MOVIE ANALYSIS. Identify the elements of the movie. Use the space provided.
1. Characters (List down all the characters in the story and provide a description
about them. You may add or delete the boxes depending on your answers.)
CHARACTERS DESCRIPTION
Virginia Woolf Famous English novelist. Virginia suffers from
headaches and hears voices in her brain. The
Hours is set on a day in 1923 while she was
living in a London suburb. Her family
overprotects her because they fear for her
sanity, despite the fact that she is exceptionally
intelligent and respected. Mrs. Dalloway is her
first novel, which she thinks will be her
masterpiece.

Leonard Woolf Virginia Woolf’s husband. Leonard is the editor

and publisher of the Hogarth Press, and he
believes Virginia to be the most important
writer of her generation. He is occasionally testy
and curmudgeonly, yet he never gets upset with
Virginia, despite his continual worry over her.
When Virginia gets too preoccupied to look after
her own health, he steps in.

Nelly The cook in the Woolf household. Virginia's

detached engagement with the house and its

workings contrasts with Nelly's relentless
domestic life. Her practicality prevents her from
understanding Virginia’s dedication to her
writing. Virginia's lack of interest in her own
home irritates her.

Vanessa Bell Virginia's sister, a well-known artist. Vanessa is

the mother of three children and lives a loud,
colorful, and joyous life. Despite being three
years older than Virginia, she appears to be
younger since she is healthier and more
adjusted. Vanessa is one of Virginia's
caregivers, and the two sisters are quite close.

Julian Vanessa’s oldest child. Julian is fifteen years old

and very handsome. He is Vanessa’s favorite.

Quentin Vanessa’s middle child, age thirteen. Quentin

may not be as attractive as Julian, but he is
nice, dependable, and innately decent. Because
of his brilliance and sense of irony, Virginia has
a soft spot for Quentin.
Angelica Vanessa’s youngest child, age five. Angelica is
nervous and distractible. Her elder brothers
indulge her wishes like the stereotypical
youngest kid.
Ralph One of Leonard’s assistants. Ralph is stout,
earthly, and somewhat incompetent.

Another one of Leonard's assistants. Marjorie

Marjorie
has a grating voice and is prepared to do the
jobs that no one else wants to do, even if she
isn't particularly good at them.

ELEMENTS OF THE PLOT SUMMARY

Exposition The Hours is set in three different places and times:
Richmond, England in the early 1920s where Virginia
Woolf begun writing the book Mrs Dollaway; Los
Angeles, California in the late 1940s which focuses
on the story of Laura brown, a housewife; and,
finally, New York City's West Village at some point in
the 1990s which focuses on the story of Clarissa
Vaughan, a literary editor in New York City.
My LITERATURE LOG_WEEK NO. 4
Rising Action Virginia Woolf observes the dead bird in the garden
and realizes that she feels as though she would like
to die. Clarissa Vaughn pays a visit to Richard, an
old friend dying of AIDS, and receives a visit from
Louis, an old acquaintance she hasn't seen in a long
time, and must reconcile how they have all changed
since their youth. Laura Brown is reading Virginia
Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, and the novel has an effect
on her that prompts her to question her own life in
the course of an average day.
Climax Virginia Woolf gets so dissatisfied with her life in the
suburbs, which she perceives as a form of exile, that
she goes to the train station and attempts to travel
to London without her husband's consent. Leonard
Woolf comes across her and takes her home.
Clarissa Vaughn's best friend, Richard, commits
suicide in her company by jumping out of an open
window, putting an end to her lifelong debate about
whether they should have married. Laura Brown
takes the risky step of leaving her child with a
neighbor, going to a hotel, checking in, and
spending two hours reading Mrs. Dalloway and
contemplating suicide. She decides against suicide,
but she ultimately admits that she is unable of
feeling completely fulfilled as a wife and mother.
Falling Action Leonard is persuaded to return to London by Virginia
Woolf. She concludes that Clarissa Dalloway, the
character she's been constructing, will not commit
suicide. Instead, a doomed, deranged individual will
perish. After Richard's death, Clarissa Vaughn invites
Laura Brown to stay with her. Coming face to face
with Richard's demons in the body of his mother,
who abandoned him, she understands that everyone
goes through life in essentially the same way, and
that value is found in the ordinary. Laura Brown
throws her husband's birthday party and then
considers suicide since she feels so disconnected
from her family and even her own body.
Denouement Virginia commits suicide by drowning with a voice-
over, in which Virginia thanks Leonard for loving
her: "Always the years between us. Always the
years. Always the love. Always the hours."

the movie.

ELEMENTS OF THE PLOT SUMMARY

Exposition
The film opens with young Casey Becker receiving
phone calls from an unidentified caller. At first it
seems as if he has gotten a wrong number, but it
soon becomes clear he is toying with her, and his
voice gets more and more threatening. Casey
becomes frightened when she realizes her caller can
see her. She begins to panic when the caller
threatens to kill her, and forces her to answer movie
trivia in exchange for her life and the life of her
boyfriend, Steve, who she sees tied up on her back
patio. After killing Steve, the caller torments Casey
until finally breaking into the house and chasing her;
he is dressed in a black costume with a white ghost
mask over his face. He chases her across her lawn
just as her parents pull up into the driveway. They
do not see her, and Casey is stabbed in the chest,
unable to scream. After killing Casey, the murderer
strings up her body in the back yard for the parents
to discover.

Rising Action
The next day, Sidney's school is abuzz with news of
the murder, and classes are temporarily cancelled.
Sidney decides that since her father is gone and she
is alone, she is going to stay with her her best friend
Tatum Sidney, Tatum, and BIlly sit with their group
of friends, which includes Randy (who is obsessed
with horror movies, and Stu, a class clown type who
used to date Casey Becker. Sidney goes home to
wait for Tatum to pick her up. The phone rings and
she hears a strange voice, the same one that was

Randy joking around, but the caller turns abusive
and brings up Sidney's mother. "Do you wanna die,
Sidney? Your mother sure didn't!" The killer emerges
from a closet in Sidney's house and a chase starts
through out the house and Sidney locks herself in
her bedroom and dials 911. Then Billy arrives,
climbing through Sidney's window again, and a cell
phone falls out of his pocket. Sidney realizes that it
may have been him phoning her and she runs
downs stairs and out of the house only to be
greeted by the police. She is taken to the police
station along with Billy, where he is questioned. At
the police station, Sidney meets Dewey Tatum's
older brother and the town deputy, who is
considered a dolt. Outside the police station, she is
confronted by nosy reporter Gail Weathers the
writer of an expose about the murder of Sidney's
mother. Gail feels that Cotton Weary was wrongfully
convicted, and now Gail is following up a story about
the murder of Casey Becker; she feels the murders
are connected. Tatum takes Sidney to her house,
where she recieves another phone call from the
killer, who tells her "You got the wrong guy,
Sidney...again." The next day at school, Sidney is
threatened by the killer while she is in the
bathroom, but she escapes.
Climax School is over and a curfew is in place, so the group
of friends decide to throw a party. Gail Weathers
takes a cameraman to the party in an attempt to
talk to Sidney, but Dewey intercepts her. The two of
them talk and seem to have a mutual affection for
one another. They enter the party and Dewey
chooses not to bust the partygoers for underage
drinking. During the party Billy and Sidney go
upstairs and Sidney has sex with him. Meanwhile,
Tatum is murdered in the garage by the killer, who
has infiltrated the party after all. After the interlude
between Sidney and Billy, the door opens and in
walks the killer, who stabs Billy in the back. Another
chase starts. Dewey is stabbed. Gale, in her
newsvan, swerves to avoid hitting Sidney and runs
her car down a hill, striking a tree and appearing to
be killed. Sidney ends up in the house facing Randy
and Stu, both claiming the other is the killer. Stu is
vying to come inside and obtain the gun, while
Randy wants to leave. Eventually Billy stumbles

down the stairs, bloodied, and lets Randy and Stu

into the house, shooting Randy and turning to reveal
that the blood is fake; Billy was only pretending to
be stabbed. He was aided by his accomplice, Stu;
both of them are the killers. Billy also reveals that he
was responsible for killing Sidney's mother, who had
an affair with his father. Billy blamed Mrs. Prescott
for the dissolution of his parents' marriage, and
murdered Mrs. Prescott out of revenge. Billy and Stu
also reveal that they have kidnapped Mr. Prescott,
who is tied up in a closet. They have framed Mr.
Prescott for the murders, and intend to wound
themselves to make it look as if Mr. Prescott
attacked them, at which point they will kill both him
and Sidney.

Falling Action Billy and Stu inflict flesh wounds on one another
with the knife, but they are interrupted by Gail
Weathers, who returns, armed with Dewey's gun.
Gail forgets to switch off the gun's safety, and a
struggle ensues. Sidney strikes back at her
tormenters, killing Stu with a television and shooting
Billy in the head with the gun.

Denouement

Dewey is revealed to be alive, as is Randy. All ends

well as Gale reports that the Macher house has been
the scene of what seemed to be some real-life scary
movie.

of like fiction that knows it’s a story being told and comments on itself in the telling.
It can be accomplished through subtle characterization, dialogue, or it can be
blatant, as in Scream in the scene where the two guys are in the video store talking
about horror movies:
Randy: The police are always off track with this shit! If they'd watch Prom Night,
they'd save time! There's a formula to it. A very simple formula! [yelling in video
store] Randy: EVERYBODY'S A SUSPECT!

Here’s just a few more lines that show the film’s self-awareness:
TATUM: “No, please don’t kill me, Mr. Ghostface…I want to be in the sequel.”
BILLY: “Now, Sid, don’t you blame the movies. Movies don’t create psychos. Movies
make psychos more creative!”
When BILLY licks the blood from his finger: “Umm…corn syrup. The same stuff they
used for blood in Carrie.”
Phone Voice: Do you like scary movies?
Sidney Prescott: What's the point? They're all the same. Some stupid killer stalking
some big-breasted girl who can't act who is always running up the stairs when she
should be running out the front door. It's insulting.

idea how to dock the little shuttle with the

Endurance (the main spaceship), he produces an
explosion, severely damaging the spacecraft and
knocking it out of orbit. Cooper docks his shuttle
with the Endurance and pushes it back into orbit
while it is spinning out of control. He and Brand
determine that sling-shotting around the
Gargantuan is the best way to get to the last planet.
They decide to detach the superfluous shuttles while
they're at it, which will save them fuel. Cooper,
however, admits that they never had enough fuel
for all of them throughout the maneuver and
detaches himself from the other shuttle. In a frantic
attempt to witness the singularity at the black hole's
heart so that he can collect data and bring it back to
Earth, he pilots his vessel into it.
Climax Cooper's shuttle is wrecked inside the wormhole,
forcing him to eject. He wanders through blackness
at first, but soon emerges within a tesseract built by
the beings who created the wormhole. Cooper tries
to utilize the tesseract to interact with Murphy's
bedroom across space and time to avoid the events
of their mission by inducing himself not to go, but
he fails.
Falling Action Cooper finally discovers that he can send the black
hole's quantum data to Murphy by generating a
gravitational anomaly that encodes a message with
the second hand of the watch he gave Murphy
before he left. Murphy deciphers the message and
solves "the problem of gravity," allowing her to save
humanity from the planet and establish a new home
in space. Cooper is left floating in space when the
tesseract explodes around him.

Denouement Cooper awakens in a hospital on Cooper Station,

one of mankind's current space stations. The doctor
adds that it is named after his daughter, Murphy,
who is said to have saved humanity and was
discovered floating in space. His daughter, now
extremely old and on her deathbed, comes to see
him. She advises him to leave since no parent
should have to see their child die. Cooper departs,

Rising Action The aliens send a message that is translated as "Use
weapon," which raises tension among the other
locations even more. The Chinese issue an
ultimatum to the aliens: evacuate within 24 hours or
the military will launch a strike. Several other sites
prepare to do the same thing, while the sites
themselves become disconnected. Weber is told by
Louise that they must ensure the aliens understand
the difference between a weapon and a tool.
Climax Dr. Louise Banks steals a satellite phone and
barricades herself in a room to try to save the world.
She contacts General Shang and recited to him his

5. Theme (What is the major theme of the story)

In many ways, Ready Player One is a parable about the dangerous effects of late-
stage capitalism, and how a few become very rich while the majority suffer in
poverty. Halliday himself seemed to exemplify the "American Dream" as a self-made
billionaire, but although he made a fortune off of the videogame he developed,
Halliday refused to charge a user's fee for OASIS. He attempted to ensure that the
OASIS be open to anyone who could afford the console and privacy necessary to
access it. The Contest itself can be understood as an allegory for labor in our
society, where the dwindling middle class stays complicit with the system because it
has been convinced that its struggles are only a temporary embarrassment. But
even though the contest could be accessed by anyone, it is only a select number of
people who end up truly competing for the egg, and it is only through being
supported by an evil corporation that so many Sixers are able to place on the
Scoreboard. Although Halliday primarily wished to protect open-source technology,
halting the capitalization of his product was a secondary priority to him.

ELEMENTS OF THE PLOT SUMMARY

Exposition
In the year 2045, climate change, war and poverty
have ruined most of Earth’s societies. Most people
find escape and relief in the OASIS, a multiplayer
online game with thousands of different locations,
including games, online shopping, and even a
thriving school system. Most people in the world
have OASIS accounts, as there are no recurring fees
and it offers an escape from the real world. The
creator of the OASIS, James Halliday, has left a
contest that will transfer the ownership of the OASIS
and its parent company to whoever finds his Easter
egg. Since the company is worth billions of dollars,

many users have been trying to figure out the clues

that lead to Halliday’s Easter egg for years.

Rising Action

In “Level One,” Wade Watts describes his

adventures trying to win Halliday’s contest. He is a
high school student who lives in trailer park in
Oklahoma City. Since he lives in poverty and has
poor social skills, he dedicates his life to being a
“gunter” (egg hunter). Since the contest was
announced, no one has made any meaningful
progress. Gunters are OASIS users who have not
given up on finding Halliday’s Easter egg. Wade’s
online avatar, Parzival, and Wade’s friend Aech
spend almost all of their time looking for clues.

Wade eventually figures out the location of the
Copper Key, the first step in finding Halliday’s egg.
Wade also meets a fellow gunter named Art3mis.
Even though she is his competition, he has a crush
on her. After acquiring the key, Wade soon passes
through the First Gate. Upon doing so, his avatar
becomes instantly famous across the OASIS.
Art3mis, Aech, and two other gunters (Daito and
Shoto) soon clear the First Gate as well. Wade is
contacted by the Sixers, members of the corporation
IOI, who regularly employ unfair tactics to win
Halliday’s contest. Wade speaks to the leader of the
Sixers, Nolan Sorrento. Sorrento threatens to kill
Wade in the real world. Wade does not cooperate
and the trailer where Wade’s family lives is
destroyed in a large explosion. Wade warns his
friends, creates a fake identity, and leaves
Oklahoma City.

Climax
In “Level Two,” Wade has difficulty figuring out how
to get the Jade Key, the next item in his quest. He
spends more time with Art3mis and eventually
professes his love for her. She breaks up with him.
His friends clear the Jade Key, as do the Sixers, and

eventually Aech gives him a hint. Wade acquires the
Jade Key, but the Sixers have already cleared the
Second Gate and have acquired the Crystal Key.
Shoto contacts him and tells him that the Sixers
broke into Daito’s real-world apartment and killed
him.
Wade eventually figures out the clues to clear the
Second Gate and then acquire the Crystal Key. He
also figures out the location of the Third Gate, but
the Sixers are ahead of him and have set up an
impenetrable barrier to its location. He gives his
friends explicit instructions on how to acquire the
same items and begins to formulate a dangerous
plan. In “Level Three,” Wade allows himself to be
captured by IOI and sent to their indentured work
program as a prisoner. Since he is using his false
identity, they do not know that he is Wade/Parzival.
Once inside IOI, he uses hacking resources to steal
evidence of their criminal activity and set up a chain
of events that will allow his group to reach the Third
Gate. Wade uses his computer skills and access to
escape the IOI work prison. He warns his friends
that the Sixers are planning to kidnap them to win
the contest. He also sends all the criminal activity
that he has uncovered to every news outlet. Wade
and his friends are contacted by Ogden Morrow,
James Halliday’s original business partner, who gives
them refuge from the Sixers. There is a giant battle
between all the clans of gunters and the Sixers
outside the third gate. The Sixers use every tactic
that they can to try to stop Wade. Fighting through
the Sixer soldiers, Wade enters the Third Gate.
Falling Action
He solves more of Halliday’s puzzles and reaches
Halliday’s Easter egg, just before the Sixers.

Denouement

He splits the winnings with his friends and meets

Art3mis for the first time in the real world. They
share a romantic moment, and Wade is no longer
concerned with the OASIS.
