Re: Officer Involved Shooting of Anthony Oliver

The Kalamazoo County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney has completed

its review of the November 27, 2021, officer involved shooting of Anthony
Oliver at the Kalamazoo Transportation Center.

The events of November 27, 2021 were incredibly tragic. They forever
changed the lives of those personally involved, their families and loved
ones, our law enforcement officers, and our community.

This incident also brings into focus the desperate need to improve the care
provided to persons suffering from mental health difficulties. People who
suffer from mental illness, their families, care providers, and the community
must do a better job to ensure people who are in need are getting the
treatment and services that will help them. Far too often, law enforcement
and the criminal justice system are being asked to respond to a crisis that
results from the lack of mental health services. A situation that might
otherwise have been avoided.

It is the opinion of the Prosecuting Attorney that Kalamazoo Department of

Public Safety Sgt. Amil Alwan, PSO Trevor Aday, and PSO Trevor
Patterson acted in lawful self-defense in their use of deadly force. The
actions of Mr. Oliver posed an immediate and extreme threat of death or
serious injury to the officers and other persons. Their belief that Mr. Oliver
posed an immediate threat was both honest and reasonable.
The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney would like to thank the Michigan
State Police for their thorough investigation of this matter.
