSOR
(clapping)
Woo go David Woo Woo
PERFORMANCE ACCESSOR
You can leave now
David listened to The Performance Accessor and walks off
stage down some stairs on the side of the stage. The
Performance Accessor writes some more notes down and then
looks over and see a list of names of people that are in
Musical Ensembles and The Performance Accessor sees that the
section "Bassist" is empty in the Jazz Ensemble Member List
and asked David.
PERFORMANCE ACCESSOR
(eyes still of the paper)

(looks up)
Davi...
The Door Closes behind David when he walks out. The
Performance Accessor looks at the Jazz ENSEMBLE Member List
again and writes down in the "Bassist" Section "David Chan"

DAVID CHAN
Aw not too bad really just
(lifts his hand that are
shaking)

Oh well you gotta get use to that
when your working in an business,
writing stuff fast, typing fast,
being efficient with your fingers
y'know all that Jazz.
DAVID'S FRIEND 1
Oh yeah working in a business, when
you get your own business you will
be rich and can afford a mansion,
buying a Lamborghini. And health
insurance, oh unless if your going
to live in America then good luck
with that.
DAVID CHAN
Ha OK OK then.
DAVID'S FRIEND 2
Do you guys want to get something

All stop walking
DAVID CHAN
Oh I'm going to the music block, uh
(gets his wallet out and
pulls out a $5)
Could someone buy me a sandwich?
DAVID'S FRIEND 2
(sighs)

David's Friend 2 walks off.
DAVID'S FRIEND 1
(snatch the $5)

3. INT. M5 - LATER
David is in the music room playing "Smoke on the Water" on
bass but is getting it wrong and rages.
CUT TO:
DAVID is on his laptop looking at future office jobs. The
PERFORMANCE ACCESSOR walks passed the door but walks
backwards to see DAVID in the room and knocks on the door.
DAVID CHAN
(tired and fed up)
Yes.
The Performance Accessor opens the door and enters the room
poking his head out asking David.
PERFORMANCE ACCESSOR
Hey David?
David gets startled not thinking it was The Performance
Accessor, immediately folds his laptop lid and spins on his
spinning chair to face almost to The Performance Accessor
David glances at the bottle on his desk and under stress hits
it off his desk and looks back at The Performance Accessor
and confidently smiles at him. The Performance looks beside
David confusion.
PERFORMANCE ACCESSOR
(points beside David)
Why did you
(ignores it)
Anyway, I'm just wondering if you
want to join the Jazz Ensemble as a
Bass Guitarist?
DAVID CHAN
Yeah sure.
PERFORMANCE ACCESSOR
That's great, OK first rehearsal on
Thursday Lunch, I'll let the Jazz
Director know.
The Performance Accessor begins walking out of the room
DAVID CHAN
OK Thanks
The door closes behind The Performance Accessor.

INT. M1 - DAY
4.
4. INT. M1 - DAY
DAVID CHAN, with this Bass Guitar bag in his back is walking
in the hallway trying to find the room where The Jazz
Ensemble is rehearsing and glances twice at the room where
The Jazz Ensemble was rehearsing and went into the room and
all the players are setting up and tuning their instruments.
The JAZZ DIRECTOR is handing out sheet music for the players.
The PIANIST looks at David for a second while he is
preparing. David goes to his station and prepares his Bass
Guitar. When David finished setting up his set-up The Jazz
Director comes to David to place the sheet music on David's
Music Stand. David looks at the sheet music. The Sheet music
is the Bass Guitar Part for the Jazz Standard "All of Me".
David is shocked when seeing the sheet music realizing its
not in Tabs.
CUT TO:
MONTAGE
5. INT. M4 - LATER
- DAVID CHAN goes into a room hastily and takes the Bass
Guitar Bag off his back
CUT TO:
8. INT. M1 - DAY
DAVID CHAN goes into the room confident with his bass bag on
him. He places himself in his station, brings his folder,
places it on the music stand and flips to the transcribed
sheet music of "All of Me".
JAZZ DIRECTOR
(looks around)
OK alright everyone ready, OK
(counts in snapping his
fingers on the off beat)
1, 2
(snaps on 2 and 4)
1, 2, 3, 4
David lift his head and drops down on the first beat.
CUT TO:
9. INT. M3 - LATER
DAVID CHAN comes into the room and calmly places his bag
down. Stands for a second and then celebrates his success.
David plays a 2 5 1 chord progression on the piano. David
goes on the drums and plays a bad double time swing groove
with energy but then goes to a better groove later. David
plays the double bass fast but doesn't sound good but later
sounding better. David improvised some notes on the piano
fast and gets a note wrong and screams. David is fiddling
with the piano keys to create a kind of melody. While doing
this David is also looking through The University of Auckland
website about applying for undergraduate study, David scrolls
down and clicks on "Why study Business?". The PIANIST of the
Jazz Ensemble walks passed the door and walks backward to
hear what David is playing on the piano. The Pianist opens
the door and David gets startled.
PIANIST
Hey is that a tune you're making?
DAVID CHAN

DAVID CHAN
Oh no, no. I was just fiddling with
the keys
(leans on the Piano with
his elbow on the piano and
his hand on his jaw)
Why'd you ask?
PIANIST
Oh it just sounded nice
DAVID CHAN
Oh well you see i actually meant to
say, uh, no..n't
The Pianist looks at David confused
PIANIST
O..kaay then
(ignores it)
Well anyway I think you it would be
nice to play your composition for
the Jazz Band?
DAVID CHAN
Oh really, Uuhh, sure, yeah I'll
try to get it sorted by our next
rehearsal
PIANIST
Aight that sound great, can't wait
to hear it, See yea then
DAVID CHAN
Aight see yea then
The Pianist closes the door. David sits in the Piano chair
and is thinking on what he should make. David stands up.
MONTAGE
- Types on the Windows search bar "mus" and Musescore comes
up and he click it
- Presses the (+) button saying "Create New Score"
- Types "When I Close My Eyes You're Not There" into the
Title in the sheet music in Musescore
- Plays the first 3 notes of the song and tries to find the
4th note, then manages to find the 4th note
- Notates the 4th note on the project
- plays the chord Eb and then goes to Ddim and does a "ooh
nice" face
END OF MONTAGE

The JAZZ DIRECTOR comes to see what is going on

David hesitates

The Pianist grabs the sheet music from David and gives it to
the Jazz Director. The Jazz Director looks at it

Mmm "When I Close My Eyes You're
Not There"
(walks away)

David gets fidgety
