Reading and Explanation
Answer the following;
Ans1.Buck lived at Judge Miller’s place in Santa Clara Valley.It was a big
house with a wide veranda around it,It had spacious lawns in the front and
back with tall poplars.There were big stables,servant’s cottages,reen
pastures,orchards,and berry patches.There was also a pumping plant for the
well and a big cement tank for storing water.

Ans2.Buck swam in the tank and went hunting with the judge’s sons.He
escorted the judge’s daughters on their morning and evening walks.He
carried the judge’s grandsons on his back,played with them,and guarded
them in their little outdoor adventures.

Ans3.There were several other dogs at Judge’s Miller’s place,but they were of
little importance compared to Buck.The fox terriers lived in kernels and
barked fearfully at the house dogs,such as the Japanese pug and the Mexican
hairless,which lived indoors.The word that aptly describes Buck’s attitude
towards the other dogs is’disdain’.

Ans4.Manuel was one of the gardener’s helpers at Judge Miller’s place.He


kidnapped Buck for money.He loved to play Chinese lottery,which required
money.And his wages as a gardener’s help did not even cover the needs of
his wife and children.

Ans5.Buck did not struggle when Manuel put the rope around his neck
because he had learnt to trust the men he knew and give them credit for a
wisdom that was beyond his own.But he protested when the ends of the
rope were placed in a stranger’s hand.And when it tightened around his

when they met Harris?
Ans.The people who were lost in the maze had been wandering for a
while trying to find their way out.So,Harris claim that he knew the
way out came as a relief to them and they felt hopeful.
Q2.What made Harris feel that he had become unpopular?
Ans.When Harris drew out his map again after they failed to find a
way out even after several tries,he was asked to curl his hair with
it.This made him feel that he had become unpopular.
Q3. How did the people who got lost within the maze finally get
out?
Ans.The people who got lost within the maze got out after an old
keeper came back from his dinner and guided them out.
Q4.What does Harris think of the maze at the beginning and at the
end of the story?Why does he change his opinion about it?
Ans.At the beginning he feels that find your way within the maze was
too simple a task.At the end of the story,Harris had admitted that it
was a fine maze.This is because,despite his numerous and best
efforts,he and the group with him got lost within the maze and could
not get out until an old keeper had come to their rescue.
