Investigation 2: - (12 marks)

Part of a pond is in the shape of a parabola

which can be modelled by the function
−8 2 8
f ( x )= x + x.
90 3

The local authority decides to build a path

on either side of the pond. The two paths
will meet at the drinking fountain that is
already in place at a point with coordinates
(15, 29). It is decided that the most
economical way to achieve this is to build
paths that just touch the side of the pond at
5 m and 25 m from the edge, as shown in
the diagram. These paths would then be
tangents to the curve.

1. How can the local authority work out the equations for these paths?

2. How can they be certain that the paths will meet at the drinking fountain?

−8 2 8
3. Using technology, sketch the graph of f ( x )= x + x.
90 3

−8 2 8
4. Find the derivative of f ( x )= x + x.
90 3

5. What does this represent?

6. Find the gradient of the tangent to the curve when x=5 .

7. Find the value of f ( x) when x=5 .

8. Hence, find the equation of the tangent when x=3 .

9. Use technology to draw this line on your graph.

10 Repeat this process for x=25 .

11. Now that you have the equations of the two tangents, how can you find out where they
meet? Do they meet at the location of the drinking fountain?

12. What is the relation between the gradient of a tangent at a given point and the
derivative of a function at the same point?
Investigation 3: - (15 marks)

1. On the same set of axes, sketch the graphs of

y=x 2 , y=x 2+1 , y=x 2−2 , y=x 2 +3 over the interval −4< x <4 .

a. How can you describe their relative position?

b. Find the gradient of each of these curves at x=1. What do you notice?

c. Now find the gradient of each of these curves at x=−2.

What can you say about these answers?

d. What is the gradient of each of these curves at any x ?

e. Find another curve for which the gradient at x is the same as the gradient of any
of the curves from 1.

f. How would you write the formula of any curve with the gradient the same as the
gradient of the curves from 1?

g. All these curves make up a family of functions that are antiderivatives of 2 x.

Why is this?

The notation used to indicate this family of functions∫ 2 x dx=2 x +c ,

where c is a constant.

This is read as “the integral of 2 x with respect to x is x 2+ c .

h. What is the value of c when the antiderivative is y=x 2 +1?

What is the constant of integration when the antiderivative is y=x 2?

i. What is the derivative of x 2+ c with respect to x ?

2. What is the family of functions that are antiderivatives of f ( x)=3? What do their graphs
have in common? Write this family of functions using integral notation.

3. What does the integral ∫ f ( x ) dx represent? Calculate it.

4. How does an indefinite integral define a family of antiderivatives?
